Greve's main square is closed to every vehicle on Saturdays until the market ends

Piazza Matteotti and the streets around it are a limited-traffic zone with one camera-watched gate. On Saturdays the Comune closes the area to all vehicles for the weekly market, with no exceptions: from 06:00 to 17:00 from Easter week to 31 October, and from 06:00 to 15:00 in winter. On other days a licensed private-hire car can get a free permit for the time it takes to unload your luggage. If your hotel is on or beside the square, tell the carrier when you book and ask the hotel where its guests are set down on a Saturday.

About This Transfer

Your driver meets you at arrivals on the ground floor of Florence Airport, loads the cases once, and the car leaves over the Ponte all'Indiano viaduct for the A1. Florence Airport to Greve in Chianti is about 40 km: about 8 km of the A1, a short piece of the Firenze-Siena link as far as the Impruneta junction, about 13 km on the SP3 down the Greve valley, then the last 5 km on the SR222, the Chiantigiana. On a clear road that is about 45 minutes.

There are two ways to drive it. The other one is the Chiantigiana all the way: across Florence to the SR222, then through Grassina, Strada in Chianti, Chiocchio and Greti, about 39 km with no motorway and a couple of minutes longer on a clear road. The motorway line carries a toll and the Chiantigiana does not. Both times are for a clear road, and no road authority publishes a busy-hour figure for either, so ask the carrier which line they drive and what they allow.

The end of the trip needs one question answered before you fly. Greve's centre, Piazza Matteotti and the streets off it, is a limited-traffic zone with a single gate at Piazzetta Santa Croce. A licensed private-hire car is let in on a free temporary permit for the time it takes to unload luggage, which the carrier asks the local police for in advance. On Saturdays, from 06:00 to 17:00 in summer and from 06:00 to 15:00 in winter, nobody is: the square is shut to all vehicles for the market.

Greve has no railway station. The public route is the T2 tram from the airport into Florence, €2.00 and 20 minutes, then Autolinee Toscane line 365 A from the Montelungo bus hub by Santa Maria Novella station, about an hour to Piazza Trento in Greve. Land at 11:00 on a Tuesday with a cabin bag and it works. Land at 19:30 on a Sunday with two suitcases and it does not: the last bus left the hub at 19:00, line 365 A ran six buses all day, and the tram has no luggage space.

Florence is the right airport for Greve. Pisa Airport is 93 km away and twice the drive time, and it is one of the airports Florence's flights are diverted to in fog, so keep your carrier's chat open on the day. Our Florence Airport transfers page covers the terminal, the tram and the other Tuscan runs, and the Pisa Airport transfers page covers the other airport. If Siena is the next stop after the Chianti, see Florence Airport to Siena.

Where the route ends

Piazza Matteotti, Greve

Greve's funnel-shaped square has been the valley's market place since at least 1300, and the porticoes round it stand where the market stalls once did. The statue is Giovanni da Verrazzano, the navigator, born at the Castello di Verrazzano nearby. The market still fills the square every Saturday, which is why no car is let in that day until it is over.

Comune di Greve in Chianti →
3 km above Greve

Montefioralle

A walled village just above Greve, 3 km and about 5 minutes by road from the square. Its ring of walls still stands, with the remains of towers now lived in as houses. If you are staying up here, give the carrier the address, not Greve.

6 km south on the SR222

Panzano in Chianti

The next village down the Chiantigiana, halfway between Florence and Siena, 6 km and about 10 minutes past Greve. From the airport it is 46 km and about 50 minutes on a clear road. If your booking says Greve and the address is here, post the trip with this address, because it is a longer run.

Route Overview

Pickup: Florence Airport (FLR)

Arrivals are on the ground floor of the passenger terminal, and the tourist information desk faces the arrivals exit. The airport's own guide names no meeting point for a pre-booked driver, so confirm the exact spot with your carrier in the booking chat before you fly. The taxi rank in front of the terminal is for taxis. Both car parks give the first 10 minutes free, a hold bag takes about half an hour to reach the belt, and the airport has no left-luggage office.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • Arrivals, ground floor
  • • Tourist information desk facing arrivals
  • • Car parks with the first 10 minutes free
  • • Terminal open from 04:00

Drop-off: Greve in Chianti

An address outside the centre is a door-to-door run. Inside it, Piazza Matteotti, Via Roma, Via Giuliotti, Via dell'Arco, Via Suburbana and part of Via Cesare Battisti are a limited-traffic zone entered through one gate at Piazzetta Santa Croce. Parking is banned while the zone is active. A licensed private-hire car is admitted on a free temporary permit for the time it takes to unload luggage, and a hotel inside the zone registers a guest's own car the same way. On Saturdays during the market, and on event days in the square, no permit applies.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • Your hotel, villa or winery outside the zone
  • • Piazzetta Santa Croce, the one gate to the square
  • • Piazza Matteotti, on a luggage permit
  • • Montefioralle and Panzano, on request

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

Saturday is the day to plan around. The market closes the square to every vehicle from 06:00 to 17:00 in the summer set-up and from 06:00 to 15:00 in winter, so a Saturday arrival for a hotel on the square is either a later one or a set-down outside the zone. On a summer Saturday the ordinary zone resumes from 18:00 to 24:00, when a luggage permit applies again; in winter no restriction is listed for a Saturday after 15:00. On other summer days the zone is switched on from 11:00 to 17:00 and from 18:00 to 24:00, and from 11:00 on Sundays and holidays. At the airport, September was the busiest month of 2025 and every month from April to October was busy.

