About This Transfer

The car collects you at your hotel door in St Andrews, the golf bags go into the back once, and the driver heads west out of town through Fife: the A92 through the middle of the county, or the A91 through Cupar to the M90. Then the Queensferry Crossing over the Firth of Forth, the M9 spur and the airport. The run is about 85 km and takes about 1h 15min in free-flowing traffic.

That is about 52 miles by road, not the 35 miles that circulates; 35 miles is roughly the straight line across the water. Work back from your flight: the drive, plus your airline's check-in deadline, plus slack for the commuter peak around the Forth and for event weeks in St Andrews.

St Andrews has no railway station. By rail the trip to the airport is a bus to Leuchars, a train to Edinburgh Gateway and the tram: two changes and about 1h 40min to 2h 10min, and the first chain does not reach the airport before 07:34 on a weekday. The direct 787 coach takes 91 to 105 minutes this way, about two hours apart. The car leaves at the hour your flight needs.

For every run to and from the terminal, see our Edinburgh Airport transfers page, and our airport transfers page for how pickup times are set against a departure.

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

An early flight is where the car earns its price. The 787 coach runs through the night, but it reaches the airport at fixed times, about two hours apart in the day and up to two and a half hours apart overnight (00:46, 02:20, 04:51), so the coach that fits a flight can still mean hours in the terminal. The first bus, train and tram chain arrives at 07:34 on a weekday. Departure pressure follows the university calendar and the golf: the winter graduation in late November (the week of 30 November 2026, then 29 November 2027), the Christmas vacation from late December (22 December 2026; 21 December 2027), the summer graduation at the end of June (the week of 28 June 2027) and The Open, 11 to 18 July 2027.

Traffic Patterns

Out of St Andrews the car takes the A92 through central Fife to the M90, or the A91 through Cupar to the M90; the two are about the same distance. The M90 carries it over the Queensferry Crossing, where variable mandatory speed limits smooth congestion, and the M9 spur brings it to the airport.

Road & Border Notes

The Queensferry Crossing is the motorway bridge; the older Forth Road Bridge beside it is open to buses, taxis and private hire vehicles. When ice may fall from the Queensferry Crossing's cables, barriers close it and divert traffic over the Forth Road Bridge, as happened on the morning of 23 November 2024. High winds restrict high-sided vehicles first: the Forth Road Bridge closes to them in gusts over 50 mph, while the Queensferry Crossing stays open to them in winds up to 70 mph. In Storm Éowyn in January 2025, gusts over 80 mph were expected to close it to high-sided vehicles, motorcycles and cars with trailers or roof boxes.

Carrier Tip

Give the flight time, not only the pickup time, and let the carrier set the pickup from it. Declare golf bags and travel cases when you book. In graduation weeks and during The Open, book early and add slack.

Important Information

Setting the pickup time

The drive is about 1h 15min in free-flowing traffic. Add your airline's check-in deadline and slack for the Forth crossing, and more in graduation weeks or during The Open. Give the carrier the flight time and let it set the pickup.

Early flights

The 787 coach runs through the night, but it reaches the airport at fixed times up to two and a half hours apart overnight (00:46, 02:20, 04:51), so an early flight can mean hours waiting in the terminal. The first bus, train and tram chain arrives at 07:34 on a weekday (08:16 on a Saturday). A private transfer leaves when your flight needs it to.

Golf bags and luggage

Declare golf bags and hard travel cases when you book. Two golfers with clubs and cases may need an estate rather than a saloon, and a four with clubs needs a minivan.

Child seats

Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, because the ages decide the seat type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get from St Andrews to Edinburgh Airport?

About 1 hour 15 minutes by car in free-flowing traffic, for about 85 km (about 52 miles) through Fife and over the Queensferry Crossing. The 787 coach takes 91 to 105 minutes, and bus, train and tram take about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes with two changes. A private transfer goes door to terminal with no change.

How much is a private transfer from St Andrews to Edinburgh Airport?

On TransferBnB a private transfer starts from around €165 per vehicle for a saloon and €235 for a minivan, one way. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so six in a minivan pay about €39 each. Estate cars and minibuses are quoted on request.

How early should I leave St Andrews for a flight from Edinburgh Airport?

Allow the drive, about 1 hour 15 minutes in free-flowing traffic, plus your airline's check-in deadline, plus slack for the commuter peak around the Forth crossing. Add more in the university's graduation weeks and during The Open, when the town is full.

Is there an early-morning bus from St Andrews to Edinburgh Airport?

Yes. The 787 coach runs through the night: it leaves St Andrews Bus Station at 23:15, 00:45 and 03:20 every day and reaches Edinburgh Airport at 00:46, 02:20 and 04:51, so an early flight can mean hours waiting in the terminal. By bus, train and tram the first chain reaches the airport at 07:34 on a weekday and 08:16 on a Saturday. A private transfer collects you from your door at whatever time your flight needs.

Is there a train from St Andrews to Edinburgh Airport?

No. St Andrews has no railway station; you take a bus to Leuchars, about six miles away, a train to Edinburgh Gateway and the tram to the airport, two changes and about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. A private transfer takes about 1 hour 15 minutes from your door.

Does the Queensferry Crossing close?

In March 2022 the bridge operator reported that since opening in 2017 it had never closed to cars because of high winds, thanks to 3.3 m wind shielding. It does close when ice may fall from its cables, as on 23 November 2024, and traffic is then diverted over the Forth Road Bridge, which private hire vehicles may use. A private transfer simply takes the open bridge.

Why Book This Route?

  • • About 85 km and 1h 15min from your door to the terminal, against two changes by bus, train and tram
  • • Leaves at the hour your flight needs, not at a coach time that can leave you hours in the terminal
  • • Golf bags and travel cases loaded at your hotel and sized into the quote
  • • Collects from the Old Course Hotel, the old town or Fairmont St Andrews
  • • Quoted per vehicle, not per head: six in a minivan pay about €39 each

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. - London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. - Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. - Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. - Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. - Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. - Vienna, Austria
