Book the entry pass before the car

Entry to both Auschwitz I and Birkenau is only with a personalised entry pass, checked against an ID document at the gate. The Memorial asks visitors to book it online at visit.auschwitz.org and says no entry cards are available at the entrance. A visit without a guide is free, but it can start only late in the day: from 13:00 in December, 14:00 in January and November, 15:00 in February, 16:00 in March and October, and 17:00 from April to September. Before those hours, entry is with a Museum guide only.

The Memorial asks visitors to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start time for security checks. Time the car to that.

About This Transfer

Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Kraków Airport, the suitcases go into the boot, and they stay there. The car takes the A4 west for about 33 km to the Chrzanów junction, then provincial road 933 through Libiąż into Oświęcim, and stops at the Auschwitz I visitor centre on Więźniów Oświęcimia, where every visit starts. The drive is about 57 km and takes about 50 minutes in free-flowing traffic.

The airport lies west of Kraków, on the way. From the terminal the drive is about 12 km and about 17 minutes shorter than from the city centre, so a visit on the day you land needs no detour into Kraków first. No bus or train runs direct from the airport to the Memorial.

The car matters most for the bags. The Memorial allows nothing larger than 35 x 25 x 15 cm on the grounds and asks visitors to leave larger luggage in their vehicles; its lockers are paid, and nothing may stay in them overnight. A driver who waits keeps the suitcases in the car for the whole visit and drives you on afterwards.

For every run from the terminal, see our Kraków Airport transfers page. Our airport transfers page explains how carriers track flights, wait and quote per vehicle.

Route Overview

Pickup: Kraków Airport (KRK)

The terminal is open 24 hours. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall. The Kiss&Fly lay-by in front of the terminal is free for only 8 minutes, then PLN 5 for every started 4 minutes, so a driver meeting you inside parks in the P1 multi-storey or the P2 car park instead.

Popular Pickup Points:

• Meet in the arrivals hall, with the flight number tracked
• A delayed landing does not cost you the car
• Suitcases loaded once and kept in the car during the visit
• Terminal open 24 hours, for early and late flights

Drop-off: Auschwitz I, Oświęcim

The Museum stands on the outskirts of Oświęcim, on provincial road 933. Every visit starts at Auschwitz I, where the visitor centre, the entrance and the main car park are, at Więźniów Oświęcimia 55. No vehicle may enter the Museum grounds. Birkenau is 3.5 km away, and there are paid car parks near both sites.

Popular Drop-off Points:

• Auschwitz I visitor centre, Więźniów Oświęcimia 55
• Main car park beside the entrance
• Birkenau car park, for a pickup after the visit
• Hotels in Oświęcim, if you stay the night

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

🕐

Best Travel Times

Time the car to the entry pass, not to the flight. English guided visits start from 8:30 all year, and the Memorial asks you to be at the gate 30 minutes early. A visit without a guide can start only late: 17:00 from April to September, 13:00 in December. An early landing suits a guided morning; an afternoon landing suits an unguided visit, with the suitcases in the car.

🚦

Traffic Patterns

About 33 km of the drive is the A4 motorway west to Chrzanów. The rest is provincial road 933 through Chrzanów and Libiąż into Oświęcim, a single road through towns, and that is where any delay builds. Nobody publishes by how much, so leave margin before a guided start.

🛣️

Road & Border Notes

There is no border: the drive stays in Poland. The A4 between Kraków and Katowice is a toll motorway, and this drive passes one toll plaza, at Balice, where a car pays PLN 18. Ask the carrier to confirm the toll is in the quote.

💡

Carrier Tip

Give the carrier the time on your entry pass and say whether it is guided. Agree before you go in where the driver meets you afterwards, at Auschwitz I or the Birkenau car park, and at what time. A guided visit runs about 3.5 hours; without a guide, the Memorial's own guidance for both sites runs from about 2 hours to 3 hours or more.

