About This Transfer
Three countries before lunch. This route lifts you out of Piedmont, drops you through the Aosta Valley, punches under Mont Blanc and delivers you to Lake Geneva in about three hours - no border queues to navigate yourself, no toll booths to fumble euros at, no white-knuckle Alpine driving in your future.
From Turin you join the A5 north, climbing steadily as the Po plain gives way to the Aosta Valley. This is castle country - over 100 medieval fortresses guard the corridor, with Fénis and the cliff-top Forte di Bard the most arresting. Past Aosta city (whose Roman gates and theatre are among the best-preserved outside Rome itself), the road narrows toward Courmayeur and the 11.6km Mont Blanc Tunnel. You enter in Italy, emerge in France at Chamonix, then trace the A40 autoroute blanche along the Arve valley before crossing into Switzerland at Geneva.
Geneva is where the trip ends but rarely the reason it starts. The city runs on banking, diplomacy and the UN - which means most travellers on this corridor are either business arrivals heading to meetings around the lake, ski connectors aiming at Verbier, Chamonix or Megeve, or leisure travellers continuing to the Lavaux vineyards or Lausanne. Drop-off works for the lakefront hotels, Cornavin station, Plainpalais or direct to GVA if you're connecting onward.
Two border crossings sit on this route: Italy to France inside the Mont Blanc Tunnel, and France to Switzerland on the Geneva approach. Both are Schengen-adjacent and usually waved through, though Swiss customs occasionally spot-check. Tolls run roughly €50 total - around €12 on the Italian A5, €30 for the Mont Blanc Tunnel one-way, and €8 on the French A40 - and most carriers fold these into the quoted price. If Chamonix weekend traffic is forecast heavy (peak ski Saturdays, August), carriers may route via the Grand Saint-Bernard Tunnel through Martigny instead. It adds about 30km but avoids the Mont Blanc bottleneck entirely.
✓ Three-Country Crossing (Italy, France, Switzerland)
✓ Mont Blanc Tunnel - Most Carriers Include All Tolls
✓ Grand Saint-Bernard Alternative Available if Tunnel Queues
Sights Along the Route
Your driver covers the distance — you enjoy the scenery.
Castello di Fénis
Among the most photographed of the Aosta Valley's 100+ medieval castles, Fénis is the textbook fairy-tale fortress - double curtain walls, pentagonal towers, and a courtyard staircase frescoed in the 1400s. It sits just off the A5 near Nus and is visible from the motorway. Worth a stop if you've built in time.
Aosta Valley castles →Forte di Bard
A vast Napoleonic-era fortress wedged onto a rocky outcrop above the Dora Baltea river, Forte di Bard guards the valley's narrowest point. Featured in Avengers: Age of Ultron and now home to the Alpine Museum. The fort is accessible by panoramic lifts up the cliff face.
Forte di Bard →Roman Aosta
Aosta city was founded by Augustus in 25 BC and its grid, walls, theatre and triumphal Arch of Augustus are remarkably intact - some of the finest Roman monuments outside Rome itself. The Porta Praetoria still frames the entrance to the old town. A worthwhile coffee stop on longer transfers.
Roman Aosta →Mont Blanc Tunnel
At 11.6km, the Mont Blanc Tunnel is one of Europe's longest road tunnels - bored straight through the Alps' highest peak at 1,274m altitude. The crossing takes around 10 minutes. The toll (~€30 one-way for a car) is included in most carrier offers on TransferBnB.

Best Travel Times
Early morning departures from Turin (before 8am) clear the city's ring road and arrive in Geneva before lunch. Avoid Saturday morning departures in ski season (Dec-Mar) and summer Saturdays in July-August - Mont Blanc Tunnel queues build from around 9am. Sunday afternoons westbound are quieter than the reverse direction. Mid-week year-round is the easiest run.
Traffic Patterns
Three named pinch points: Turin's tangenziale ring road at peak hours, the A5 approach to Courmayeur on ski-season Saturdays, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel itself. Tunnel queues can exceed 60 minutes on peak Saturdays in winter and summer. Geneva's approach via the A40 backs up during weekday rush hour (5-7pm).
Road & Border Notes
Italian A5 toll ~€12, Mont Blanc Tunnel ~€30, French A40 ~€8 - total around €50, most carriers include this. The Grand Saint-Bernard Tunnel via Martigny is the alternative when Mont Blanc queues spike - 30km longer, ~€33 for the tunnel, requires Swiss motorway vignette (carriers handle this). Both border crossings are usually quick.
Carrier Tip
Drivers who run this corridor weekly check the Mont Blanc Tunnel webcam and ATMB alerts before leaving Turin. If wait times exceed 30 minutes, experienced carriers swap to Grand Saint-Bernard before they're committed to the Aosta Valley floor - the decision point is around Aosta city. For ski-season Saturday pickups, expect a suggested 6-7am departure rather than the usual 8-9am.

When to Travel This Route
Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.
Winter (Dec-Mar)
Peak SeasonPeak season on this corridor. Ski traffic floods through both Courmayeur and Chamonix, and Geneva Airport becomes the main switching point for the western Alps. Book at least 7-10 days ahead for weekend transfers, longer over Christmas and February half-term. Snow chains are standard on all carriers - winter equipment is not an extra.
- Christmas and New Year week (late Dec-early Jan)
- February half-term ski peak (mid-Feb to early Mar)
- Coppa del Mondo ski events, Courmayeur (Jan-Feb)
Spring (Apr-May)
ModerateQuieter shoulder season once the lifts close. Mont Blanc Tunnel traffic drops sharply and journey times tighten to a reliable three hours. A good window for business travel and lake-region leisure trips before summer crowds.
- Geneva International Motor Show (typically March in show years)
- Salone del Libro book fair, Turin (mid-May)
- Aosta Valley castle reopenings (April)
Summer (Jun-Sep)
High DemandSummer traffic returns strongly - hiking, climbing and cycling crowds head for Chamonix, Courmayeur and the Mont Blanc massif. Tunnel queues build on July and August Saturdays. Geneva hosts conferences and lake-season leisure travellers. Book 5-7 days ahead for weekends.
- Geneva Fetes de Geneve (early August)
- UTMB ultra-trail race week, Chamonix (late August - major demand spike)
- Montreux Jazz Festival (early July - drives Geneva area traffic)
Autumn (Oct-Nov)
Low SeasonThe quietest stretch. Tunnel traffic is light, Aosta Valley castles are open for autumn visits, and Geneva runs on its diplomatic and conference calendar. The best window for scenic stops at Fénis or Aosta city without rush.
- Artissima contemporary art fair, Turin
- Geneva conference season
- Aosta Valley wine harvest
