About Venice Airport

Where the road ends, where the boats leave, which airport you have, and which one is nearest to where you are going

Your driver loads the bags outside arrivals and takes the SS 14 past Mestre, then the Ponte della Libertà road bridge into Piazzale Roma: about 15 km and 25 minutes in free flow. Venice Marco Polo Airport, IATA code VCE, sits at Tessera, on the mainland shore of the lagoon. Our Italy transfers page covers the rest of the country.

Where the road ends

A car cannot reach a hotel in the historic center.

Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto, the car-park island beside it, are the only places in the island city that cars and buses reach. From Piazzale Roma the last leg is on foot, by vaporetto from the stops on the Grand Canal, or by a water taxi you booked ahead. Santa Lucia station is a 10-minute walk over the Ponte della Costituzione, and the People Mover runs between Tronchetto, the cruise terminal and Piazzale Roma.

With two suitcases and a child, that last leg is the one to plan.

Mestre, Treviso, Padua, Jesolo and every mainland hotel are different: the car goes to the door.

The boat from the airport's own dock

The airport has a water terminal of its own.

A covered, raised walkway 365 m long, with moving walkways, leads from the terminal to 12 piers: 9 for water taxis, 2 for scheduled boats and 1 for passengers with reduced mobility. The ministry that opened it in 2016 gives 10 minutes for the walkway. The Alilaguna water bus sails from there: its Blue line by Murano, Lido and San Marco to the railway station, its Orange line down the Grand Canal by Rialto, and a Red line in summer. Water taxis are private motorboats, and the airport sends you to the operators for the price.

For a hotel on a canal, the boat is the direct way in. For Mestre, Piazzale Roma, the cruise terminals or anywhere on the mainland, the car leaves from outside arrivals with no walkway, no ticket office and one vehicle for the whole party.

Which airport is on your ticket

Treviso Airport, code TSF, is a different airport.

Some airlines sell it as Venice-Treviso, and the company that runs Marco Polo runs it too. By road it is about 30 km and 45 minutes from Piazzale Roma, twice the distance from Marco Polo, and about 25 km from Marco Polo itself. Mestre is on the mainland, about 12 km and 20 minutes from the terminal. Lido is an island: the water bus Blue line stops there.

The access fee is over for 2026

Since 27 July 2026 there is no fee to pay.

The City of Venice ended its 2026 trial of the contributo di accesso on 26 July, and no payment or exemption request is needed now. Whether it returns in later years is the City's decision. When it applied, it cost €5 a day booked ahead or €10 a day booked late, and only in the historic city: Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, the Marittima cruise terminal and Santa Lucia station were never charged, and guests in paid accommodation in the comune were exempt on request.

Read the table by where you are going, then by where you can land. Marco Polo wins Venice by about 20 minutes over Treviso, Verona wins its own city and the lake by more than an hour, and Cortina is a draw between the two Venice airports, Treviso 8 km shorter on the same 1h 55. Flying into Munich instead? Our Munich Airport to Venice page covers that drive.

Fly here for Venice. For Garda, fly to Verona if you can.

North to Cortina

The A 57 and the A 27, then one valley road.

Treviso is on the way, about 29 km and 30 minutes from the terminal. The car takes the A 27 north and then the SS 51 di Alemagna up to Cortina d'Ampezzo: about 146 km and 1h 55 in free flow. ANAS's winter rule, last issued for the 2025-26 season, requires winter tires or snow chains on board on the SS 51 from 15 November to 15 April. With a transfer, the vehicle and its equipment are the carrier's to supply, and the skis ride in the same car.

West to Padua, Verona and Lake Garda

The A 4 does all three.

From the airport the A 57 ring road joins the A 4 westbound: about 47 km and 45 minutes to Padua, 127 km and 1h 30 to Verona, 146 km and 1h 40 to Peschiera del Garda at the south end of the lake, and 158 km and 1h 50 to Garda on the east shore. If your flight lands at Venice, that is one run with no change of train or bus.

East to the coast and Trieste

Jesolo is the nearest beach.

Lido di Jesolo is about 31 km and 40 minutes from the terminal, and Trieste about 149 km and 1h 50 east on the A 4.

Cruise passengers

Large ships no longer sail past San Marco.

Since 1 August 2021, ships over 25,000 GT or over 180 m may not pass through St Mark's basin, St Mark's canal or the Giudecca canal. The Marittima and San Basilio terminals in the city take only ships inside that limit. Larger ships berth at Fusina, for ships up to 250 m, at Chioggia, for ships up to 228 m with the Maritime Authority's approval, both with their own terminal, or at the Liguria and Lombardia quays in Marghera, for ships up to 300 m, whose passengers embark and disembark at the Marittima. From the airport the Marittima is about 16 km and 25 minutes, Fusina about 27 km and 35 minutes; check the berth on your cruise documents. Our Mediterranean cruise port transfers guide compares Venice with the other big ports.

How Much Does a Venice Airport Transfer Cost?

Carriers quote per vehicle, for your flight, your party and your luggage.

