Leave 4h 25min to 5h 25min before your flight

The drive from Lech to Zurich Airport is about 2h 25min in free-flowing traffic, and the airport recommends arriving two to three hours before departure. Together that puts the pickup 4h 25min to 5h 25min before the flight, and 5 minutes less from Zürs. Add more when snow is forecast on the Flexen Pass.

The Flexen road is normally the only road out in winter. If snow is forecast, ask your carrier the evening before whether the pickup should move earlier.

About This Transfer

The car is outside your hotel in Lech or Zürs at the time you agreed, the skis go in once, and you do not touch them again until the terminal at Zurich Airport. From Lech the road runs about 5 km to Zürs, over the Flexen Pass, through the gallery and down past Stuben to Langen am Arlberg: 14 km of mountain road, about 17 minutes when it is clear. Then it is expressway and motorway, the S16 down the Klostertal, the A14 to Hohenems, across the Rhine at Diepoldsau, and the Swiss motorway past St. Gallen and Winterthur to the airport.

From the centre of Lech the drive is about 194 km and 2h 25min in free-flowing traffic, and from Zürs about 189 km and 2h 20min. Zurich Airport recommends arriving two to three hours before departure, so the pickup falls 4h 25min to 5h 25min before the flight. Your airline's own check-in deadline decides where in that range you sit.

The scheduled airport coach is the other way down, and on most days it does not fit a flight. From Monday to Thursday one coach runs, leaving Lech at 07:15 and reaching the airport at 10:30, which suits no departure before about 12:30. It is timetabled at 3h 15min to 4h for the trip, against about 2h 25min by car.

The road charges are an Austrian vignette and the Swiss one, both normally held by the carrier. For the rest of the planning, from equipment to group size, see our ski transfers guide for 2026/27.

  • ✓ Pickup 4h 25min to 5h 25min before the flight, at any hour
  • ✓ Flexen Pass, S16 from Langen, the border at Hohenems, then the Swiss A1
  • ✓ From your door in Lech or Zürs to the terminal, skis loaded once

The Flexen road, over the pass

The return starts on the Flexen road. From Lech it runs through Zürs and up to the Flexen Pass, then enters the gallery cut into the mountainside and drops to Stuben. The first section of this road opened on 11 October 1897, three metres wide; widening began in 1936 and more galleries were added in the 1950s.

Stuben am Arlberg →
off the A14, at Feldkirch

Schattenburg, Feldkirch

Hugo I of Montfort, who founded Feldkirch, built the Schattenburg around 1200, and it is still the town's landmark, with a museum of 18 rooms. With an evening flight and a morning checkout, it is a lunch stop in Feldkirch, which the A14 passes. Ask for it when you request offers, so the carrier prices the waiting time.

Schattenburg Museum →
on the A1, about an hour before the airport

The Abbey of St Gall

The Swiss motorway passes St. Gallen about an hour short of the airport. Its abbey district is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and UNESCO calls the library one of the richest and oldest in the world. It is the stop for a late flight, not for a tight one.

Route Overview

Pickup: Lech, Zürs and Oberlech, Vorarlberg

A transfer collects from the hotel or chalet you name in Lech or Zürs. Oberlech is car-free from December to April and linked to Lech by cable car, so the pickup point and time for Oberlech guests are agreed with the carrier. Zürs is about 5 km and 6 minutes closer to the airport than Lech, which is why the pickup time depends on the village.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • Lech hotels, apartments and chalets
  • • Zürs hotels and chalets
  • • Oberlech guests, at a point agreed with the carrier
  • • Zug and the other parts of Lech, by address

Drop-off: Zurich Airport (ZRH)

The carrier drops at the terminal and times the run to your flight. Zurich Airport recommends arriving two to three hours before departure, and its check-in opens at 4:00 a.m. at the earliest. Give the flight number and the airline when you book, so the carrier works back from the right deadline.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • Drop at the terminal, timed to your check-in
  • • Flight number and airline in the booking notes
  • • Zurich city hotel drops on the same route
  • • Airport railway station for onward trains

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

Work back from the flight, not from breakfast. Two to three hours at the airport plus about 2h 25min on the road is 4h 25min to 5h 25min, so a morning flight means a pickup in the dark. A private transfer does that at any hour. The scheduled coach does not: from Monday to Thursday it runs once a day.