Traffic Patterns

The 45 minutes is a clear-road figure for the motorway line, and the Chiantigiana line is a couple of minutes longer. The motorway line spends about 8 km on the A1 before it leaves for the Greve valley; the Chiantigiana line runs through Strada in Chianti and Grassina into Florence. No road authority publishes a rush-hour or summer time for either, so the carrier's own allowance is the figure to ask for.

Road & Border Notes

No border. The A1 is a toll motorway and the outbound line uses about 8 km of it; tariffs are revised every year, so have the toll stated in the offer. The Firenze-Siena link that follows has no toll station, and the Chiantigiana line uses no motorway at all. In Greve the centre is a limited-traffic zone with one camera-watched gate, in force on the summer timetable from Easter week to 31 October and on a winter one after that.

Carrier Tip

Give the carrier the full address and say whether it is inside Greve's limited-traffic zone, because the permit is asked for in advance with a copy of the licence and covers only the hour named in the request. Ask your hotel the same question if you are not sure. If the address is a farm or a villa outside the town, send the map pin as well. If you are landing on a Saturday, say so in the request.

Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Low Demand

January was the quietest month at Florence Airport in 2025. Greve's limited-traffic zone is on its winter timetable from 1 November: Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 20:00, and the Saturday market closure from 06:00 to 15:00. Spring (Mar-May)

Medium Demand

The summer set-up of Greve's zone starts in Easter week: the Comune's rule is the Monday before Easter, and it confirms the date in a notice beforehand, 1 April in 2026. From then the Saturday closure lengthens to 17:00. Airport traffic climbs from April. The holiday bus timetable does not run at Easter or on 1 May.

  • Summer limited-traffic hours from Easter week

Summer (Jun-Aug)

In Greve the zone is switched on from 11:00 to 17:00 and from 18:00 to 24:00 on weekdays, from 11:00 to 24:00 on Sundays and holidays, and the square is shut to all vehicles on Saturdays until 17:00, after which the ordinary zone resumes from 18:00 to 24:00 and a luggage permit applies again. Book when you book the flight, and give the carrier your flight number.

  • Saturday market closure 06:00 to 17:00
  • Busy months at the airport

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

Peak Demand

September was Florence Airport's busiest month in 2025, and it is the month Greve hosts the Expo Chianti Classico. Events in Piazza Matteotti close the square to all traffic and suspend every permit, so ask your hotel about the days you are there. The summer zone timetable ends on 31 October.

Important Information

Meeting Your Driver at Florence Airport

Arrivals are on the ground floor, and the tourist information desk faces the exit. The airport's guide names no meeting point for a pre-booked driver, so confirm the spot with your carrier in the booking chat before you fly. The taxi rank in front of the terminal is for taxis. Allow about half an hour for a hold bag to reach the belt.

Where the Car Stops in Greve

Piazza Matteotti, Via Roma, Via Giuliotti, Via dell'Arco, Via Suburbana and part of Via Cesare Battisti are a limited-traffic zone with one gate, at Piazzetta Santa Croce, watched by cameras. A taxi or licensed private-hire car can have a temporary permit for the time it takes to load or unload luggage. It is free, it is asked for in advance from the local police, and it covers only the hour named in the request. Parking inside is banned while the zone is active.

The Saturday Market

Every Saturday the Comune closes the zone to all vehicles for the weekly market, with no exceptions: from 06:00 to 17:00 in the summer set-up, which runs from Easter week to 31 October, and from 06:00 to 15:00 in winter. Events held in the square during the year close it in the same way and suspend every permit. If your hotel is inside the zone, ask it where guests are set down on those days.

Two Roads, One of Them Tolled

The quickest line from the airport on a clear road uses about 8 km of the A1, a toll motorway, then the Firenze-Siena link, which has no toll station, and the Greve valley road. The other line is the SR222 Chiantigiana through Grassina and Strada in Chianti, with no motorway, about 39 km and a couple of minutes longer on a clear road. Ask the carrier to state tolls in the offer.

A Florence Taxi to Greve

The fixed taxi fares from Florence Airport cover the central area of the city only. To Greve a Florence taxi runs on the meter at the extra-urban tariff: €2.10 per km beyond Florence's neighbouring comuni, a flag-fall of €3.80 by day, €6.10 on holidays and €7.70 at night between 22:00 and 06:00, €1.20 for each bag up to 7, and any motorway toll paid by the passenger.

Luggage on the Tram

The T2 tram carries one bag up to 10 kg and 55x40x20 cm free. A larger bag, up to 80x45x25 cm and 20 kg, needs a second ticket, anything bigger is refused, and the tram has no luggage space. A private car takes what the vehicle you booked takes, so put the number of cases in the booking notes.

