Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, IATA: VIE) sits in Schwechat, Lower Austria, 18km southeast of the city centre. It is Austria's largest airport and handled around 31.7 million passengers in 2023, according to Vienna Airport AG. As the home base of Austrian Airlines and a long-standing connecting point between Western Europe and the east, it functions as one of Central Europe's main gateways, feeding traffic toward Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and the wider Danube region.

The passenger areas are split across Terminal 1, Terminal 1A, and Terminal 3. Terminal 3 is the principal hub, home to Austrian Airlines and handling both Schengen and non-Schengen departures and arrivals; the original Terminal 2 was demolished and folded into the Terminal 3 expansion. Terminal 1 and Terminal 1A are linked and primarily serve point-to-point carriers and some charter flights, which means the terminal you land at says a fair amount about the kind of flight you took.

For most arrivals the road into Vienna is short and straightforward, running along the A4 Ostautobahn. That changes from September 2026: the S7 S-Bahn line closes for construction between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof from 7 September 2026 until October 2027, removing one of the cheaper rail options into the city for more than a year. With the S-Bahn out of service on that stretch, a door-to-door private transfer becomes a more practical choice for travellers who would otherwise have used it, particularly those arriving with luggage or outside daytime hours.