It depends on four things, and every carrier on TransferBnB prices them into one quote per vehicle before you fly:

  • The vehicle. A sedan for two, an MPV or a minivan for a family or a group, so nobody is split across two cars.
  • The party and the bags. Ski bags for Cortina and luggage for a cruise need a longer boot, so put them in the request.
  • The distance. From the 12 km run to Mestre to the 158 km drive to Garda; the route cards above carry each drive.
  • The date. Carriers quote for the day you travel, so give the flight date and number in the request.

The airport publishes fixed taxi fares for the short runs: €40 to Piazzale Roma, €35 to Mestre center and €45 to the cruise ship terminal. It publishes no water-taxi fare and sends you to the operators.

Beyond Mestre and Venice there is no official fare to compare against, so every run on this page is quoted by the carriers on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does my transfer driver meet me at Venice Airport?
In the arrivals hall, with a name board, or at the car in the short-stay car park; your carrier confirms which in the booking chat. The airport is a controlled traffic zone: a car may stay on the airport road for 10 minutes, plus 2 minutes' grace, before the police can fine it. The short-stay car park is 1 minute on foot from the terminal and its first 20 minutes are free. Share your flight number and set the pickup time for when you expect to be through arrivals; your driver waits up to 60 minutes free from that time.
Can a taxi or private transfer from Venice Airport drive to my hotel in Venice?
Not to a hotel in the historic center. Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto, at the end of the Ponte della Libertà road bridge, are the only places in the island city a car can reach, about 15 km and 25 minutes from the airport in free flow. From Piazzale Roma you walk, take a vaporetto from the stops on the Grand Canal, or take a water taxi you booked ahead. Hotels in Mestre, Treviso, Padua, Jesolo and the mainland are door to door.
How much is a taxi or a private transfer from Venice Airport to Piazzale Roma?
The airport publishes a fixed taxi fare of €40 to Venice (Piazzale Roma), €35 to Mestre center and €45 to the cruise ship terminal. Carriers on TransferBnB quote per vehicle for your flight, your party and your luggage, before you fly, so the price is agreed before you land and the car is sized to the group.
How far is the water taxi and water bus dock from arrivals?
The boats leave from the airport's own water terminal, reached by a covered, raised walkway 365 m long with moving walkways. The ministry that opened it gives 10 minutes for the walkway itself. The terminal has 12 piers: 9 for water taxis, 2 for scheduled boats and 1 for passengers with reduced mobility. For Mestre, Piazzale Roma or anywhere on the mainland, the car leaves from outside arrivals with no walkway.
Is Venice Treviso Airport the same as Venice Marco Polo Airport?
No. Treviso Airport (TSF) is a different airport, run by the same company as Venice Marco Polo (VCE), and some airlines call it Venice-Treviso. By road Treviso Airport is about 30 km and 45 minutes from Piazzale Roma in free flow, against about 15 km and 25 minutes from Marco Polo, and about 25 km from Marco Polo itself. Check the three-letter code on your booking. A private transfer meets either flight.
Do I pay the Venice access fee if I arrive from the airport in 2026?
No, not after 26 July 2026. The City of Venice ended the 2026 trial, and since 27 July the fee does not apply and no exemption request is needed. Whether it returns in later years is for the City to decide. When it did apply, it covered the historic city only: Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, the Marittima cruise terminal and Santa Lucia station were never charged, and guests in paid accommodation in the comune were exempt on request.
How long is the drive from Venice Airport to Cortina d'Ampezzo?
About 1h 55 (146 km) in free flow, by the A 27 motorway and then the SS 51 di Alemagna. Treviso Airport is level on time, also about 1h 55, and 8 km shorter. ANAS requires winter tires or snow chains on board on the SS 51 from 15 November to 15 April. A private transfer drives the whole way in one vehicle, door to door, skis included.
Which airport is best for Verona and Lake Garda: Venice or Verona?
Verona. In free flow Verona Airport is about 25 minutes from the Arena and about 30 minutes from Peschiera del Garda, against about 1h 30 and 1h 40 from Venice Airport. If your flight lands at Venice, the A 4 takes you west in one run: about 127 km to Verona and about 146 km to Peschiera, with no change of train or bus.
Where do cruise ships dock in Venice in 2026, and how far is it from the airport?
Since 1 August 2021 ships over 25,000 GT or over 180 m may not pass through St Mark's basin or the Giudecca canal, so the larger ships berth at Fusina, for ships up to 250 m, at Chioggia, for ships up to 228 m with the Maritime Authority's approval, both with their own terminal, or at the Liguria and Lombardia quays in Marghera, for ships up to 300 m, whose passengers embark and disembark at the Marittima terminal. The Marittima is about 16 km and 25 minutes from the airport, Fusina about 27 km and 35 minutes. Check the berth on your cruise documents and give it in your request.
How far is Venice Airport from Mestre, Padua and Jesolo?
In free flow, about 12 km and 20 minutes to Mestre station, about 47 km and 45 minutes to Padua, and about 31 km and 40 minutes to Lido di Jesolo. All three are on the mainland, so a private transfer drops you at the door.
Can I wait in Venice Airport overnight?
Only with a travel document for the next day or an authorization. The airport is closed from midnight to 04:00 under an ENAC ordinance. For a late landing, book the car for your flight: your carrier follows it and the driver waits up to 60 minutes free from the pickup time.

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. - London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. - Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. - Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. - Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. - Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. - Vienna, Austria
