Florence Airport sits on the north-west edge of its own city, where Viale Guidoni meets the A1 and the A11. A car leaving the forecourt is on the motorway to Lucca and the coast at once, and on the road to Siena a few kilometres later. The city is the short trip; the hills are the reason for the car.

A note on who meets you

Private hire with a driver in Italy is NCC, Noleggio con Conducente, a different licence from a taxi and booked ahead by definition. The airport's own pages show a taxi rank, the terminal desk of one resident NCC consortium and no meeting point for a driver booked anywhere else, so your carrier names the spot in the booking chat. With hold luggage, allow about half an hour: in 2025 the first bag reached the belt within 27 minutes 15 seconds of the aircraft parking in 90% of cases, and the last within 30 minutes 26 seconds.

If your flight lands in Pisa instead

Diversions are a known risk here, for the reasons in the runway section below. Share your flight number when you book so the carrier sees a delay or a diversion as it happens, and message the carrier in the booking chat if you land elsewhere. Pisa Airport is 100 km and about 1h 08min from Florence Airport by motorway.

About Florence Airport

The tram, the ZTL, the runway, and Florence against Pisa

Your car leaves the forecourt and stays on city streets all the way: no motorway, and Santa Maria Novella station is 7 km away. The airport puts itself 4 km from the centre and the ride at about 15 minutes. Its official name is Amerigo Vespucci; the tram map calls it Peretola. Toscana Aeroporti runs it, the same company that runs Pisa, and it is one of the two Tuscan airports on our Italy transfers page.

The season here is a plateau, not a spike. The airport carried 3.85 million passengers in 2025, its best year, and every month from April to October brought more than 350,000 of them. September was the busiest month, with 395,153, and August was quieter than May or June. The busiest single day was 7 September, with 15,149 passengers.

Book a September arrival with the notice you would give August anywhere else.

The tram, answered straight

For one person with a cabin bag and a hotel near the station, take the tram.

Line T2 costs €2.00 on the urban ticket, valid for 90 minutes, and older guides that still quote €1.70 are out of date. The stop is 2 minutes on foot from arrivals, a tram comes every 4 to 8 minutes through the weekday daytime, depending on the season, and the operator gives 20 minutes to the centre. The line now ends at San Marco - Università, 35 minutes from the airport by the airport's own figure. Two people pay €4.00.

The catch is the suitcase. The tram carries one bag of up to 10 kg and 55x40x20 cm free, wants a second ticket for anything larger, and refuses a bag over 80x45x25 cm or over 20 kg outright. It has no dedicated luggage space, so your bags stay beside you.

The second catch is the clock. The last tram leaves the airport at 23:58 from Sunday to Thursday, while the airport is open to scheduled flights until 23:59 and admits delayed ones after midnight.

Land at 14:00 on a Tuesday with a backpack and the tram is the right call.

Land at 23:45 on a Wednesday with a family and four suitcases, and it is a car or nothing.

The ZTL and the hotel door

The tram stops where the rails are. Your hotel may not be there.

Central Florence is a camera-gated ZTL in five sectors, switched on from 07:30 to 20:00 on weekdays and from 07:30 to 16:00 on Saturdays, with extra summer nights from Thursday to Saturday between April and early October. Florence grants its permanent whitelist, for every sector and the bus lanes, only to taxis and NCC cars licensed by a Tuscan municipality. An NCC car licensed outside Tuscany has to register each entry by SMS, at €1, before it drives in.

So ask your carrier to confirm the car is on Florence's permanent list. An NCC car may stop at your door with the driver on board but not park, which is all a drop-off needs. A hire car is cleared by the hotel, which registers the plate within three hours of your entry, and may then stop for 30 minutes.

Florence or Pisa

It depends on where you sleep, not on where the cheaper flight lands.

Read the table by your first night. Florence wins the top four rows, and Siena is 40 km nearer from here than from Pisa. The bottom three go the other way: Lucca is about half the distance from Pisa Airport and Forte dei Marmi less than half.

The counter-argument is the flight. Pisa carried almost 6 million passengers in 2025, and the operator itself describes Florence as the city airport for short and medium-haul flights and Pisa as the one for large volumes and long haul. If the only seat is into Pisa, our Pisa Airport transfers page has that side of the map.

The short runway

Florence has one runway, and it is 1,560 m long.

