Siena's old town is closed to unauthorised cars all day, every day

The historic centre of Siena is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) with camera gates, in force 0 to 24 on every day of the week. A licensed private-hire car is admitted: it is either on the Comune's whitelist or it registers the entry online for that day. The innermost streets, which the Comune calls Zona Y storica and which include Banchi di Sopra, Via di Città and Il Campo, take a licensed private-hire car or taxi only from 06:00 to 10:00. Give your hotel's exact address when you post the trip, so the carrier can tell you where the car will stop.

Comune di Siena, ZTL regulation of May 2026 and the NCC and taxi service page, read October 2026.

About This Transfer

Your driver meets you at arrivals at Florence Airport, the cases go in the boot once, and the car does not stop again until Siena. Florence Airport to Siena is about 78 km and about 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road: the Ponte all'Indiano viaduct, about 8 km of the A1 motorway, then the Siena link, the RA 3, for about 55 km to the Siena Nord junction.

Most of the drive is toll-free. The Siena link is one of the link roads ANAS runs without a toll, and the car drives it almost end to end. The 8 km of A1 before it are a toll motorway, so figures that circulate saying nothing is paid between Florence and Siena are wrong for a pickup at the airport. A carrier's offer should say whether the toll is included.

The last kilometre is where Siena differs from most towns. A licensed private-hire car is admitted to the ZTL and stops at your hotel to unload; it may not park. The catch is the innermost zone around Piazza del Campo, open to a licensed private-hire car or taxi only from 06:00 to 10:00. For an arrival at a hotel there outside that window, the car stops at the nearest street outside that zone and the last stretch is on foot.

The public route works for one person with a light bag: the tram to Santa Maria Novella, then a train or the fast bus. A private car suits a family, a group with cases, a late landing, or a hotel inside the old town. Florence is the right airport for Siena: Pisa Airport is 40 km further away and 38 minutes longer by road. For how the airport works and where else it serves, see our Florence Airport transfers page. If your flight lands at Pisa, the Pisa Airport transfers page covers that side.

  • ✓ A1, then the toll-free Siena link to Siena Nord
  • ✓ About 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road, around 78 km
  • ✓ A licensed car is admitted to Siena's all-day ZTL

Sights Along the Route

Your driver covers the distance while you enjoy the scenery.

Stop requests: Most carriers on this route are happy to make short stops at viewpoints or towns. Mention it when booking or ask your driver directly.
On the route, 15 km before Siena

Monteriggioni

A 13th-century Sienese outpost against Florence, with walls of about 570 metres and 14 towers, and its own junction on the Siena link. Stopping adds about 2 km and about 7 minutes of driving to the transfer. Ask for the stop and the waiting time when you post the trip, so both are in the offer.

Visit Tuscany, Monteriggioni →
A detour, about half an hour more driving

San Gimignano

Thirteen of the town's towers survive, of 65 at its height, and it has been a World Heritage Site since 1990. It is 60 km and about 1 hour from the airport, then 40 km and 47 minutes on to Siena, so going this way adds about 23 km to the day. It is a visit of hours, not a coffee stop: get it quoted as part of the trip.

Visit Tuscany, San Gimignano →
In Siena, on foot

Piazza del Campo

The shell-shaped square in nine sections is the centre of Siena's UNESCO-listed old town, and the Palio is run on it on 2 July and 16 August. Il Campo is inside Zona Y storica, so outside the 06:00 to 10:00 window no private-hire car or taxi reaches the square. The car stops as near as the rules allow and you walk in.

Route Overview

Pickup: Florence Airport (FLR)

Your driver meets you at the arrivals exit, where the tourist information desk faces you as you come out. The airport names one resident private-hire consortium and publishes no meeting point for a driver booked elsewhere, so the exact spot is confirmed with your carrier in the booking chat before you fly. The airport has no left-luggage office: whatever you land with travels with you, which is one more reason to load it once.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • The arrivals exit
  • • Tourist information desk facing arrivals
  • • Tram stop 2 minutes on foot from arrivals
  • • No left-luggage office at the airport

Drop-off: Siena, your hotel or the edge of the old town

The car takes you to the address you give. Inside the ZTL a licensed car stops to unload and leaves; it may not park. In Zona Y storica a licensed private-hire car or taxi may do so only from 06:00 to 10:00, and only for guests of accommodation or a business inside the zone. Outside the ZTL, Via Tozzi beside Piazza Gramsci is where the fast bus from Florence stops, and the railway station is on Piazzale Carlo Rosselli, below the old town.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • Hotels inside the ZTL
  • • Streets beside Zona Y storica
  • • Piazza Gramsci and Via Tozzi
  • • Siena station, Piazzale Carlo Rosselli

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

Any landing works for the car; the clock matters for the alternatives. The last direct train from Santa Maria Novella left at 21:38 on the Tuesday and the Saturday in our timetable sample and at 20:10 on the Sunday, and the last fast bus leaves Florence at 20:15 from Monday to Saturday and at 19:10 on Sundays and holidays. On one sampled Saturday, 17 October 2026, no direct train ran at all. For a hotel in Zona Y storica, a licensed private-hire car or taxi reaches the door only from 06:00 to 10:00.

