Salzburg is 150 kilometres east of Munich Airport along the A8 motorway — a straight run that crosses into Austria near Freilassing and arrives at the city in around 1 hour 45 minutes. It is the most requested cross-border transfer from MUC, used by Sound of Music visitors, tourists, skiers connecting onward into the Salzkammergut, and business travellers between the two cities.
Your carrier handles the German-Austrian border crossing, which operates under Schengen rules — no routine passport control for EU travellers. The Austrian motorway vignette (currently €12.80 for 10 days) is included in most carrier quotes; confirm at booking.
The Chiemsee lake area is visible from the A8 near Rosenheim. A brief detour gives access to Herrenchiemsee Palace — Ludwig II's Versailles replica on an island in the lake — one of Bavaria's most photographed sites. Mention any stops when requesting your quote.
Salzburg draws visitors year-round. The Salzburg Festival (late July to late August) is the busiest single period — book transfers well in advance for July and August. Christmas Markets (late November to late December) and ski connections into Ski Amadé sustain demand through winter.

Your driver covers the distance — you enjoy the scenery.
One of Austria's most impressive medieval fortresses, sitting on a rocky crag above the Inn River. This is the gateway into Tirol — visible from the motorway as you cross the border.
Official site →From Kufstein to Innsbruck, the A12 follows the Inn River through a dramatic alpine gorge. The turquoise glacial meltwater of the Inn is visible from the motorway for much of this stretch.
Tirol tourism →A beautifully preserved medieval silver-mining town, often overlooked in favour of Innsbruck. Just 10km east of the city centre, it's a rewarding brief stop with an intact old town and coin mint museum.
Town info →The Gothic oriel balcony in Innsbruck's old town centre is one of the most photographed landmarks in the Alps. The surrounding Maria-Theresien-Strasse offers views of the mountains framing the city end-to-end.
Innsbruck tourism →Door-to-door service from any location in Munich including MUC Airport, hotels, train station, or private addresses.

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.
Depart before 08:00 or 10:30–14:00 for a smooth run. The A93 through Kiefersfelden and the A12 through the Inn Valley are generally free-flowing outside peak ski weekends. Avoid Friday afternoons in winter.
A93 Kiefersfelden border crossing is the main pinch point (same as Kitzbühel route). Beyond Kufstein, the A12 Inntal motorway flows well except near Innsbruck city approaches at rush hour (07:30–09:00, 17:00–19:00).
Austrian vignette required from Kiefersfelden. The A12 has a separate Inntal toll section — carriers handle this. No mountain passes on this route; winter road conditions are generally managed quickly by Austrian motorway services.
Innsbruck airport transfers can also use this route — if you're connecting to or from INN airport rather than MUC, the same carriers often cover both ends and may offer a combined rate.
