Munich West, the Allgäu, the night, and an old air base

Your driver loads the bags on P1, straight across from the terminal, and joins the A96 at the Memmingen Ost exit. From there the motorway runs east to Munich and west to Lindau, and the A7 crosses it for Ulm and Kempten. Memmingen Airport, IATA code FMM, handled a record 3.7 million passengers in 2025, expects about 3.8 million in 2026, and ranks tenth among German commercial airports. Munich West, honestly

Memmingen is not in Munich.

The airport coach's own timetable still prints "Munich-West" in its timetable headers, as airline marketing long did. By road, the airport is 116 km from Marienplatz, about 1h 25 of motorway in free flow, which is three times as far as Munich Airport at 38.7 km from the same square. Figures that circulate widely put it at about 110 km and a little over an hour; measured from the airport's own reference point, it is neither.

The flight saving has to survive the ground leg.

The terminal closes at night, and you may not stay in it.

It is open 03:00 to 23:00, following the flight schedule until an hour after the last arrival. In the week of 21 to 27 September 2026 the last airport coach to Seidlstraße in Munich left at 22:45 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 22:30 on Wednesday and Saturday and 21:45 on Sunday. A new timetable comes out every week, a second coach to Munich starts on 1 October 2026, and the Seidlstraße coach's conditions of carriage say that catching a specific flight cannot be guaranteed. The last 810A City Shuttle to Memmingen station leaves at 23:10.

One traveller wrote in about 2023 that the last coach left on schedule while the flight was 30 minutes late, and that the airport then shut its gates. That is one account, not the operator's policy. It is also the evening a booked car exists for.

Land at 14:00 on a Tuesday with one suitcase and the 14:30 coach has you at Seidlstraße by 15:50.

Land at 22:15 on a Sunday and the last coach to Seidlstraße left at 21:45.

An air base with a low-cost timetable

The terminal was a hangar.

Memmingerberg was built as a military airfield in the mid 1930s, and from 1959 to 2003 it was home to the Luftwaffe fighter-bomber wing JaboG 34 "Allgäu", flying Tornados from 1987. The air base closed on 31 March 2004, the civil licence followed that July, and scheduled flights began in 2007 from the Picasso-Halle, a converted maintenance hangar, on a runway of 2,981 m. More than ten million euros is going into the terminal and apron in 2026, and the new arrivals exit passage is already open.

Two networks share the one runway. Tirana and Palma de Mallorca were among the most popular routes in 2025, and Pristina, Belgrade, Sofia, London Stansted, Skopje, Banja Luka and Bucharest each carried more than 100,000 passengers; the airport says its eastern routes are flown by commuters and people visiting family. It lists Ryanair, Wizz Air, Eurowings, Aegean Airlines, Freebird and Avanti Air, SunExpress flies to Antalya, and in winter the airport counts on skiers from across Europe.