It lies between Monte Morello and the A11, so landings almost always come in from one direction, with 1,455 m of landing distance. The other direction offers 977 m and is closed to commercial landings. A tailwind above about 10 knots brings go-arounds and diversions, about 1,000 of them in a single year by the operator's count, and fog sends flights to Pisa or to airports in other regions.

A 2,200 m replacement runway is in the airport's Masterplan 2035. Until it exists, give a same-day connection out of Florence some slack, and keep your carrier's chat open on a windy day.

South to Siena and the Chianti

This is where the car stops being a convenience.

The Siena run leaves the airport over the Ponte all'Indiano viaduct, takes 8.1 km of the A1 and then the Firenze-Siena link for 54.9 km, a road with no toll station: 78 km in all and about 1h 16min in free-flowing traffic. Siena's ZTL is switched on all day, every day; NCC cars and taxis on its permanent list drive in, and any other registers the entry online. For Greve the last 5.1 km are on the SR222, the Chiantigiana.

The airport's own guide lists the tram into Florence and a coach to Pisa, and nothing towards Siena or the Chianti. The public route to Siena is the tram to Santa Maria Novella, then a direct train of 1h 27min to 1h 38min for €10.80, or the 131R bus in 1h 15min. Both thin out on Sundays, to 9 direct trains and 9 buses, and the timetable for Saturday 17 October 2026 shows no direct train at all.

West to Lucca and the Versilia

The A11 starts beside the terminal and does most of the work.

Lucca is 65.8 km of motorway to the Lucca Est exit, 69 km and about 47 minutes door to door in free flow, and its historic centre is a camera-gated ZTL. Forte dei Marmi is 100 km, with a motorway toll of €9.30 for a car to the Versilia exit; the run to the Pisa exit costs €8.00. The railway alternative ends at a station in Querceta, about 4 km from the middle of Forte dei Marmi, and only 8 to 10 trains a day run there direct from Florence.

Your price comes from carriers, quoted for your trip.

TransferBnB is a marketplace: you post the trip, verified local carriers send offers per vehicle once they see your flight, your party and your bags, and you choose. We do not print a transfer price here because none of these routes has one we can stand behind yet.

Read the public column by party size. The tram is €2.00 a head, and the taxi's €28 is per car, before €1.20 for each bag and for a fourth passenger. Beyond the city the column empties: the airport lists no public service to the Chianti, San Gimignano or the port at Livorno, and the rail fares to Siena, Lucca and the coast all start with the tram into town.

Drive times are free flow, with no traffic and no queue at a toll booth. Motorway tolls are revised every year; ask the carrier to confirm the toll is inside the quote.

Read down the price column and the tram wins. Read down where each option ends and it wins only for a hotel on the tram line.

The hire car deserves a second look before you take it into Florence. The desks are not in the terminal but in Via Palagio degli Spini, a free shuttle ride away, and inside the ZTL the car depends on your hotel registering its plate. For a week in the hills it earns its keep. For two nights in the centre it is a parking problem.

Why Book Your Florence Airport Transfer with TransferBnB

What the tram and the taxi rank leave open, settled before you land.

The hotel door, inside the ZTL

Florence's permanent ZTL list is open to Tuscan-licensed NCC cars. Ask the carrier to confirm the car is on it and the drop-off is at your door, not at a tram stop.

Verified carriers

Every carrier is verified by TransferBnB before it can quote on your trip.

Quote before you fly

Carriers quote per vehicle for the address you give, in the city or an hour into the hills. No meter once you leave the taxi's fixed-fare area.

