A pickup inside Siena's old town depends on the street and the hour
The historic centre of Siena is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) with camera gates, in force 0 to 24 on every day of the week. A licensed private-hire car is admitted to collect you: it is either on the Comune's whitelist or it registers the entry online for that day. The innermost streets, which the Comune calls Zona Y storica and which include Banchi di Sopra, Via di Città and Il Campo, take a licensed private-hire car or taxi only from 06:00 to 10:00. For a pickup from a hotel there outside that window, agree with the carrier the nearest street the car can reach.
Comune di Siena, ZTL regulation of May 2026 and the NCC and taxi service page, read October 2026.
About This Transfer
Your driver collects you at your hotel in Siena at the time your flight needs, the cases go in the boot once, and the next stop is the departures area at Florence Airport. Siena to Florence Airport is about 82 km and about 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road: the Siena link, the RA 3, for about 55 km from the Siena Nord junction, then about 14 km of the A1 and about 4 km of the A11 to the airport.
Work back from the flight. The airport's advice is to be at check-in about 2 hours before the scheduled departure, or earlier if your airline says so. A pickup in Siena 3 hours 30 minutes before departure covers the drive and those 2 hours and leaves about 15 minutes spare on a clear road. Add your own margin for the hour you travel.
An early flight is where the car has no substitute. On the days sampled, the first weekday direct train from Siena reached Santa Maria Novella at 07:23, and the first fast bus reaches the Florence bus station at 07:30, each still a 20-minute tram ride from the terminal.
On Sundays the first fast bus does not leave Siena until 11:10.
A licensed car is admitted to Siena's ZTL to collect you, and the innermost streets around Piazza del Campo take a private-hire car or taxi only from 06:00 to 10:00. If you are still planning the arrival, the Florence Airport to Siena page covers that direction, and our Florence Airport transfers page explains how the airport works.
- ✓ About 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road, around 82 km
- ✓ Pickup timed to your flight, at any hour
- ✓ Collected inside Siena's ZTL where the rules admit a car
Sights Along the Route
Your driver covers the distance while you enjoy the scenery.
Monteriggioni
A 13th-century Sienese outpost against Florence, with walls of about 570 metres and 14 towers, and its own junction on the Siena link. A stop on the way to the airport adds about 2 km and about 8 minutes of driving. It suits an afternoon flight: ask for the stop and the waiting time when you post the trip.
Visit Tuscany, Monteriggioni →San Gimignano
Thirteen of the town's towers survive, of 65 at its height. From Siena it is 39 km and 44 minutes, then 66 km and 63 minutes to the airport, about 23 km more than the direct run. With cases in the car and a flight to catch, it is a stop for an evening departure only, quoted as part of the trip.
Visit Tuscany, San Gimignano →Piazza del Campo
The shell-shaped square in nine sections is the centre of Siena's UNESCO-listed old town, and the Palio is run on it on 2 July and 16 August. Il Campo is inside Zona Y storica, so outside the 06:00 to 10:00 window no private-hire car or taxi reaches the square. Agree the pickup street with the carrier and leave time to walk to it.

Pickup: Siena, your hotel or the edge of the old town
The car comes to the address you give. Inside the ZTL a licensed car stops to load and leaves; it may not park, and one that registers an occasional entry may stop for at most 30 minutes, so be ready with your cases at the agreed time. In Zona Y storica a licensed private-hire car or taxi may pass only from 06:00 to 10:00, and the Comune words that permission as taking clients to accommodation there, so a pickup at the door in that window is for the carrier to confirm. Outside the ZTL, Via Tozzi beside Piazza Gramsci is where the fast bus stops, and the railway station is on Piazzale Carlo Rosselli.
Popular Pickup Points:
- • Hotels inside the ZTL
- • Streets beside Zona Y storica
- • Piazza Gramsci and Via Tozzi
- • Siena station, Piazzale Carlo Rosselli
Drop-off: Florence Airport (FLR)
The car sets you down at the departures area on the ground floor. The 40 check-in desks are on the first floor, reached by 2 lifts, an escalator and a staircase. The terminal opens at 04:00, and check-in normally opens 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes before a departure. The airport has no left-luggage office, so there is nowhere to leave a case if you arrive long before the desks open.
Popular Drop-off Points:
- • Departures area, ground floor
- • 40 check-in desks on the first floor
- • 2 lifts and an escalator up to check-in
- • Terminal open from 04:00