Traffic Patterns

Every time on this page is a clear-road time; no authority publishes a traffic-time figure for the Siena link or for the A1 round Florence. The link is under a planned maintenance programme. ANAS's notice of 29 August 2024 said the works had been paused for that summer's exodus and were resuming, with two-way running on one carriageway between Poggibonsi Sud and Colle Val d'Elsa Nord. Ask your carrier what margin they add at your hour.

Road & Border Notes

No border. The Siena link, about 56 km long, has no toll; the A1 stretch before it does. A Florence taxi on the meter passes the toll to the passenger, and a carrier's offer should say whether it is included. In Siena the ZTL runs 0 to 24 with camera gates, in 6 sectors that each have their own way in and out.

Carrier Tip

Give the hotel's exact address when you post the trip, and say whether it is inside the ZTL. Ask the carrier to confirm that the car is on Siena's whitelist or will register the entry. If you want Monteriggioni on the way, ask for the stop and the waiting time in the same request.

When to Travel This Route

Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Low Demand

January was the quietest month at Florence Airport in 2025, with 201,419 passengers. Fog is a known risk at this airport: the operator says low visibility sends flights to Pisa or to airports in other regions. Share your flight number, so the carrier sees where the aircraft actually lands.

  • Quietest months at the airport
  • Fog diversions to Pisa are possible
  • ZTL in force as in every month

Spring (Mar-May)

High Demand

April 2025 carried 351,743 passengers through the airport, and the season stays at that level into the autumn. Book the car when you book the flight if you land at a weekend.

  • Airport traffic steps up from April
  • Monteriggioni is an easy stop on the way
  • Sunday bus and train timetables are thinner

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Peak Demand

The Palio is run on 2 July and 16 August, and each race takes four days, from 29 June to 2 July and from 13 to 16 August. Piazza del Campo is the track. If your stay covers those days, ask your hotel what changes for a car at its door, and tell the carrier.

  • Palio on 2 July and 16 August
  • Four days of events around each race
  • August 2025: 385,343 passengers at the airport

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

High Demand

September 2025 was the airport's busiest month, with 395,153 passengers, almost twice January's. Ask your carrier whether works are on the Siena link when you travel.

  • September is the busiest month at the airport
  • Ask about roadworks on the Siena link
  • Book ahead for a September weekend

Important Information

Siena's ZTL and Your Hotel

Siena's ZTL is in force 0 to 24, every day, with camera gates. A licensed private-hire car (NCC) or taxi named in a licence can be on the Comune's permanent whitelist for the whole zone. One that is not registers an occasional entry on the Comune's online service, free, for that day only, and may stop for at most 30 minutes. An NCC car may never park inside. Ask your carrier which of the two applies to the car it sends.

Zona Y Storica: 06:00 to 10:00 Only

The innermost streets of Siena, among them Banchi di Sopra, Via di Città and Il Campo, are a mainly pedestrian zone the Comune calls Zona Y storica. A licensed private-hire car or taxi may pass there only from 06:00 to 10:00, only to take guests to accommodation or a business inside the zone, and may never park. Outside 06:00 to 10:00 no licensed private-hire car or taxi reaches a door there. If your hotel is on one of those streets, ask it for the nearest point a car can stop.

If You Drive a Hire Car Instead

A hotel inside the ZTL can register its guest's own car, for 2 entries a day of 45 minutes each, by the shortest way, with the booking sheet shown on the dashboard. The car may only load and unload, and it may not cross Zona Y storica, with one exception: for a hotel inside that zone, the guest's car may load and unload in the streets next to the hotel. After that it has to leave the ZTL and be parked outside.

The Toll

The Siena link (RA 3) is a toll-free road run by ANAS. The A1 motorway, which the car uses for about 8 km to reach it from the airport, is tolled. A taxi meter adds it to the fare, so check that a carrier's offer says whether it is included.

Meeting Your Driver at Florence Airport

Your driver meets you at the arrivals exit; the tourist information desk faces arrivals and is the airport's one named landmark there. The airport publishes no meeting point for a pre-booked driver, so confirm the exact spot in the booking chat before you fly. A pre-booked transfer is not hailed from the taxi rank: the driver is there for you by name.

A Florence Taxi to Siena

Florence's fixed airport taxi fare covers the central area of Florence only. To Siena a taxi runs on the meter, and the motorway toll and the supplements are the passenger's to pay. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle before you fly.

If Your Flight Is Diverted to Pisa

It happens at this airport. The operator counts about 1,000 go-arounds and diversions in one year, and says fog sends flights to Pisa or to airports in other regions. Message your carrier in the booking chat as soon as you know: Pisa Airport to Siena is about 118 km and about 1 hour 54 minutes on a clear road.

Child Seats

Carriers provide child seats on request, but you need to book them. Put each child's age in the booking notes, because a booster and a rear-facing infant seat are different equipment. Confirm the seat is in the offer before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take from Florence Airport to Siena by car?

