During Lucca Comics the car may not reach your door

Everything inside Lucca's walls is a limited traffic zone, and taxis and licensed private-hire cars are on the city's permanent white list, so on a normal day a carrier's car collects you at a hotel in the centre. Lucca Comics & Games, from 28 October to 1 November 2026, is the exception: for the 2025 edition the Comune shut taxis and private-hire cars out of the centre from 08:00 to 19:00 on each festival day. If the 2026 ordinance repeats it, a daytime pickup on those dates will be at the walls, so agree the pickup point with your carrier.

Comune di Lucca, permit rulebook of February 2026 and ordinance 2702 of 20 October 2025; festival dates from the organiser, read October 2026.

About This Transfer

Your driver collects you at the door in Lucca, loads the cases once and takes the A11 towards Pisa. Lucca to Pisa Airport is about 35 km and about 30 minutes on a clear road: the A11 west, the A12 south, and the exit signed Pisa centro and Pisa aeroporto. From Piazzale Verdi, just inside the walls, the motorway is under 2 km away.

A hotel inside the walls is not an obstacle. The centre is a limited traffic zone with cameras on the way in and on the way out, and taxis and licensed private-hire cars, NCC in Italian, are on Lucca's permanent white list. Your carrier's car comes to the door. The detail to check is the street: a list of streets and squares in zone A, Via Fillungo and Piazza Anfiteatro among them, is closed from 10:30 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00.

The early flight is where the car matters most. The airport's flight window opens at 06:00. On the Tuesday and the Saturday we sampled in October 2026, the first train and Pisa Mover connection from Lucca reached the airport at 06:18. On the Sunday it reached the airport at 08:28.

By day the train is a fair choice for one person with one bag: €10.60 on a through ticket and 42 to 58 minutes with one change, from a station just outside the walls. A private car suits a family, a group with cases, an early or a Sunday flight, or a hotel deep in the centre. For the drive in the other direction, and the rules for arriving at a hotel inside the walls, see Pisa Airport to Lucca. For the terminal itself and the other towns served from it, see our Pisa Airport transfers page.

  • ✓ A11 and A12 to the Pisa aeroporto exit
  • ✓ About 30 minutes on a clear road, around 35 km
  • ✓ Collected at the door, inside the walls too

Around the whole centre

The Walls of Lucca

The walls are 4.2 km long and their top is a raised promenade around the whole historic centre. On a departure day they are also the fallback pickup line: if your street is closed at the hour you leave, the car meets you where the limited traffic zone ends.

Lucca Turismo, the Walls →
Zone A, closed twice a day

Piazza Anfiteatro

The oval square on the footprint of the Roman amphitheatre is on the Comune's list of places closed to traffic from 10:30 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00. From a hotel on or beside it, set the pickup outside those hours or walk the cases to the nearest open street.

Lucca Turismo, Piazza Anfiteatro →
45 metres, 230 steps

Torre Guinigi

The tower with holm oaks on its roof is 45 metres high and 230 steps up, with no lift, and booking is compulsory at weekends and on holidays. Climb it the day before you leave, not on the morning of the flight.

Route Overview

Pickup: Lucca, inside the walls or outside them

Give your carrier the street address and say whether it is inside the walls. The limited traffic zone does not apply outside them, and zone C inside is open to any car within the size and speed limits. Zones B and A are for authorised vehicles, which is what the white list makes a taxi or an NCC car, and in zone A the driver goes at walking pace. Everywhere inside the walls the limits are 30 km/h, 3.5 tonnes, 6.50 m in length and 2.20 m in width, so for a large group ask which vehicle the offer is for and where it will stop.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • Hotels inside the walls, zones B and A
  • • Piazzale Verdi, bus station and pay car park
  • • Lucca station, Piazzale Ricasoli, outside the walls
  • • Addresses outside the walls

Drop-off: Pisa Airport (PSA)

Pisa has one passenger terminal, and both check-in areas, A and B, are on its ground floor, so there is one building to be dropped at. The airport names no set-down bay for private-hire cars. The short-stay car park, P3, faces the terminal and is free for the first 10 minutes, which covers unloading. The terminal is open to the public from 04:00.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • Check-in Area A, ground floor
  • • Check-in Area B, ground floor
  • • P3 short-stay car park, facing the terminal
  • • Terminal open from 04:00

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

Work back from the time your airline closes check-in or bag drop, not from the departure time. The drive is about 30 minutes on a clear road. By rail the day has two weak points on the days we sampled in October 2026: before the first train, which on the Sunday reached the airport at 08:28, and around midday, when no one-change connection left Lucca between 10:42 and 13:12 on the Saturday and the Sunday. A booked car leaves when your flight needs it to.