Best Travel Times
Leave Siena 3 hours 30 minutes before the flight and you are at check-in about 2 hours ahead with about 15 minutes in hand on a clear road. For a hotel in Zona Y storica, a licensed private-hire car or taxi reaches the door only from 06:00 to 10:00, and a pickup outside that window is at the nearest street outside the zone. The terminal opens at 04:00, so even the earliest departure can be reached by car.
Traffic Patterns
Every time on this page is a clear-road time; no authority publishes a traffic-time figure for the Siena link or for the A1 round Florence. The link is under a planned maintenance programme. ANAS's notice of 29 August 2024 said the works had been paused for that summer's exodus and were resuming, with two-way running on one carriageway between Poggibonsi Sud and Colle Val d'Elsa Nord. Ask your carrier what margin they add at your hour, and take it.
Road & Border Notes
No border. The Siena link, about 56 km long, has no toll. About 18 km of the return are toll motorway, the A1 and the A11, and a carrier's offer should say whether the toll is included. The return is about 4 km longer than the drive from the airport, because it stays on the A1 to the A11.
Carrier Tip
Post the trip with the flight number and the departure time, not just a pickup time, so the carrier can check the margin. Give the hotel's exact address and ask where the car will stop. If the hotel is in Zona Y storica and the pickup is outside 06:00 to 10:00, ask the hotel how it moves cases to the nearest street a car can reach.

When to Travel This Route
Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.
Winter (Dec-Feb)
Low DemandJanuary was the quietest month at Florence Airport in 2025, with 201,419 passengers. Fog is a known risk at this airport: the operator says low visibility cancels flights or sends them elsewhere. Check your flight's status before the car leaves Siena.
- Quietest months at the airport
- Fog can cancel or divert flights
- ZTL in force as in every month
Spring (Mar-May)
High DemandApril 2025 carried 351,743 passengers through the airport, and the season stays at that level into the autumn. Book the car when you know the flight if you leave at a weekend.
- Airport traffic steps up from April
- Monteriggioni is an easy stop for an afternoon flight
- Sunday bus and train timetables are thinner
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Peak DemandThe Palio is run on 2 July and 16 August, and each race takes four days, from 29 June to 2 July and from 13 to 16 August. Piazza del Campo is the track. If you leave Siena on one of those days, ask your hotel what changes for a car at its door, and agree the pickup street with the carrier the day before.

- Four days of events around each race
- August 2025: 385,343 passengers at the airport
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
High DemandSeptember 2025 was the airport's busiest month, with 395,153 passengers, almost twice January's. Ask your carrier whether works are on the Siena link when you travel, and let them set the pickup time.