Every bag in one vehicle

The tram turns away a bag over 20 kg and the taxi adds €1.20 for each one. A carrier quotes for the party and the luggage you entered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does my transfer driver meet me at Florence Airport?
Arrivals at Florence Airport are on the ground floor of the passenger terminal, and the tourist information desk faces the arrivals exit. The airport publishes a taxi rank in front of the terminal and the desk of one resident NCC consortium, but no meeting point for a driver you booked elsewhere, so your carrier confirms the exact spot in the booking chat before you fly. A pre-booked transfer is not hailed from the taxi rank: the driver is there for you by name.
Should I take the tram or a private transfer from Florence Airport to the city centre?
For one person with a cabin bag, take the tram. Line T2 costs €2.00, leaves from a stop 2 minutes on foot from arrivals, runs every 4 to 8 minutes through the weekday daytime, depending on the season, and reaches the centre in about 20 minutes. It stops being the answer with hold luggage, because the tram has no dedicated luggage space, charges a second ticket for a bag over 10 kg and refuses any bag over 20 kg, and after 23:58 from Sunday to Thursday, when the last tram has gone. A private transfer takes your party and every bag from arrivals to the hotel door at any hour.
How much is a taxi from Florence Airport to the city centre?
A Florence taxi charges a fixed fare of €28 by day, €30 at the holiday rate and €32 at night, from 22:00 to 06:00, per car, plus €1.20 for each bag and for a fourth passenger. The fixed fare covers hotels and private addresses inside the central area the Comune di Firenze draws on its tariff map; anywhere else is on the meter, at €2.10 per km outside Florence and its neighbouring communes with motorway tolls paid by the passenger. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle before you fly, to any address in Tuscany.
What time is the last tram from Florence Airport?
The last T2 tram leaves the Peretola Aeroporto stop at 23:58 from Sunday to Thursday and at 01:15 on Friday and Saturday nights; the first leaves at 05:00 every day. The airport is open to scheduled flights until 23:59 and admits delayed ones after midnight, so a late weeknight arrival can miss it. A pre-booked driver waits for the flight, not for the timetable.
Can a private transfer drive into the Florence ZTL to my hotel?
Yes, with one condition worth checking. Florence grants its permanent ZTL whitelist, good for every sector and the bus lanes, only to taxis and NCC private-hire cars licensed by a Tuscan municipality; an NCC car licensed elsewhere has to register each entry by SMS, for €1, before it drives in. An NCC car may stop at your door with the driver on board but may not park. Ask your carrier to confirm the car is on Florence's permanent list.
How long does it take from Florence Airport to Siena?
About 1 hour 16 minutes by car for 78 km in free-flowing traffic, on a short stretch of the A1 and then the Firenze-Siena link, which has no toll station. By public transport you take the tram to Santa Maria Novella first, then a direct train of 1 hour 27 minutes to 1 hour 38 minutes for €10.80, or the 131R bus, 1 hour 15 minutes from the bus station. A private transfer does it in one vehicle from arrivals, and an NCC car can be cleared for Siena's all-day ZTL where a hire car cannot simply drive in.
How do I get from Florence Airport to the Chianti?
By car: Greve in Chianti is 40 km and about 45 minutes from the airport in free-flowing traffic, and Barberino Tavarnelle is 38 km and about 40 minutes. The airport's own guide lists the tram into Florence as its public link and nothing that runs towards the Chianti, so plan on the car. A private transfer goes from arrivals to the address you give, villa and winery hotel included.
Should I fly into Florence or Pisa for Tuscany?
Fly into Florence for Florence, the Chianti and Siena, and into Pisa for Lucca, the Versilia coast and Pisa itself. From Florence Airport, Siena is 78 km and Greve in Chianti 40 km; from Pisa Airport they are 118 km and 93 km. Lucca is the reverse, 34 km from Pisa Airport against 69 km from Florence, and Forte dei Marmi is 43 km against 100 km. Pisa is the bigger airport, with almost 6 million passengers in 2025 against 3.85 million, so compare flights into both.
What happens if my flight to Florence is diverted to Pisa?
It is a known risk at this airport. Florence has one runway of 1,560 m, landings almost always come in from one direction, and the airport operator counts about 1,000 go-arounds and diversions in a year, with fog sending flights to Pisa or to airports in other regions. Share your flight number when you book and message your carrier in the booking chat if the flight lands elsewhere: Pisa Airport is 100 km and about 1 hour 8 minutes from Florence Airport by motorway.
How far is Florence Airport from Lucca and Forte dei Marmi?
Lucca is 69 km and about 47 minutes from Florence Airport in free-flowing traffic, on the A11 motorway that starts beside the terminal. Forte dei Marmi is 100 km and about 1 hour 10 minutes, with a motorway toll of €9.30 for a car to the Versilia exit. Both are closer to Pisa Airport, at 34 km and 43 km, so compare flights to both before you book.

What our customers say

Thomas B. — London, UK

Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.

Marta R. — Munich, Germany

Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.

Olivier D. — Lyon, France

Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.

Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland

Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.

Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.

Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria

I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