Important Information

Entry passes are booked on visit.auschwitz.org
Entry to Auschwitz I and Birkenau is only with a personalised entry pass, and their number is limited. The Memorial asks visitors to book online at visit.auschwitz.org and says no entry cards are available at the entrance; same-day guided passes at the visitor centre are sold only when the Museum organises such a sale. A free pass for a visit without an educator has to be reserved online at least 7 days ahead. Passes are released every day at noon, 90 days ahead. Bring the ID document of the person named on the pass. A booked pass cannot be changed: arrive late for a guided visit and you enter at the first available hour, possibly for a shorter visit or not at all, with no refund. Leave margin between the landing and the start time.
Guided or without a guide
A guided visit for individual visitors costs PLN 150 per person in a language other than Polish, lasts about 3.5 hours, starts at Auschwitz I and includes a headset and the Museum's transfer to Birkenau. A visit without a guide is free and can start only in the late window: 13:00 in December, 14:00 in January and November, 15:00 in February, 16:00 in March and October, 17:00 from April to September.
Bags: 35 x 25 x 15 cm
Nothing larger than 35 x 25 x 15 cm may be carried on the grounds, and bags may be X-rayed at the entrance. The Memorial asks visitors to leave larger luggage in their vehicles. Lockers near the visitor centre cost PLN 5 and must be emptied when the storage closes, 2 hours after the Museum.
Between Auschwitz I and Birkenau
The two sites are 3.5 km apart. The Museum's free shuttle between them is intended for individual visitors on guided tours. Without a guide, the Memorial lists walking about 3 km by the streets, or a taxi; a driver who waits can meet you at the Birkenau car park instead.
Meeting your driver at Kraków Airport
Give the carrier the flight number so it can track the landing. The terminal is open 24 hours, and the Kiss&Fly lay-by is free for only 8 minutes, so the driver meets you in the arrivals hall.
Conduct, photography and age
The Memorial asks for solemnity and respect, and dress befitting the place. Food, alcohol and smoking are not allowed on the grounds. No flash or tripods inside buildings, and no photography at all in Block 4, Room 5, or in the basement of Block 11. The Memorial does not recommend a visit for children under 14.
Closures
The Memorial is open every day except 1 January, 25 December and Easter Sunday. It may also close for state visits and ceremonies, announced ahead on auschwitz.org, and parts of Birkenau are currently closed to visitors. Check the site before the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Auschwitz-Birkenau from Krakow Airport?
About 57 km by road, and about 50 minutes in free-flowing traffic: the A4 west to Chrzanów, then provincial road 933 through Libiąż to the Auschwitz I visitor centre in Oświęcim. Kraków Airport lies west of the city, so the drive from the terminal is about 17 minutes shorter than from Kraków city centre.
How do I get from Krakow Airport to Auschwitz by public transport?
There is no direct bus or train from Kraków Airport to the Auschwitz Memorial. Take the airport train into Kraków, about 20 minutes, then the coach from Kraków MDA bus station, about 1h 25min to the Museum car park. On the timetable the Memorial links, the last coach back leaves the Museum at 18:30 from April to October and at 17:30 from November to March. Suitcases cannot go onto the grounds, so they go into a paid locker. A private transfer takes about 50 minutes from arrivals, and the luggage stays in the car.
Do I need to book Auschwitz entry passes in advance?
Yes. Entry to both Auschwitz I and Birkenau is only with a personalised entry pass. The Memorial asks visitors to book it online at visit.auschwitz.org and says no entry cards are available at the entrance; same-day guided passes are sold at the visitor centre only when the Museum organises such a sale. A free pass for a visit without an educator has to be reserved online at least 7 days ahead. Entry without a guide is free; a guided visit for an individual costs PLN 150 in a language other than Polish. The pass is checked against your ID document and cannot be changed after booking.
Can I visit Auschwitz without a guide?
Yes, but only late in the day. Free entry without a guide starts at 13:00 in December, 14:00 in January and November, 15:00 in February, 16:00 in March and October, and 17:00 from April to September; before that, entry is with a Museum guide only. The last entry is one hour after the unguided start in most months and two hours after it in June, July and August.
How long does a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau take?
A guided visit for individual visitors lasts about 3.5 hours and covers both Auschwitz I and Birkenau. Without a guide, the Memorial's own guidance for both sites runs from about 2 hours to 3 hours or more: a minimum of about an hour at each, or about 1.5 hours at Auschwitz I and at least as long at Birkenau. Add at least 30 minutes before the start time for security checks, and the drive: about 50 minutes each way from Kraków Airport.
How do I get between Auschwitz I and Birkenau?
The two sites are 3.5 km apart. The Memorial runs a free shuttle between them, intended for individual visitors on guided tours. Otherwise it lists walking about 3 km by the streets, or a taxi. A driver who waits can also collect you at the Birkenau car park.
What size bag can I take into Auschwitz?
Nothing larger than 35 x 25 x 15 cm, under the Memorial's regulations valid from 1 July 2026, and bags may be X-rayed. The smaller 30 x 20 x 10 cm figure that still circulates is the 2016 rule. The Memorial asks visitors to leave larger luggage in their vehicles; lockers near the visitor centre cost PLN 5 and must be emptied when the storage closes.
Can I go to Auschwitz straight from Krakow Airport with my luggage?
Yes, by car. The Memorial allows nothing larger than 35 x 25 x 15 cm on the grounds and asks visitors to leave larger luggage in their vehicles. A private transfer with waiting time keeps the suitcases in the car during the visit and drives you on afterwards; without a car, the paid lockers near the visitor centre are the only option.
Is Kraków or Katowice airport closer to Auschwitz?
Kraków, by about 10 minutes. Auschwitz I is about 57 km and 50 minutes by road from Kraków Airport, and about 63 km and 1h from Katowice Airport. The Memorial describes both airports as within about 50 km of Oświęcim.
What does a private transfer from Krakow Airport to Auschwitz-Birkenau cost?
On TransferBnB the price is a quote per vehicle, not per person: you post the flight, the time on your entry pass, how long the driver should wait and where you go afterwards, and verified carriers send offers for your date. The A4 toll at the Balice plaza is PLN 18 for a car; confirm it is in the quote.

Why Book This Route?

  • •About 57 km and 50 minutes from arrivals to the Auschwitz I visitor centre, with no change in Kraków
  • •Suitcases stay in the car, as the Memorial asks, instead of in a paid locker
  • •Timed to your entry pass, with the 30 minutes the security check needs
  • •A driver who waits at Auschwitz I or Birkenau, not tied to the last coach
  • •Quoted per vehicle, so a family or small group compares one fare against several tickets

What our customers say

Thomas B. — London, UK

Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.

Marta R. — Munich, Germany

Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.

Olivier D. — Lyon, France

Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.

Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland

Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.

Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.

Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria

I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