If Your Flight Is Diverted to Pisa

Florence Airport's operator says fog and low visibility cancel flights or divert them to Pisa or to airports in other regions. Pisa Airport to Greve is 93 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes on a clear road, most of it on the FI-PI-LI, which is free for cars. Message your carrier in the booking chat as soon as the airline tells you, so the pickup can be re-agreed.

If Your Flight Is Delayed

Your carrier monitors the flight and moves the pickup to match. The public route does not wait: the last bus for Greve leaves the Montelungo hub in Florence at 20:15 on weekdays and Saturdays and at 19:00 on Sundays and holidays. Give the carrier your flight number and confirm what waiting time is included.

Child Seats

Carriers provide child seats on request, but you need to book them. Put each child's age in the booking notes, because a booster and a rear-facing infant seat are different equipment. Confirm the seat is in the offer before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take from Florence Airport to Greve in Chianti by car?

About 45 minutes on a clear road, for roughly 40 km from the terminal forecourt to Piazza Matteotti in Greve. That line uses about 8 km of the A1, then the Greve valley road and the last 5 km of the SR222 Chiantigiana. The other line, the Chiantigiana all the way through Grassina and Strada in Chianti, is about 39 km and a couple of minutes longer on a clear road.

How much is a taxi from Florence Airport to Greve in Chianti?

There is no fixed fare. The fixed taxi fares from Florence Airport cover the central area of Florence only, and a trip to Greve runs on the meter at the Comune di Firenze's extra-urban tariff: €2.10 per km beyond the neighbouring comuni, a flag-fall of €3.80 by day or €7.70 at night, €1.20 per bag, and motorway tolls paid by the passenger. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle before you fly, sized to your group and luggage.

Is there a bus from Florence Airport to Greve in Chianti?

Not from the airport itself. The public route is the T2 tram into Florence, €2.00 and 20 minutes, then Autolinee Toscane line 365 A from the Firenze Hub Montelungo bus station by Santa Maria Novella, about an hour to Piazza Trento in Greve. The last bus leaves the hub at 20:15 on weekdays and Saturdays and at 19:00 on Sundays and holidays, when there are six all day. A private transfer makes the journey in one vehicle from arrivals, at whatever hour the flight lands.

Is there a train station in Greve in Chianti?

No. The Comune di Greve's own directions send rail passengers to Firenze Santa Maria Novella and on by bus from outside the station. From Florence Airport that means a tram and then a bus of about an hour, or a car straight from arrivals in about 45 minutes on a clear road.

Are there tolls between Florence Airport and Greve in Chianti?

On one of the two roads. The quickest line on a clear road uses about 8 km of the A1, which is a toll motorway; the Firenze-Siena link it joins afterwards has no toll station. The SR222 Chiantigiana line through Grassina and Strada in Chianti uses no motorway and has no toll. A Florence taxi passes any toll on to the passenger, so ask a private carrier to state tolls in the offer.

Can a car drive into Piazza Matteotti in Greve in Chianti?

Outside the zone's hours, yes; inside them, with a permit; during the Saturday market, no. Piazza Matteotti and the streets around it are a limited-traffic zone with one camera-watched gate at Piazzetta Santa Croce. In summer the zone is on from 11:00 to 17:00 and from 18:00 to 24:00 on weekdays and from 11:00 to 24:00 on Sundays and holidays; in winter it is on from 10:00 to 20:00 on Sundays and holidays. In those hours a taxi or licensed private-hire car can get a free temporary permit for the time it takes to unload luggage, and a hotel inside the zone can register a guest's car the same way. On Saturdays the area is closed to all vehicles, with no exceptions, from 06:00 to 17:00 in summer and from 06:00 to 15:00 in winter.

Is it better to fly into Florence or Pisa for Greve in Chianti?

Florence. Florence Airport is about 40 km and 45 minutes from Greve on a clear road; Pisa Airport is 93 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes, twice the drive time. Pisa is the larger airport, so it can still win on flights, and the road from it, the FI-PI-LI, is free for cars. A private transfer can be quoted from either.

What happens to my transfer if my Florence flight is diverted to Pisa?

Florence Airport's operator says fog and low visibility cancel flights or divert them to Pisa or to airports in other regions. If the airline tells you the flight is going to Pisa, message your carrier in the booking chat straight away. Pisa Airport to Greve is 93 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes on a clear road, so it is a different trip from the one quoted and the carrier has to agree it.

Where do I meet my driver at Florence Airport?

At arrivals, on the ground floor of the passenger terminal, at the spot your carrier confirms in the booking chat. The airport's own guide names no meeting point for pre-booked drivers; its one fixed landmark by the exit is the tourist information desk, which faces arrivals. The rank in front of the terminal is for taxis.

How much does a private transfer from Florence Airport to Greve in Chianti cost?

TransferBnB does not publish a fixed price for this route. You post the trip with your flight, passenger count, luggage and the exact address in or near Greve, and verified carriers send offers per vehicle that you compare before you pay. The offer should state whether motorway tolls are included.

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. - London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. - Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. - Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. - Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. - Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. - Vienna, Austria