About 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road for about 78 km, measured from the taxi rank on the Florence Airport forecourt to Piazza Gramsci in Siena. The drive is the Ponte all'Indiano viaduct, about 8 km of the A1 motorway and then about 55 km of the Siena link, the RA 3, to the Siena Nord junction. No authority publishes a traffic time for these roads, so allow a margin at busy hours.

Is there a toll on the road from Florence Airport to Siena?

On part of it. The Siena link, the RA 3, is a toll-free road run by ANAS and makes up about 55 of the 78 km. To reach it from Florence Airport the car uses about 8 km of the A1 motorway, which is tolled. A Florence taxi adds the toll to the metered fare. With a private transfer, the carrier's offer should state whether the toll is included.

Can a private driver take me to a hotel inside Siena's ZTL?

Yes. Siena's ZTL is in force all day, every day, but licensed private-hire (NCC) cars and taxis are admitted: a car is either on the Comune di Siena's permanent whitelist or registers an occasional entry online for that day, with a stop of at most 30 minutes. The exception is Zona Y storica, the innermost streets including Banchi di Sopra, Via di Città and Il Campo, where a licensed private-hire car or taxi may pass only from 06:00 to 10:00 to reach accommodation inside the zone. Give the hotel's address when you book, so the carrier can confirm where the car will stop.

Is there a direct bus or train from Florence Airport to Siena?

No. The airport's own guide lists the T2 tram as its public link to the city and nothing towards Siena. The public route is the tram to Santa Maria Novella, €2.00 and about 20 minutes, then either a direct regional train, €10.80 and 1 hour 27 minutes to 1 hour 38 minutes, or the 131R fast bus, 1 hour 15 minutes to Via Tozzi beside Piazza Gramsci. That is at least 1 hour 35 minutes of riding before any wait. A private transfer goes from arrivals to your hotel in one vehicle, in about 1 hour 16 minutes on a clear road.

How much is a taxi from Florence Airport to Siena?

There is no fixed fare. Florence's fixed airport taxi fare covers the central area of Florence only, so a taxi to Siena runs on the meter: the Comune di Firenze sets €2.10 per km beyond Florence and its neighbouring communes, €1.20 a bag, €3.10 for a departure from the airport, and the passenger pays the motorway toll. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle before you fly, sized to your group and luggage.

Should I fly into Florence or Pisa to get to Siena?

Florence, if the flights are comparable. Siena is about 78 km and about 1 hour 16 minutes from Florence Airport on a clear road, against about 118 km and about 1 hour 54 minutes from Pisa Airport: 40 km and 38 minutes more. Pisa is the bigger airport, with almost 6 million passengers in 2025 against 3.85 million at Florence, so it may have the flight you need. A private transfer runs from either airport to your door in Siena.

Can I stop at Monteriggioni or San Gimignano on the way to Siena?

Yes. Monteriggioni has its own junction on the Siena link, 15 km before Siena, and stopping there adds about 2 km and about 7 minutes of driving to a Florence Airport to Siena transfer. San Gimignano is a detour: 60 km and about 1 hour from the airport, then 40 km and 47 minutes on to Siena, about half an hour more driving in all. Ask for the stop and the waiting time when you post the trip, so both are in the carrier's offer.

What if I land at Florence Airport late in the evening?

A pre-booked car waits for the flight. The public route does not: on the days we sampled, the last direct train from Santa Maria Novella to Siena left at 21:38 on a Tuesday and a Saturday and at 20:10 on a Sunday, and the last 131R fast bus leaves Florence at 20:15 from Monday to Saturday and at 19:10 on Sundays and holidays. Land at 20:30 on a Sunday and both have gone. A private transfer runs at the hour your flight lands.

Where does the bus from Florence stop in Siena, and where is the station?

The 131R fast bus from Florence ends at Via Tozzi, beside Piazza Gramsci, at the edge of Siena's old town. The railway station is on Piazzale Carlo Rosselli, below the old town and about 3.7 km by road from Piazza Gramsci. Neither is a hotel door: from both there is a further leg with your bags. A private transfer from Florence Airport stops at the hotel itself where the ZTL rules admit a licensed car.

Where do I meet my driver at Florence Airport?

At the arrivals exit of Florence Airport, where the tourist information desk faces arrivals. The airport publishes no meeting point for a pre-booked driver, only the desk of one resident private-hire consortium, so your carrier confirms the exact spot in the booking chat before you fly. A pre-booked driver is not found at the taxi rank.

How much does a private transfer from Florence Airport to Siena cost?

TransferBnB does not publish a fixed price for this route. You post the trip with your flight, passenger count, luggage and the hotel's address, and verified carriers send offers per vehicle that you compare before you pay. For context, a Florence taxi to Siena has no fixed fare and runs on the meter, with the toll and bags extra. The offer should state whether the A1 toll and any stop on the way are included.

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. - London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. - Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. - Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. - Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. - Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. - Vienna, Austria
