St Moritz has a station, but it is a long way from the airport by rail. On a weekday in December 2026 the first connection leaves at 04:45 and reaches Zurich Airport at 08:11 after two changes, at Landquart and Zürich HB, and the next leaves at 05:02 and arrives at 08:41 after three. At weekends the first arrival is 08:44, after four. A private car leaves at the hour your flight needs, from your own door.

About This Transfer
The car is at your door in St Moritz at the hour you chose, the skis go in once, and the next stop is the departures kerb at Zurich Airport. It runs down past Lake Silvaplana, climbs the Julierstrasse to the pass at 2,284 m, drops through Tiefencastel and the Schyn gorge, and joins the A13 at exit 22, Thusis Süd. From there it is motorway all the way: past Chur, onto the A3 at Sargans, along the Walensee and round the Zurich bypass to the airport.
Both tourism boards put the drive between Zurich and the Engadin at three hours, and a routing query from St Moritz to the airport gives 2h 54min over about 215 km. Plan on three hours in normal traffic, and more when the Julier has fresh snow on it or on a Saturday, which is the Alpine changeover day.
No border, no customs and no toll booths. The Swiss motorway vignette, CHF 40 a year, covers the A13 and the A3, the Julier Pass itself is free, and on a private transfer the carrier normally pays the vignette.
The train out of the Engadin is a fine journey and a poor airport plan. The Rhaetian Railway runs direct from St Moritz to Chur in 1h 57min over the Albula line, UNESCO World Heritage since 2008, but the airport is at least two changes and 3h 23min to 3h 40min beyond your front door, and on a weekday the first arrival there is 08:11. Lake Silvaplana
The road out of St Moritz runs along Lake Silvaplana before it starts climbing. Engadin Tourismus calls it crystal-clear and turquoise, ringed by mountains and forest, and the constant Maloja wind makes it a kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing lake in summer. In winter the frozen surface becomes a vast natural ice field, which is what you see from the car on a February morning.

TCS lists it as open all year round, with weather restrictions and a chain requirement possible, and Graubünden Ferien calls it the most important road connection to the Engadine. Chur calls itself Switzerland's oldest city, and it is the first city on the way out, once the road has become motorway again. With an evening flight and a morning to spare after checkout, an hour in the old town is the easiest stop on the whole route. The hard part of this drive comes first, not last. The Julier Pass, the descent to Tiefencastel and the Schyn gorge are all in the opening hour, and that is where snow costs time. Once the car joins the A13 at Thusis Süd it is motorway to the airport, past Chur, onto the A3 at Sargans and along the Walensee. Saturday is the Alpine changeover day.
Road & Border Notes
No border at all: the route never leaves Switzerland. The Swiss motorway vignette is CHF 40 and applies on the A13 and A3; the 2027 vignette is valid from 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2028. Driving without one costs a CHF 200 fine plus the vignette. The Julier carries no toll. If the pass is not on for the day, the Rhaetian Railway's car train runs the other way too, loading at Sagliains for Klosters Selfranga in 18 minutes, with winter departures at 05:50, then every 30 minutes from 06:20 to 20:20, and late runs at 21:20, 22:20, 23:20 and 00:20. Switzerland has no legal winter tyre obligation, but a badly equipped driver can be held liable after an accident, and chains are compulsory where signposted.
Carrier Tip
Work back from the flight, not forward from breakfast. Give the carrier the real flight number and the real address, Dorf or Bad and the street, and have the bags and the skis at the door at the agreed time rather than still in the ski room. Declare the equipment when you book, because it decides the vehicle, and say if you are leaving before dawn: on this route that is the normal case, not the exception.
