By road to Pisa Centrale

Pisa is the larger of Tuscany's two main airports. Lucca is 27 minutes north and Forte dei Marmi 33, Florence is 74 minutes east by either of two roads, and Siena and the Chianti are further than they are from Florence Airport. Every time on this page is a free-flow drive time, with no traffic and no queue at a toll booth.

Arrivals are on the move

Pisa is building a new 7,100 m² building for arrivals, and arrivals move into it when it opens. The operator planned to finish it by early summer 2026, and in February 2026 the local press reported it would come into use only after the summer. Once it does, the old arrivals hall becomes part of departures. A meeting point described as "the arrivals hall" can therefore mean a different door from one season to the next while the works run, which is why the carrier confirms it in the booking chat rather than leaving it to a line in a voucher.

A note on who meets you

Private hire with a driver in Italy is NCC, noleggio con conducente, and the airport lists it as a service of its own, apart from the taxis. It says where the taxi rank is. It names no bay or meeting point for NCC cars.

Flight Monitoring

Your carrier monitors your flight for delays. Share your flight number when booking and your driver adjusts the pickup time to your actual landing. Pisa schedules arrivals up to 23:59 and still handles late flights after midnight, with the terminal kept available for them.

About Pisa Airport

The terminal, the two roads to Florence, and the gates at the far end

Your driver leaves the forecourt at Piazzale D'Ascanio with both of western Tuscany's main roads on the airport's own junctions: the A12 north for Lucca and the Versilia coast, and the FI-PI-LI east for Florence, Siena and the Chianti. Pisa Galileo Galilei, IATA code PSA, handled 5.9 million passengers in 2025, which made it the 11th busiest airport in Italy and the larger of Tuscany's two. Toscana Aeroporti runs both and splits them on purpose: low-cost holiday flights here, full-service carriers to the European hubs at Florence Airport. It is the Tuscan gateway on our Italy transfers map.

One passenger terminal does all the work, with 34 check-in desks and 15 gates. It is open to the public from 04:00 to 24:00.

Summer carries the year. August 2025 brought 679,242 passengers through, 2.4 times the 282,735 of January, and the busiest single day was Saturday 28 June, with 26,705. Saturday is also the one day on which the airport declares a higher hourly capacity, 14 movements against 13.

Two roads to Florence

Florence has two roads from here, and on an empty day they tie.

The motorway line, A12 then A11, runs 104 km to the centre of Florence and costs a car €8.00 between the Pisa Centro and Firenze Ovest toll stations. The FI-PI-LI, the dual carriageway between Florence, Pisa and Livorno, is about 23 km shorter and free for cars. A free-flow router gives 74 minutes for each.

The catch is the free road's condition. The FI-PI-LI carries more than 50,000 vehicles a day, 17% of them heavy, and its own manager describes it as ageing fast under that traffic. Figures that give Pisa to Florence as a flat 80 km are measuring the free road only.

Ask your carrier to confirm that the quote covers the toll, whichever road the day calls for.

The gate at the far end

Most of these drives end at a camera.

Florence switches its limited traffic zone gates on from 07:30 to 20:00 Monday to Friday and from 07:30 to 16:00 on Saturday. Taxis and NCC cars licensed by a Tuscan municipality are on its permanent whitelist and may use every sector, while a self-drive car needs its hotel to register the plate or a paid day pass. Siena's zone applies every day, around the clock, and admits NCC and taxi cars on its permanent list or by registering the entry.

Lucca's walls enclose a camera-gated zone that, since new gates went live on 19 January 2026, fines unauthorised exits as well as entries. Pisa keeps NCC cars on its whitelist or gives them a free temporary permit. In Florence and Siena an NCC car may not park inside the zone: it stops, with the driver on board, and leaves.

A few hours in Pisa

Pisa Centrale is 3 km and 5 minutes from the forecourt by road. The airport's left luggage office opens from 08:00 to 20:00 and charges €10 a day for a bag under 70 cm and €15 for a larger one, so a long gap before a flight home can be an afternoon at the Leaning Tower with free hands.

Read down the Pisa column and Lucca and the coast win. Read down the Florence column and Siena and the Chianti do.

Siena is 40 km and 38 minutes nearer to Florence Airport, and Greve in Chianti takes twice as long from Pisa. Lucca is the mirror image, half the distance from Pisa that it is from Florence Airport, and Forte dei Marmi is 43 km from Pisa against 100 km.

The flight often decides it anyway, because the two airports do not carry the same airlines. Land at Pisa for a week in the Chianti and the drive is still a single run, on roads with no motorway and no toll.

Use the table to check a quote, not to guess one: it shows how far the car goes and what the road charges it.

TransferBnB is a marketplace. You post the trip, verified carriers who work these roads send offers per vehicle for your flight, party and luggage, and you choose one before you fly. We publish no price from Pisa Airport because no offer exists until a carrier has seen your trip.

The airport's taxis are no yardstick either: the airport says their fares are variable and run on the meter, and it publishes no fixed fare to anywhere. Tolls are the car fare for the stations named by the motorway company and are revised every year.

Compare the prices and the coach and the train win. Compare where each one ends and neither does.

The rail route to Florence is a good one and we are not going to pretend otherwise: more than 50 direct regional trains left Pisa Centrale on each of the two days we sampled, a Tuesday and a Saturday, and €16.30 buys the Pisa Mover and the train on one ticket. The Pisa Mover alone is €6.50, two thirds of the fare of the hour-long train it feeds. The direct coach ran 10 or 11 times a day on the two October 2026 days we sampled, and by day it sets down at a park-and-ride on the tram line, not in the centre.