Important Information
When to Leave Siena
The airport advises being at check-in about 2 hours before the scheduled departure, or as your airline says. The drive is about 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road. A pickup 3 hours 30 minutes before departure covers both and leaves about 15 minutes spare. Your airline's own closing time for check-in and bag drop is the deadline that counts.
Being Collected Inside Siena's ZTL
Siena's ZTL is in force 0 to 24, every day, with camera gates. A licensed private-hire car (NCC) is either on the Comune's permanent whitelist for the whole zone or registers an occasional entry online, free, for that day only, with a stop of at most 30 minutes. An NCC car may never park inside, so the pickup is a loading stop: have the cases at the door at the agreed time.
Zona Y Storica: 06:00 to 10:00 Only
The innermost streets of Siena, among them Banchi di Sopra, Via di Città and Il Campo, are a mainly pedestrian zone the Comune calls Zona Y storica. A licensed private-hire car or taxi may pass there only from 06:00 to 10:00, and the Comune words the permission as taking clients to accommodation or a business inside the zone. Ask your carrier to confirm a pickup at the door in that window. For a pickup outside it, the car waits at the nearest street outside the zone.
Early Flights and Sundays
On the days we sampled, the first direct train from Siena reached Santa Maria Novella at 07:23 on a Tuesday and a Saturday and at 08:04 on a Sunday, with a 20-minute tram ride still to go. With 2 hours in hand at the airport, that rules out public transport for any flight before about 09:45 on a weekday and about 10:25 on a Sunday. The first 131R fast bus leaves Siena at 06:15 on weekdays and at 11:10 on Sundays and holidays. On one sampled Saturday, 17 October 2026, no direct train ran at all.
Check-in at Florence Airport
The 40 check-in desks are on the first floor of the terminal, reached by 2 lifts, an escalator and a staircase from the ground-floor departures area. Check-in normally opens 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes before departure, and the terminal opens at 04:00. There is no left-luggage office at the airport.
The Toll
The Siena link (RA 3) is a toll-free road run by ANAS. About 18 km of the return, on the A1 and the A11, are toll motorway. Check that a carrier's offer says whether the toll is included.
Child Seats
Carriers provide child seats on request, but you need to book them. Put each child's age in the booking notes, because a booster and a rear-facing infant seat are different equipment. Confirm the seat is in the offer before you pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take from Siena to Florence Airport by car?
About 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road for about 82 km, measured from Piazza Gramsci in Siena to the Florence Airport forecourt. The drive is about 55 km of the Siena link, the RA 3, from the Siena Nord junction, then about 14 km of the A1 and about 4 km of the A11. No authority publishes a traffic time for these roads, so add a margin before a flight.
How early should I leave Siena for a flight from Florence Airport?
About 3 hours 30 minutes before departure by car, plus your own margin for traffic. Florence Airport advises being at check-in about 2 hours before the scheduled departure, or as your airline says, and the drive from Siena is about 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road, which leaves about 15 minutes spare. By public transport you need longer: the bus or train to Florence and the tram to the airport are at least 1 hour 31 minutes of riding before any wait. A private transfer is timed to your flight and collects you at the hotel.
Can a private driver pick me up at a hotel inside Siena's ZTL?
Yes. Siena's ZTL is in force all day, every day, but licensed private-hire (NCC) cars and taxis are admitted: a car is either on the Comune di Siena's permanent whitelist or registers an occasional entry online for that day, with a stop of at most 30 minutes. The exception is Zona Y storica, the innermost streets including Banchi di Sopra, Via di Città and Il Campo, where a licensed private-hire car or taxi may pass only from 06:00 to 10:00. The Comune words that permission as taking clients to accommodation, so ask your carrier to confirm a pickup at the door in that window. Outside it, the car waits at the nearest street outside the zone, agreed with your carrier in advance.
Is there a direct bus or train from Siena to Florence Airport?
No. Public transport from Siena goes to central Florence, and the T2 tram covers the last leg to the airport in about 20 minutes for €2.00. The 131R fast bus takes 1 hour 15 minutes from Via Tozzi to the Florence bus station; a direct regional train takes 1 hour 11 minutes to 1 hour 57 minutes to Santa Maria Novella for €10.80. The tram carries one bag up to 10 kg free and refuses any bag over 20 kg. A private transfer goes from your hotel to the departures area in one vehicle, in about 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road.
Can I reach an early morning flight at Florence Airport from Siena by public transport?
Not a flight before about 09:45 on a weekday, with 2 hours in hand at the airport. On the days we sampled, the first direct train from Siena left at 05:43 and reached Santa Maria Novella at 07:23, and the first 131R fast bus left at 06:15 and reached the Florence bus station at 07:30, each with a 20-minute tram ride still to go. On a Sunday the first direct train arrived at 08:04 and the first fast bus left Siena at 11:10. The terminal opens at 04:00, and a private transfer leaves Siena at whatever hour the flight needs.
Is there a toll between Siena and Florence Airport?
On part of the drive. The Siena link, the RA 3, is a toll-free road run by ANAS and makes up about 55 of the 82 km. The last stretch, about 14 km of the A1 and about 4 km of the A11, is toll motorway. With a private transfer, the carrier's offer should state whether the toll is included.
Where does the car drop me at Florence Airport?
At the departures area on the ground floor of the passenger terminal. The 40 check-in desks are on the first floor, reached by 2 lifts, an escalator and a staircase. Check-in normally opens 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes before departure, and the airport has no left-luggage office, so there is little reason to arrive long before your desks open.
Can I stop at Monteriggioni on the way from Siena to Florence Airport?
Yes, if the flight leaves room. Monteriggioni has its own junction on the Siena link, 14 km and 21 minutes from Piazza Gramsci in Siena, and a stop there adds about 2 km and about 8 minutes of driving to the transfer, before the time you spend inside the walls. Ask for the stop and the waiting time when you post the trip, so the carrier sets the pickup time around it.
How much does a private transfer from Siena to Florence Airport cost?
TransferBnB does not publish a fixed price for this route. You post the trip with your flight, passenger count, luggage and the hotel's address, and verified carriers send offers per vehicle that you compare before you pay. The carrier's offer should state whether the A1 and A11 toll is included.

What our customers say
Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
Thomas B. - London, UK Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
Marta R. - Munich, Germany Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
Olivier D. - Lyon, France Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
Sarah K. - Dublin, Ireland Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
Pieter V. - Amsterdam, Netherlands I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
Anna-Lisa M. - Vienna, Austria