Traffic Patterns

The first 14 km down to Langen is the part that varies, about 17 minutes in clear conditions and slower behind a plough. After that about 173 km of the drive is expressway and motorway. No authority publishes a delay figure for the climb or the border, so agree the pickup time with the carrier and let them add the margin.

Road & Border Notes

The car crosses from Austria into Switzerland between Hohenems and Diepoldsau. Both countries are in the Schengen area, so there is no routine passport check, but Switzerland requires a valid travel document to enter and it is a customs border, so carry your passport. Two vignettes apply, the Austrian one and the Swiss one at CHF 40. The tunnel the car passes through below Stuben is the Langen tunnel, not the tolled Arlberg tunnel, so there is no tunnel toll. From 1 November to 15 April Austria requires winter tyres in wintry conditions.

Carrier Tip

On a snow day, ask the evening before. In winter the Flexen road is normally the only road out, the road to Warth being generally closed, and the avalanche commission shuts the Flexen when it has to: on Saturday 21 February 2026 it was closed from 17:00 until the next morning. A carrier who follows the road report can move the pickup earlier, ahead of a forecast closure.

Price & Vehicle Options

A private transfer from Lech Zürs to Zurich Airport starts from around €455 one way. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so a saloon for three works out at about €152 each and a minivan for eight at €80 each. Count the ski bags you are taking home, not the ones you arrived with.

Prices are per vehicle, one way and indicative, and the carrier confirms them before you pay. They move with the calendar: a Saturday in February costs more than a Tuesday in March. When to Travel This Route

Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.

Winter (Dec-Mar)

Peak Demand

The Ski Arlberg season is planned from 2 December 2026. The Flexen road is normally the only road out, and a morning flight means a pickup before dawn. Book the return when you book the arrival, and tell the carrier the airline as well as the flight time.

  • Ski Arlberg season from 2 December 2026
  • Warth road generally closed in winter
  • Winter tyres compulsory in wintry conditions
  • Scheduled coach from 30 November 2026

Spring (Apr-May)

Season Planned to 18 April

The season is planned to run until 18 April 2027, subject to conditions, and the scheduled coach stops on 11 April 2027, a week earlier. For the last week of skiing the car and the train are what is left. The winter tyre rule runs to 15 April.

  • Season planned until 18 April 2027
  • Coach timetable ends 11 April 2027
  • Winter tyre rule until 15 April

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Medium Demand

In summer the road to Warth is open as well, and the winter tyre rule does not apply. A stop in Feldkirch or St. Gallen on the way to an evening flight is easy to add.

  • Warth road open in summer
  • Feldkirch and St. Gallen as stops
  • No winter tyre rule after 15 April

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

Low Demand

The quiet weeks before the lifts open. The Austrian winter tyre rule starts on 1 November, and the scheduled coach does not start until 30 November 2026, so until then the car is the direct way to the airport.

  • Winter tyre rule from 1 November
  • Coach timetable starts 30 November 2026
  • Lowest transfer demand of the year

Important Information

When to leave for your flight

Zurich Airport recommends arriving two to three hours before departure. With about 2h 25min of driving from Lech, that is a pickup 4h 25min to 5h 25min before the flight, and 5 minutes less from Zürs. That is free-flowing traffic: snow on the Flexen Pass needs more, and your carrier sets the margin.

If the Flexen road is closed

In winter the Flexen Pass road is normally the only road out of Lech and Zürs, because the road to Warth is generally closed for avalanche risk. Lech Zürs Tourismus describes the Flexen road as generally open all year round, and the avalanche commission closes it when conditions require. There is normally no detour, so a transfer waits for the reopening or leaves ahead of the closure. On a forecast snow day, agree an earlier pickup.

Vignettes, and the toll you do not pay

The route needs an Austrian vignette for the S16 and the A14 and the Swiss motorway vignette, CHF 40. The Arlberg road tunnel has a separate toll, €13.00 a trip in 2026, but its tolled section lies between Langen and St. Anton, east of where a car from Lech joins the expressway, so it does not apply. On a private transfer the carrier normally holds both vignettes.

The border

The car crosses into Switzerland between Hohenems and Diepoldsau, on about 3 km of ordinary road between the two motorways. There is no routine passport check, but Switzerland requires a valid travel document to enter, and customs officers can stop a vehicle. Carry your passport, in the cabin and not in the luggage.

Oberlech pickups

Oberlech is car-free from December to April and linked to Lech by the Oberlech cable car. Tell the carrier you are staying in Oberlech and agree where and when the car meets you. For an early flight, check the cable car's running times with your hotel first.