Traffic Patterns

About 28 km of the 35 is motorway, and the return takes about 30 minutes on a clear road against about 27 on the way out. We found no road authority figure for traffic time on the A11 or the A12 here, so the margin is your carrier's call. The airport's busiest day of 2025 was a Saturday, 28 June.

Road & Border Notes

No border. The motorway toll is €2.90 for a car from Lucca Est to Pisa Centro in 2026, and tolls are revised every year. The SS12 through San Giuliano Terme has no motorway toll, is about 24 km and takes about 36 minutes on a clear road, about 6 minutes more than the motorway.

Carrier Tip

Give the flight number and the departure time when you post the trip, not only a pickup time, so the carrier can set the margin. Say if the hotel is inside the walls and name the street. If you drove to Lucca yourself and are returning a hire car, your own car has 30 minutes at the hotel door for luggage under the hotel's registration.

When to Travel This Route

Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Low Demand

January was the quietest month at Pisa Airport in 2025. The gate rules do not change with the season: zone A is always closed to cars without authorisation, and the streets that close twice a day close in winter too.

  • Quietest months at the airport
  • Gate rules the same all year
  • Zone A streets closed 10:30 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 21:00

Spring (Mar-May)

High Demand

Traffic at Pisa Airport climbs through the spring: April 2025 carried 545,397 passengers against 369,591 in March. Sunday departures are the ones to plan, because on the days we sampled the first Sunday train ran about two hours later than on the Tuesday and the Saturday.

  • Airport traffic rises from April
  • First Sunday train later, on the days sampled
  • Torre Guinigi booking compulsory at weekends

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Peak Demand

August was the busiest month at Pisa Airport in 2025, with 2.4 times January's passengers, and the busiest single day was Saturday 28 June. Lucca Summer Festival has announced concerts on 17, 20 and 30 July 2027 in the area of the historic walls. On a concert evening, agree the pickup point with your carrier.

  • Busiest months at the airport
  • Lucca Summer Festival concerts by the walls in July
  • Busiest airport day of 2025: Saturday 28 June

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

High Demand

Lucca Comics & Games, from 28 October to 1 November 2026, overrides the normal rules. For the 2025 edition the Comune closed the historic centre to taxis and NCC cars from 08:00 to 19:00 on each festival day. If the 2026 ordinance repeats it, a flight that needs a daytime pickup on those dates means meeting the car at the walls.

  • Lucca Comics & Games, 28 October to 1 November 2026
  • Centre closed to taxis and NCC by day in 2025

Important Information

Pickup Inside the Walls

The area inside Lucca's walls is divided into zones C, B and A. Zone B admits only vehicles with authorisation, and zone A is always closed except to them. Taxis and licensed private-hire cars are on the city's permanent white list, which gives them access to the historic centre for reasons of service, and a car that is not yet registered regularises the transit within 48 hours. Ask your carrier to confirm with the offer that the car will come to the door.

The Streets That Close Twice a Day

In zone A the Comune closes a list of streets and squares to traffic from 10:30 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00: Via Fillungo between Via Roma and Via Busdraghi, Via Roma, Via Beccheria, Via San Paolino, part of Via Santa Croce, Via Cenami, Via Buia, Via Santa Lucia, the east side of Piazza San Michele, Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza San Frediano. If your hotel is on one of them and your pickup falls in those hours, agree a meeting point on the nearest open street.

Early and Sunday Flights

The airport's flight window opens at 06:00 and its terminal at 04:00. On the Tuesday and the Saturday sampled in October 2026, the first train from Lucca left at 05:35 and reached the airport by Pisa Mover at 06:18. On the two Sundays sampled the first train left Lucca at 07:40, and on the Sunday we checked through to the airport it arrived at 08:28. A booked car has no first departure.

How Early to Leave Lucca

Start from your airline's closing time for check-in or bag drop. The drive is about 35 km and about 30 minutes on a clear road, most of it motorway, and we found no published figure for traffic time on it. Give your carrier the flight time and let them set the pickup with their own margin.

Lucca Comics & Games

Lucca Comics & Games runs from 28 October to 1 November 2026. For the 2025 edition the Comune barred taxis and NCC cars from the historic centre from 08:00 to 19:00 on each festival day, and hotel guests' cars from 10:00 to 19:00. The 2025 ordinance is dated 20 October 2025, nine days before the festival opened. If the 2026 ordinance repeats it and you leave during the festival, agree with your carrier where the car will wait and allow time to walk there.

If You Drove to Lucca Yourself

The hotel's registration of your own car covers the whole stay, departure day included: you may drive in by the shortest route and stop for 30 minutes to load the luggage, with a parking disc on display. It does not cover the zone A streets that close from 10:30 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00 during those hours. Cameras record exits as well as entries. None of this applies to your carrier's car, which is on the white list.

