St Moritz has a railway station, but the journey from Zurich Airport is two changes and 3h 23min to 3h 40min by day on the December 2026 timetable. Evenings are worse: on a weekday the last connection arriving the same night leaves the airport at 20:15, takes 3h 43min with four changes and gets in at 23:58, and the one after it leaves at 00:04 and arrives at 06:43. A private car leaves when your bags do, at any hour.
Give the carrier the address, not just the resort. St. Moritz Dorf sits above the lake and St. Moritz Bad below it, and Celerina, Pontresina, Silvaplana, Sils and Samedan are separate villages again.
About This Transfer
You walk out of arrivals at Zurich Airport, the ski bags go into the back once, and the next stop is your hotel in St Moritz. The car takes the Zurich bypass onto the A3, runs along the Walensee, joins the A13 at Sargans and follows it past Chur and Reichenau. It leaves the motorway at exit 22, Thusis Süd, where the sign already reads St. Moritz, and then the mountain part of the drive begins: the Schyn gorge road to Tiefencastel, the Julierstrasse climbing to 2,284 m at the pass, and the long descent past Silvaplana to the lake.
Engadin Tourismus puts the drive at three hours and St. Moritz Tourismus says around three hours, which is the figure to plan on. The distance is about 215 km from the airport. Engadin Tourismus gives 200 km from Zurich, the figure most often repeated; the same routing query run from Zurich main station gives 204.1 km, so starting at the airport adds about 10 km.
There is no border on this route. It stays in Switzerland from the airport to the Engadin, so there is no customs stop and no passport check. The Swiss motorway vignette, CHF 40 a year, covers the A3 and the A13, and the Julier Pass itself is free. TCS lists the Julier as open all year round, with weather restrictions and a chain requirement possible.
The train is a real option here, and a beautiful one: the Rhaetian Railway runs direct from Chur to St Moritz over the Albula line, UNESCO World Heritage since 2008, and the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express both serve the village. Chur old town
Chur calls itself Switzerland's oldest city, and it is where rail passengers taking the Chur route change onto the Albula line, which has been UNESCO World Heritage since 2008. For a transfer passenger it is the last city before the road turns into the mountains. On a summer arrival with an afternoon to spare, an hour in the old town is an easy stop to build into the booking, because waiting time is priced, not assumed.

The Julier is the highest point of the journey at 2,284 m. Graubünden Ferien calls it the most important road connection to the Engadine, usable all year round, and TCS lists it as open all year with weather restrictions and a possible chain requirement. TCS measures the pass road at about 42 km of asphalt between Savognin and Silvaplana, and from the car it is wide-radius curves above the treeline.

The road comes off the Julier straight onto the shore of Lake Silvaplana, which Engadin Tourismus describes as crystal-clear and turquoise, ringed by mountains and forest. The constant Maloja wind makes it a kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing lake in summer, and in winter the frozen surface becomes a vast natural ice field. It is the first thing most arrivals see of the Engadin.

St Moritz puts its events on the lake itself. The Snow Polo World Cup runs from 22 to 24 January 2027 on the frozen lake, and White Turf, which Engadin Tourismus lists from 6 to 21 February 2027 with admission from CHF 29, brings horse racing and skijoring onto the ice for its 120th anniversary. Book the car early for either.

Road & Border Notes
No border at all: the route never leaves Switzerland. The Swiss motorway vignette is CHF 40 and applies on the A3 and A13; the 2027 vignette is valid from 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2028. Driving without one costs a CHF 200 fine plus the vignette. The Julier Pass carries no toll. The one paid alternative is the Vereina car train, which loads at Klosters Selfranga and carries the car through a 19 km tunnel to Sagliains in 18 minutes for CHF 41 on site in winter, and which avoids the pass drive entirely. Switzerland has no legal winter tyre obligation, but a badly equipped driver can be held liable after an accident, and chains become compulsory where a sign says so.

Say Dorf or Bad, and give the street. The two halves of St Moritz are a steep few minutes apart, and Celerina, Pontresina, Silvaplana, Sils and Samedan are villages of their own, so the resort name alone is not an address. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, because they decide the vehicle. And if you land in the evening, say so: on a weekday, after the 20:15 departure there is no rail connection that reaches St Moritz the same night.
