After the last train, only a car gets you to Verbier tonight
A private car leaves Zurich Airport when your bags arrive, whatever the hour, and stops at the chalet. The train does not. On the 2026/27 timetable the last useful train leaves the airport at 20:09 on weekdays (between about 19:50 and 20:15 at winter weekends) and reaches Le Châble at 23:50 to 23:53, with minutes to spare before the gondola stops running at 23:55. Miss it and the next train that gets you there arrives the following morning.

About This Transfer
You come through customs at Zurich Airport, the skis go into the back of the car once, and the next door that opens is your chalet's in Verbier. The whole drive stays in Switzerland. The car takes the A1 west past Bern, the A12 through Fribourg and down to Lake Geneva at Vevey, the A9 along the lake and up the Rhône valley to exit 21 Martigny-Fully, and then the road through Sembrancher and Le Châble up to the village.
Verbier Tourisme allows around 3h 15min from Zurich Airport. The road is about 280 km. Some published figures put it at 160 km and 2h 30min, which is the Geneva Airport distance, or at 200 km, which is about 80 km short. The last 30 minutes are the climb from Martigny, where Verbier Tourisme warns chains may be required in heavy snowfall.
The train is possible and slow. Verbier Tourisme puts it at around 4h 20min from Zurich to Le Châble, then 20 minutes up by gondola or bus. From the airport it takes two to four changes, usually via Visp or via Lausanne and Martigny. After the long run across the plateau, the A12 drops to Lake Geneva at Vevey, and the view opens over the Lavaux terraces, Switzerland's largest contiguous vineyard area and a UNESCO-listed landscape on the lake east of Lausanne. It is the moment the drive stops being a commute. On a summer transfer the terrace villages are a short detour off the motorway.

From a winter car it is something to look down at. On a summer transfer with time in hand it is the stop worth adding, if you ask your carrier first, because waiting time is priced rather than assumed.

Martigny is where the motorway ends and the mountain begins. The Gianadda foundation puts a Gallo-Roman museum, a car museum, a sculpture park and a programme of exhibitions and concerts in one place, which makes it the natural break on a long arrival day, and a sensible stop on the way out before an evening flight from Zurich.

This is why the drive is worth it. The Verbier-Tzoumaz sector runs 5 December 2026 to 25 April 2027, and the whole 4 Vallées area 12 December 2026 to 18 April 2027. An adult six-day pass is CHF 374.00 for Verbier-Tzoumaz or CHF 409.00 for the 4 Vallées. The transfer is rarely the biggest line on the bill.

Verbier is not car-free: the road climbs from Le Châble to the village and a car drives to the door. What the village has is a parking problem: there is no car park with direct access to the slopes. Best Travel Times
Land by mid-afternoon and the drive is done before a late dinner. Land in the evening and the transfer is the only way in that night, because in winter the last useful train leaves the airport around 20:00 (20:09 on weekdays on the 2026/27 timetable). Winter Saturdays are changeover days in Verbier, and the busy stretch is the A9 up the Rhône valley, which this route shares with every Geneva car. If you land on a Saturday, tell the carrier when you book.
Traffic Patterns
The route has three parts. The A1 from Zurich past Bern, the A12 across the plateau through Fribourg, and from Vevey the A9, where the car joins the Geneva traffic; from the Martigny exit the lift company allows 30 minutes to Verbier. Road & Border Notes
No border. The route stays in Switzerland from the airport to the chalet. Switzerland has no blanket winter tyre law: Verbier Tourisme strongly recommends winter tyres and warns that chains may be required between Le Châble and Verbier in heavy snowfall. The Swiss motorway vignette is CHF 40 and covers every motorway kilometre of this drive; on a transfer the carrier normally pays it. The Lötschberg car train, which shortens the Zurich to Zermatt drive, is no help here: by the road network it is slower than the lake route even before the crossing itself and any wait at the loading ramp.

Give the address, not just the resort name, because Verbier spreads across the hillside and there is no car park at the slopes. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, since on a 280 km run nobody wants to discover at the kerb that the saloon is too small. For a group, ask for a comfort stop at Martigny in the booking notes rather than on the motorway.
