Tasch Connection — How Departures from Zermatt Work
Zermatt is car-free. Your transfer does not start in the village — it starts at Tasch Matterhorn Terminal, 6km down the valley. Take the MGB electric train from Zermatt station to Tasch (12 minutes, every 20 minutes). Your driver meets you at the station exit with a name board. Coordinate which MGB train you are taking when you book.
The MGB train ticket from Zermatt to Tasch (approximately CHF 8.60 per person one-way) is purchased separately at Zermatt station or at mgbahn.ch. It is not included in the transfer price.
About This Transfer
The Matterhorn watches you leave. As your driver pulls out of Tasch and heads north down the Matter Valley, the pyramid holds its position in the rear window for the first half hour - until the road bends west at Visp and the mountain disappears behind a shoulder of rock. That moment is the actual end of a Zermatt trip - not the airport, not the gate, but the valley closing behind you from the back seat.
Because Zermatt is car-free, every transfer to Geneva Airport starts at Tasch, 6km down the valley. You take the MGB (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn) electric train from Zermatt station to Tasch Matterhorn Terminal: 12 minutes, departing every 20 minutes, CHF 8.60 per person, paid at the station and not included in the transfer fare. Tasch is a large covered terminal with parking, ski lockers, and a clear taxi and transfer pickup zone right at the station exit. Your driver waits there with a name board, helps with luggage and ski bags, and you're rolling within a few minutes of stepping off the train.
The first 35km out of Tasch follow the B9 down the Matter Valley - a narrow valley road with the river on one side and rock walls on the other, single carriageway, slow and dramatic. At Visp the valley opens into the wide Rhone basin and you join the A9 motorway. From there it's fast going through Sierre, Sion (with its twin hilltop castles visible from the road), Martigny at the great Roman elbow of the valley, and then up onto the lake shore above Montreux. The final hour runs along Lake Geneva past Vevey, Lausanne, Morges and Nyon before peeling off into GVA.
Plan the full door-to-door as roughly 3 hours from Zermatt station to the GVA check-in desk: 12 minutes on the MGB, a few minutes of transition at Tasch, then 2h 45min on the road. For an early flight, that means working backwards from your check-in time, adding international airport buffer, and booking the MGB at least 20 minutes earlier than feels comfortable. Most travellers leave Zermatt around 4 hours before flight time for a morning departure from GVA.

Sights Along the Route
Your driver covers the distance — you enjoy the scenery.
The Matterhorn from the Matter Valley
For the first half hour of the drive, the Matterhorn (4,478m) sits framed in the rear window above the valley. The pyramid stays visible until the road turns west at Visp. This is the last view of the mountain on a departing trip - worth a glance at the first lay-by north of Tasch.
Zermatt tourism →Sion - Twin Castles of the Rhone
Halfway along the A9 through the Rhone valley, the town of Sion appears with two medieval castles on neighbouring rock outcrops - Tourbillon and Valere. Valere is an 11th-century fortified church housing the world's oldest playable organ, built around 1435. Both are clearly visible from the motorway on the right.
Valais tourism →Martigny - Roman Crossroads
Martigny sits at the great elbow where the Rhone turns north toward Lake Geneva. Founded by the Romans as Forum Claudii Vallensium, it still has a visible amphitheatre. The Fondation Pierre Gianadda art museum here regularly hosts Picasso, Monet and Rodin retrospectives - among Switzerland's best.
Fondation Gianadda →Chateau de Chillon - Montreux
As the A9 reaches Montreux, the Chateau de Chillon appears on a rocky islet at the lake's edge, right beside the motorway. The 13th-century water castle inspired Lord Byron's "The Prisoner of Chillon." From here the road follows Lake Geneva for 60km to GVA - one of Europe's great airport approaches.

Best Travel Times
For a morning flight out of GVA, leave Zermatt around 4 hours before departure - a 10:00 flight means an MGB around 06:00 and Tasch pickup by 06:20. For very early flights before 08:00, most travellers stay near the airport the night before rather than starting at 03:00. Afternoon and evening flights are easier: leave Zermatt by 11:00 for a 16:00 flight and you'll have margin.
Traffic Patterns
The A9 into GVA gets heavy on weekday mornings between 07:30 and 09:30 with Lausanne and Geneva commuter traffic - add 20-30 minutes if arriving in that window. Saturday morning in ski season is changeover at Tasch, when half of Zermatt is departing at once - book the MGB and pickup early. Summer brings occasional Rhone valley roadworks between Sion and Martigny.
Road & Border Notes
The entire route is inside Switzerland - no border crossing, no passport check. Swiss motorway vignette (CHF 40/year) required on A9, included in most carrier offers. The Matter Valley road (B9) from Tasch to Visp is narrow and single-carriageway - the first 35km are slower than motorway figures suggest. A9 from Visp onward is full motorway standard.
Carrier Tip
Send your carrier the exact MGB train you plan to take from Zermatt to Tasch - not just a pickup time. Trains run every 20 minutes and the carrier times arrival to your specific train. The pickup zone is the covered area immediately outside the train platform. Look for taxi and transfer signs rather than walking out to the main car park.

When to Travel This Route
Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.
Winter (Dec-Apr)
Peak SeasonSki season departure traffic peaks on Saturdays throughout January and February - the entire resort empties and refills on the same morning. Book the MGB and the transfer well in advance for Saturdays, and leave extra margin for early flights. Most departing skiers carry heavy luggage plus ski bags, so confirm equipment numbers with the carrier in advance.
- New Year departures (first week of January)
- February half-term changeovers (French and UK school holidays)
- End of ski season (mid to late April depending on snow year)
Spring (May-Jun)
ModerateThe valley is quiet between the lift closures and the start of the summer hiking season. Road conditions are good, the A9 is uncongested, and the views down the Rhone valley are at their greenest. A good window for relaxed travel and easier last-minute booking.
- Zermatt Unplugged music festival (early April, departures continue into May)
- Glacier ski end-of-season (date varies by snow)
- High-altitude hiking trail openings (mid-June)
Summer (Jul-Sep)
High DemandHiking, climbing and glacier skiing draw heavy traffic. The UTMB ultra-trail race in late August causes a spike as runners and crews move across the western Alps. End-of-week departures are busiest. The Matter Valley is at its most dramatic in clear summer weather.
- Zermatt Marathon (early July)
- Matterhorn first ascent anniversary events (mid-July)
- UTMB race week departures (late August into early September)
Autumn (Oct-Nov)
ModerateGlacier skiing continues year-round but resort traffic is light. The larch trees turn gold along the lower Matter Valley in mid-October. November is the quietest month of the year on this route, before ski season arrivals resume.
- Larch colour season in the Matter Valley (mid-October)
- National team glacier training camps (October-November)
- Pre-season resort opening (late November)
