Why the pickup is agreed in advance

One operator runs the taxi rank, and every other driver collects from a car park that charges by the minute or sits a 10-minute walk away. So the meeting point is not improvised at the kerb. Your carrier tells you in the booking chat where the driver meets you and where the car is waiting.

Pickup Time and Flight Monitoring

You choose the pickup time, so pick the moment you expect to walk out with your bags. International arrivals clear passport control run by UK Border Force, and the paid fastTrack lane was withdrawn in July 2024; domestic flights, from London for example, go straight to reclaim. Your carrier follows your flight. Running much later? Call or message your carrier to agree a new time.

About Edinburgh Airport

Ingliston, the kerb, the tram, and the bridges north

Your driver meets you after reclaim, and within minutes the car is on the A8. Edinburgh Airport, IATA code EDI, is Scotland's busiest, with about 17 million passengers in 2025, up 7.5% on the year before. It has one terminal and one runway, and it stays open 24 hours a day.

Ingliston, not the city

The airport is about 9 km west of the centre.

By road Waverley is about 15 km and 30 minutes in free flow, along the A8. The M8 to Glasgow and the M9 toward Stirling are just off the airport, and the M90 north is reached over the Queensferry Crossing without driving through Edinburgh at all. For anyone heading to Fife or Perthshire, that western position is the quiet advantage.

Airlink 100 normally ends at Waverley Bridge. From 9 November 2026 to 7 January 2027 it ends at George Street East End, opposite The Dome, while the Christmas markets are up.

The kerb costs money

Nobody waits outside the doors for free.

The charged Pickup & Dropoff zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey is £8.50 for ten minutes and £1 a minute after, so a driver who waits half an hour for a slow reclaim runs up £28.50. 1 Hour Parking in Terminal Parking is cheaper past ten minutes, and the free zone is a 10-minute walk away in Long Stay, with no shuttle. The rank belongs to one operator. That is why a carrier on TransferBnB agrees the meeting point with you before you land, rather than at the kerb.

The tram, and where it stops

The tram is the right buy for some travelers.

It leaves from right outside the terminal every 7 minutes by day, reaches St Andrew Square in 35 minutes and costs £7.90, and for one traveler with a backpack and a hotel on Princes Street, we are not going to pretend anything beats it. The catch is the clock and the line. The last tram leaves the airport at 22:52, every day of the week, and it stops only where the rails go.

Four tickets are £31.60 before anyone has wheeled a case to the hotel.

Read the last column before you book the flight. St Andrews is about 50 km nearer from Edinburgh; Fort William is about 45 km nearer from Glasgow, and so is Glasgow itself.

North over the Forth

The fastest road into Fife and Perthshire starts on one bridge.

The Queensferry Crossing carries the M90 over the Forth, a motorway bridge opened in 2017. From there the road forks to St Andrews across Fife, about 85 km and 1h 15 from the terminal, and up the M90 for Gleneagles, about 69 km and 1h 05, and for Perth and the A9 to Pitlochry and Inverness. The old Forth Road Bridge beside it is kept for buses, taxis, cyclists and walkers. In high winds high-sided vehicles can be diverted, which is worth knowing for a minibus party.

Travel light to a hotel by a station in Fife or Perth, and the tram to Edinburgh Gateway connects with trains north.

Land at 22:30 with four golf bags bound for St Andrews, and the car booked before you fly is the answer.

West to Glasgow

The M8 runs from the airport to the city.

Glasgow city centre is about 65 km and 55 minutes by road in free flow, against 15 km from Glasgow Airport, so a Glasgow trip often starts at Glasgow Airport. When the flight lands in Edinburgh instead, the car takes the whole party from the terminal to a Glasgow address on the M8, with no change at a station.

Cruise passengers

Edinburgh's cruise calls land in three places.

Ships berth at Leith's cruise terminal in the dock, about 18 km and 35 minutes from the airport. Ships at anchor in the Forth send their tenders into Newhaven Harbour, about 17 km and 30 minutes, and ships anchored off South Queensferry land their passengers there, about 15 km and 25 minutes. The tram reaches Ocean Terminal and Newhaven too; a car takes the cases from the terminal to the pier.

How Much Does an Edinburgh Airport Transfer Cost?

Carriers quote per vehicle, for your flight, your party and your luggage.

It depends on four things, and every carrier on TransferBnB prices them into one quote per vehicle before you fly:

  • The vehicle. A sedan for two, an MPV or a minivan for a family or a four-ball, so nobody is split across two cars.
  • The party and the bags. Golf bags for St Andrews or Gleneagles, or a cruise party's cases, need a bigger boot, so put them in the request.
  • The distance. From the 15 km run to Waverley to the 251 km drive to Inverness; the route cards above carry each drive.
  • The waiting. A late landing or a long queue at passport control, and the kerb charge while the driver waits, are part of what the carrier quotes for.