Land at midday with a backpack and the through ticket is the sensible way into Florence.

Land late with four people and their suitcases, and that is €65.20 and two changes of vehicle before anyone has found the hotel.

Why Book Your Pisa Airport Transfer with TransferBnB

The road, the toll and the gate at the far end, settled before you land.

A driver who knows both roads

The A11 and the FI-PI-LI tie in free flow. Which is quicker on the day is a local driver's call, not a route planner's.

Verified carriers

Every carrier is verified by TransferBnB before it can quote on your trip.

Quote before you fly

Carriers see your flight, party and luggage and quote a price per vehicle, so the figure is settled before the wheels turn.

Vehicle sized to your group

Compare saloons, MPVs and minivans side by side, so a family with a fortnight of luggage is not split across two cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does my transfer driver meet me at Pisa Airport?
Pisa Airport has one passenger terminal, and arrivals are on its ground floor. A private transfer is an NCC car, not a taxi, so it does not use the taxi rank on the front of the airport, and the airport names no waiting bay for NCC cars. Arrivals are also moving into a new building, so confirm the exact meeting point with your carrier in the booking chat before you fly.
How long does a transfer from Pisa Airport to Florence take?
About 74 minutes to the centre of Florence in free-flowing traffic, by either of two roads. The A12 and A11 motorways run 104 km and cost a car €8.00 in tolls; the FI-PI-LI dual carriageway is about 23 km shorter and free for cars. A private transfer takes whichever is moving better and ends at your hotel door.
How much is a transfer from Pisa Airport to Florence?
TransferBnB has no fixed fare from Pisa Airport: verified carriers quote per vehicle for your flight, party and luggage, and you choose. For scale, the public route by Pisa Mover and train costs €16.30 per person to Santa Maria Novella station, so €65.20 for four, and the airport's taxis run on the meter with no fixed fare published.
Is there a direct train from Pisa Airport to Florence?
No. No train leaves the airport itself: the Pisa Mover takes about 5 minutes to Pisa Centrale, and regional trains run from there to Firenze Santa Maria Novella. One through ticket covers both for €16.30, and the fastest connection takes 1h 11min. A direct coach also runs in about 60 minutes from €14.99, but by day it stops at a tram park-and-ride outside the centre. A private transfer is one vehicle from arrivals to your door.
How much is the Pisa Mover from the airport to Pisa Centrale?
€6.50 for a single and €13.00 for a return, for a ride of about 5 minutes. Lower figures circulate; €6.50 is the operator's own fare table. On a through rail ticket the €6.50 is added to the train fare with no discount. For a hotel in Pisa itself, a transfer covers the 3 km to the station district in about 5 minutes of driving and does not stop at the station.
How far is Pisa Airport from Lucca?
34 km and 27 minutes by road in free-flowing traffic, on the A12 and A11 to the Lucca Est exit, with a €2.90 toll for a car. Lucca's historic centre is a camera-gated limited traffic zone that fines unauthorised exits as well as entries, so ask your carrier to confirm with the quote that the car may reach your address inside the walls.
Is Pisa or Florence Airport better for Siena and the Chianti?
Florence Airport is nearer. Siena is 78 km and 1h 16min from Florence Airport against 118 km and 1h 54min from Pisa, and Greve in Chianti is 45 minutes from Florence Airport against 1h 30min from Pisa. If your flight lands at Pisa anyway, the drive to Siena or the Chianti uses no motorway and pays no toll, and a transfer does it in one vehicle from arrivals to the door.
How do I get from Pisa Airport to Forte dei Marmi or Viareggio?
By car, Forte dei Marmi is 43 km and 33 minutes up the A12 to the Versilia exit, with a €4.00 toll, and Viareggio is 32 km and 32 minutes. By rail, the Pisa Mover and a regional train reach Viareggio for €10.60, but the station that serves Forte dei Marmi is in Querceta, about 4 km from the town centre. A private transfer goes to the villa or the beach club itself.
Is the FI-PI-LI between Pisa and Florence a toll road?
No. The Firenze-Pisa-Livorno dual carriageway is free for cars. Regione Toscana has said a toll for lorries only could be considered from 2028, and nothing is in force. The motorway alternative, the A11, costs a car €8.00 between Pisa Centro and Firenze Ovest.
Can a transfer drive to my hotel inside the ZTL in Florence or Siena?
A licensed car can. Florence keeps taxis and NCC cars licensed by a Tuscan municipality on a permanent whitelist for every sector of its limited traffic zone, and Siena admits NCC and taxi cars to its whole zone, on its permanent list or by registering the entry, every day around the clock. An NCC car may not park inside either zone, so it sets you down and leaves. Ask your carrier to confirm its licence with the quote.
How far is Pisa Airport from the Livorno cruise port and the Cinque Terre?
The Livorno cruise terminal is 25 km and 25 minutes from Pisa Airport, with a €1.80 motorway toll. La Spezia, where the Cinque Terre trains start, is 84 km and about 60 minutes on the A12, with an €8.50 toll. Both are free-flow drive times, so leave a margin before a sailing.
What happens if my flight to Pisa is delayed?
Your carrier monitors your flight and adjusts the pickup to your actual landing. Share your flight number when booking. Pisa schedules arrivals until 23:59 and still handles late flights after midnight, and a driver already waiting for you is worth more the later it gets.

What our customers say

Thomas B. — London, UK

Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.

Marta R. — Munich, Germany

Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.

Olivier D. — Lyon, France

Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.

Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland

Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.

Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.

Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria

I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
