Zurich Airport Transfers

Zurich Airport (German: Flughafen Zürich, IATA ZRH) is Switzerland's largest airport. It sits in Kloten, 12km northeast of the Zurich city centre, and handled around 31.5 million passengers in 2023. For most travellers it is the front door to Zurich, the wider Swiss plateau, and the Alps beyond.

One terminal building. Three docks. You clear customs once. Dock B handles mostly Schengen flights, Dock E mixes Schengen and some non-Schengen traffic, and Dock Midfield takes the non-Schengen long-haul and SWISS hub connections. Passengers exit into one of two side-by-side arrivals halls: Arrivals 1 near Dock B and E exits, Arrivals 2 on the east side facing the taxi ranks and transfer vehicles. Land at Dock Midfield and the underground Skymetro takes you to the main terminal in a few minutes - same arrivals area, just a short ride first.

ZRH is a genuine Alpine gateway, and not only for Switzerland. The St. Anton am Arlberg ski area in Austria is roughly a two-hour-and-fifteen-minute drive, around 200km, which puts the Arlberg resorts well within reach of a single airport run. That drive crosses from Switzerland into Austria and uses motorway sections in both countries, so the carriers serving it hold the right cross-border operating licences and motorway vignettes for the full route. If your resort sits deeper in the Tyrol - Ischgl, Sölden, Obergurgl or Innsbruck itself - Innsbruck Airport is the closer gateway, roughly an hour to ninety minutes from most of them. Lucerne and the central Swiss lakes sit even closer.

Zurich is also the home base of SWISS, the Swiss International Air Lines flag carrier and a member of the Lufthansa Group, alongside Edelweiss Air, Condor, and the major European network carriers. That hub role is why so many long-haul arrivals route through Dock Midfield, and why a clear plan for finding your driver after a connecting flight is worth having before you land.