Set-Down at Pisa Airport

Pisa has one passenger terminal with check-in areas A and B on the ground floor. The airport names no set-down bay for private-hire cars. The short-stay car park facing the terminal is free for the first 10 minutes.

Child Seats

Carriers provide child seats on request, but you need to book them. Put each child's age in the booking notes, because a booster and a rear-facing infant seat are different equipment. Confirm the seat is in the offer before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take from Lucca to Pisa Airport by car?

About 30 minutes on a clear road for about 35 km, from Piazzale Verdi just inside Lucca's walls to the airport forecourt, by the A11 and A12 motorways. That is a free-flow time, with no traffic and no queue at the toll station. The road without motorway, the SS12 through San Giuliano Terme, is about 24 km and about 36 minutes on a clear road.

How early should I leave Lucca for a flight from Pisa?

Work back from your airline's closing time for check-in or bag drop. The drive from Lucca to Pisa Airport is about 30 minutes on a clear road, and we found no published traffic-time figure for the A11 or A12, so add a margin for the hour you travel. With a private transfer you give the carrier the flight time and they set the pickup.

Can a car collect me from a hotel inside the walls of Lucca?

Yes. The Comune di Lucca keeps taxis and licensed private-hire cars (NCC) on a permanent white list that gives them access to the historic centre for reasons of service. Two limits apply. Some streets in zone A, among them Via Fillungo and Piazza Anfiteatro, are closed from 10:30 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00, and during Lucca Comics & Games in 2025 taxis and NCC cars were barred from the centre from 08:00 to 19:00.

Is there a train from Lucca to Pisa Airport?

Not a direct one. A regional train runs from Lucca to Pisa Centrale in 25 to 37 minutes, and the Pisa Mover takes about 5 minutes from there to the airport. One through ticket covers both for €10.60, and the whole journey takes 42 to 58 minutes with one change. Lucca station is in Piazza Ricasoli, just outside the walls. A private transfer starts at your door and has no change.

What time is the first train from Lucca to Pisa Airport on a Sunday?

On the two Sundays sampled in October 2026 the first train left Lucca at 07:40, and the connection we checked through to the airport arrived at 08:28. On the Tuesday and the Saturday sampled the first train left at 05:35 and the connection reached the airport at 06:18. Timetables change, so check your own date. The airport's flight window opens at 06:00, so for an early Sunday flight a booked car is the way to be on time.

How much is the train from Lucca to Pisa Airport?

€10.60 per adult on one through ticket in October 2026, which is €4.10 for the regional train to Pisa Centrale plus €6.50 for the Pisa Mover. Four people pay €42.40. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle, not per person, so compare it with the total for your group and count the walk or taxi to Lucca station.

Is there a motorway toll between Lucca and Pisa Airport?

Yes, on the usual route. The toll for a car from Lucca Est to Pisa Centro is €2.90 in 2026, on the A11 and A12. The SS12 through San Giuliano Terme passes no motorway toll station and takes about 6 minutes longer on a clear road. Ask whether tolls are included when you compare offers for a private transfer.

Can a car collect me in Lucca during Lucca Comics & Games?

By day in 2025 it could not reach the centre. Lucca Comics & Games runs from 28 October to 1 November 2026. For the 2025 edition the Comune di Lucca barred taxis and private-hire cars from the historic centre from 08:00 to 19:00 on each festival day. That ordinance is dated 20 October 2025, nine days before the festival opened, so the rule for a given year is known late. If the 2026 ordinance repeats it, agree a pickup point at the walls with your carrier.

Where does the driver drop me at Pisa Airport?

At the terminal. Pisa Airport has one passenger terminal, with check-in areas A and B both on the ground floor, so there is no choice of terminal to get wrong. The airport names no set-down bay for private-hire cars, and its short-stay car park facing the terminal is free for the first 10 minutes.

How much does a private transfer from Lucca to Pisa Airport cost?

TransferBnB does not publish a fixed price for this route. You post the trip with your flight time, passenger count, luggage and the address in Lucca, and verified carriers send offers per vehicle that you compare before you pay. The offer should state whether motorway tolls are included.

Why Book This Route?

  • • The car is on Lucca's white list for the gates, so it collects you at a hotel inside the walls instead of at the station outside them
  • • The pickup time is set from your flight, when the first Sunday train we sampled reached the airport at 08:28
  • • The cases are loaded once at the door, with no walk to Piazza Ricasoli and no change at Pisa Centrale
  • • The meeting point is agreed in the booking chat, which matters if your street is one of those in zone A that close from 10:30 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00
  • • Verified carriers compete for the job, and you see the vehicle and the total, tolls included or not, before you pay

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. - London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. - Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. - Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. - Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. - Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. - Vienna, Austria