Where published fares back a figure, the route card shows it as a from-price per vehicle; every other run is quoted by the carriers on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does my transfer driver meet me at Edinburgh Airport?
After passport control and baggage reclaim, in the one terminal at Edinburgh Airport; your carrier confirms the exact spot and where the car waits in the booking chat. The airport's taxi rank in the East Terminus is run by a single official operator, so other drivers collect from the charged Pickup & Dropoff zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, from 1 Hour Parking in Terminal Parking, or from the free zone in the Long Stay car park. Share your flight number when you book and set the pickup time for when you expect to walk out with your bags.
How much does it cost to pick someone up at Edinburgh Airport?
The charged Pickup & Dropoff zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey costs £8.50 for up to 10 minutes and £1 a minute after that, card only, so a 30-minute wait comes to £28.50 (about €34). Past ten minutes, 1 Hour Parking in Terminal Parking is cheaper: £10 up to 15 minutes, £19 to 30 minutes, £26 to an hour. The free option is 30 minutes in the Long Stay car park, a 10-minute walk from the terminal with no shuttle bus. A private transfer carrier prices its own waiting into the quote.
How do I get from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre in 2026?
Three ways from outside the terminal. The tram runs to St Andrew Square in 35 minutes for £7.90 single, every 7 minutes by day and every 10 early and late, last departure 22:52. Airlink 100 runs 24 hours via Haymarket to Waverley Bridge (George Street East End until 7 January 2027) for £6.00 single, up to every 10 minutes by day and every 20 overnight. Taxis wait in the East Terminus across the plaza. A private transfer is about 15 km and 30 minutes to Waverley in free flow, and it is the only one of them that ends at your hotel door with the whole party in one vehicle.
What time is the last tram from Edinburgh Airport?
22:52, on weekdays and at weekends; the first leaves the airport at 06:30. The tram reaches St Andrew Square in 35 minutes and needs an Airport ticket (£7.90 single), because the city-zone tickets do not cover the airport. Land late with bags in reclaim and you can miss it; Airlink 100 runs through the night, and a private transfer waits for your flight whatever time it lands.
Is there a train station at Edinburgh Airport?
No. Edinburgh Airport has no railway station of its own. The tram from outside the terminal reaches Edinburgh Gateway in 7 minutes, where ScotRail trains run to Fife, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness, and Edinburgh Park Station in 13 minutes, for Glasgow, Stirling and Dunblane. That is a tram, a change and a train with your luggage; a private transfer drives from the airport to the door in one leg.
Where is the taxi rank at Edinburgh Airport?
In the East Terminus, just across the plaza from the main terminal: exit through the plaza, where the large Edinburgh sign stands, and follow the signs for taxi. The rank needs a booking, made online or at the rank. Fares inside the city are set by the City of Edinburgh Council, and outside the council area you are quoted the exact fare. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle before you fly.
Should I fly into Edinburgh or Glasgow for St Andrews, Gleneagles or the Highlands?
Edinburgh for St Andrews, Gleneagles, Perth, Dundee, Stirling, Pitlochry and Inverness; Glasgow for Glasgow itself, Fort William and Oban. By road St Andrews is 85 km from Edinburgh Airport and 137 km from Glasgow Airport, Gleneagles 69 km against 89 km, and Inverness 251 km against 290 km. Fort William is the reverse, 206 km from Edinburgh and 159 km from Glasgow. A private transfer from Edinburgh Airport heads north over the Queensferry Crossing without entering the city.
How do I get from Edinburgh Airport to a cruise ship at Leith, Newhaven or South Queensferry?
By road it is about 15 km and 25 minutes to South Queensferry, where ships anchored in the Forth land their tenders, about 17 km and 30 minutes to Newhaven Harbour, and about 18 km and 35 minutes to Leith, in free flow. Leith has a cruise terminal in the dock, and ships at anchor in the Forth also tender into Newhaven Harbour. The tram also runs from the airport to Ocean Terminal and Newhaven. A private transfer takes the party and its cases from the terminal to the pier or the dock gate in one vehicle.
How far is St Andrews from Edinburgh Airport?
About 85 km and 1h 15 by car in free flow, north over the Queensferry Crossing on the M90 and then across Fife. The crossing is part of the M90 motorway. There is no direct train: rail from the airport means the tram to Edinburgh Gateway, a ScotRail train to Leuchars and a bus, two changes. A private transfer goes from the terminal to your hotel in St Andrews in one vehicle, with the golf bags in the car.
Do US travelers need an ETA to fly into Edinburgh in 2026?
Usually yes. The UK government says visitors from the USA usually need an Electronic Travel Authorisation rather than a visa; it costs £20 (about €24), and every traveler needs one, including babies and children. International arrivals at Edinburgh clear passport control run by UK Border Force, and the paid fastTrack lane through it was withdrawn in July 2024. Set your transfer pickup time with that queue in mind; your carrier follows the flight.

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. - London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. - Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. - Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. - Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. - Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. - Vienna, Austria