Skis, boards and luggage

Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases. If you bought equipment during the week, say so before the day.

Child seats

Child and booster seats are available on request from carriers on this route. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time should I leave Lech for a flight from Zurich Airport?

Leave Lech 4h 25min to 5h 25min before your flight, and 5 minutes later from Zürs. That is about 2h 25min of driving in free-flowing traffic plus the two to three hours Zurich Airport recommends at the airport before departure. Add more when snow is forecast on the Flexen Pass, and let your carrier set the pickup time against your airline's check-in deadline.

How long does a transfer from Lech Zürs to Zurich Airport take?

About 2 hours 25 minutes from Lech and about 2h 20min from Zürs in free-flowing traffic, over about 194 km. The first 14 km, over the Flexen Pass and down to Langen am Arlberg, takes about 17 minutes when the road is clear. The rest is the S16, the A14, the border at Hohenems and the Swiss motorway past St. Gallen.

Is there a shuttle bus from Lech to Zurich Airport?

Yes, a scheduled coach runs in winter, from 30 November 2026 to 11 April 2027, at €65 per person one way. From Monday to Thursday there is one a day, leaving Lech at 07:15 and Zürs at 07:30 and reaching Zurich Airport at 10:30, which suits no flight before about 12:30. Saturdays add a 05:45 departure that arrives at 09:00. The coach is timetabled at 3h 15min to 4h. Online booking closes 24 hours before departure; later than that is by phone, on request. For an earlier flight, or a pickup at your door, a private transfer leaves when you need it to.

Can I take the train from Lech to Zurich Airport?

Not from Lech itself, because neither Lech nor Zürs has a railway station. Bus line 750 runs down to Langen am Arlberg station in about 20 minutes. Lech Zürs Tourismus gives the rail journey from Zurich Airport as approximately 3 hours, with trains every two hours. On those figures the trip is about 3h 20min before any wait at the station. A private transfer takes about 2h 25min from your hotel door.

Do you pay the Arlberg tunnel toll between Lech and Zurich?

No. The Arlberg road tunnel toll, €13.00 a trip in 2026, applies between the St. Anton and Langen junctions of the S16. A car from Lech or Zürs comes down the Flexen Pass road and joins the S16 at Langen, west of that section. The drive needs an Austrian vignette and the Swiss one, CHF 40 a year, and on a private transfer the carrier normally holds both.

What happens if the Flexen Pass is closed on the day I fly?

The car cannot leave until the road reopens, because in winter the Flexen Pass road is normally the only road out of Lech and Zürs. The avalanche commission decides closures: on 21 February 2026 the road was shut from 17:00 until the next morning. If heavy snow is forecast, ask your carrier the evening before about an earlier pickup. A carrier who follows the road report can leave ahead of a closure.

Do I need a passport to drive from Lech to Zurich Airport?

Carry your passport. Austria and Switzerland are both in the Schengen area, so there is no routine passport check at the crossing between Hohenems and Diepoldsau, but Switzerland requires a valid travel document to enter, a passport or for those who travel on one an identity card, and it is a customs border. You will need the document at the airport in any case.

What does a private transfer from Lech Zürs to Zurich Airport cost?

On TransferBnB, carrier offers start from around €455 for a saloon carrying 1 to 3 passengers, rising to around €510 for an estate, €640 for a minivan seating 5 to 8, and €870 for a minibus. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, so a minivan for eight is €80 each, and they are indicative until a carrier confirms the quote. The carrier normally holds both vignettes.

Is Zurich the closest airport to Lech Zürs?

No. By distance the nearest is St. Gallen-Altenrhein, which Ski Arlberg lists at 100 km from Lech Zürs, then Innsbruck at 120 km and Friedrichshafen at 130 km; Zurich is 190 to 200 km. Zurich's case is its network: the airport was connected directly to 213 cities in 2025. If your flight home leaves from Zurich, a private transfer covers the 194 km in about 2h 25min.

Why Book This Route?

  • • A pickup timed to your flight at any hour, where the weekday coach leaves Lech once, early in the morning
  • • About 2h 25min door to terminal, against 3h 15min to 4h on the coach timetable
  • • One vehicle from the hotel door, where the train starts 15 km away at Langen
  • • A driver who follows the Flexen road report, on a route that normally has one road out in winter
  • • Priced per vehicle, not per head: a minivan for eight is €80 each, with both vignettes normally the carrier's cost

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. — London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. — Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. — Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria
