About This Transfer

Your driver meets you at Edinburgh Airport, the cases and the golf bags go into the back once, and the car heads west for the M9 spur and north onto the M90. A few minutes later you are on the Queensferry Crossing, high over the Firth of Forth, and then it is Fife: the A92 through the middle of the county, or the M90 and the A91 through Cupar. The run is about 85 km and takes about 1h 15min in free-flowing traffic.

That is about 52 miles by road (the university rounds it to around 50), not the 35 miles that circulates; 35 miles is roughly the straight line across the water. Give the full address. The Old Course Hotel is about 1 km west of the town centre and Fairmont St Andrews about 4.5 km south-east on the coast road, and the car goes to the door of whichever you booked.

St Andrews has no railway station. The nearest is Leuchars, about six miles away, so by rail the trip is a tram to Edinburgh Gateway, a train to Leuchars and a bus into town: two changes and about 1h 40min to 2h 15min. A direct airport coach, the 787, also runs, about two hours apart. The car leaves when you land and stops at your own door.

For every run from the terminal, see our Edinburgh Airport transfers page. Our airport transfers page explains how meet and greet and flight tracking work, which matters when a transatlantic flight lands late and the golf starts the next morning.

Queensferry Crossing

The 2.7 km cable-stayed bridge that carries the M90 over the Firth of Forth, open since 30 August 2017. Its 3.3 m wind shielding keeps it open in winds that close the older Forth Road Bridge beside it to high-sided vehicles.

Route Overview

Pickup: Edinburgh Airport (EDI)

Pre-booked cars that are not the rank taxi use the airport's pickup and drop-off zones: the charged zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, or the free zone in the Long Stay car park, about a ten-minute walk from the terminal. Your carrier confirms the meeting point, and where the car waits, in the booking chat.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • Meet in arrivals, name board ready
  • • Flight monitoring, so a late landing does not lose you the car
  • • Golf bags and hard travel cases declared at booking
  • • Flight number given at booking for tracking

Drop-off: St Andrews, Fife

A transfer drives to any St Andrews address: the Old Course Hotel beside the links, hotels and guesthouses in the old town, university halls, or Fairmont St Andrews on the coast road south of town. Give the full address, not just St Andrews.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • Old Course Hotel and the hotels by the links
  • • Old-town hotels, guesthouses and rentals
  • • University halls and residences
  • • Fairmont St Andrews and the coast road

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

The run north over the Forth is quickest outside the city's commuter peaks. The town itself fills on three kinds of date: the university's graduations in late November (the week of 30 November 2026, then 29 November 2027) and at the end of June (the week of 28 June 2027), its term starts (teaching resumes on 25 January 2027; orientation week begins on 6 September 2027), and The Open, from 11 to 18 July 2027, when 290,000 fans came for the last St Andrews Open in 2022.

Traffic Patterns

From the airport the car takes the A8 and the M9 spur to the M90, crosses the Forth on the Queensferry Crossing, and leaves the motorway for the A92 through central Fife, or carries on up the M90 for the A91 through Cupar. The two ways in are about the same distance. The crossing runs variable mandatory speed limits to smooth congestion.

Road & Border Notes

The Queensferry Crossing is the motorway bridge; the older Forth Road Bridge beside it is open to buses, taxis and private hire vehicles, so a licensed private-hire car can still cross when the motorway bridge is shut. When ice may fall from the cables, barriers close the Queensferry Crossing and divert traffic over the Forth Road Bridge, as happened on the morning of 23 November 2024. High winds restrict high-sided vehicles first: the Forth Road Bridge closes to them in gusts over 50 mph, while the Queensferry Crossing stays open to them in winds up to 70 mph. In Storm Éowyn in January 2025, gusts over 80 mph were expected to close it to high-sided vehicles, motorcycles and cars with trailers or roof boxes.

Carrier Tip

Declare the number of golf bags and any hard travel cases when you book, because they decide the vehicle more than the passengers do. Give the hotel by name: the Old Course Hotel, the old town and Fairmont are different drops. If your flight is late, the car waits for it, with no two-hour coach gap to sit out.

Important Information

Meeting your driver at Edinburgh Airport

Pre-booked cars use the airport's charged pickup zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, or the free zone in the Long Stay car park. Your carrier confirms the meeting point and where the car waits in the booking chat. Give the flight number so it can track the landing.

Landing late

Your carrier tracks the flight, so a late landing moves the pickup rather than losing it. By rail, the last tram, train and bus chain that reaches St Andrews the same night leaves the airport at about 21:30 to 22:00. The 787 coach runs later, at 23:05 and 01:20, but its coaches run up to 2h 20min apart in the evening.

Golf bags and luggage

Declare golf bags and hard travel cases when you book. The vehicle is chosen for the bags as much as for the seats, so two golfers with clubs and cases may need an estate rather than a saloon, and a four with clubs needs a minivan.

Event weeks

The town fills during the university's graduation weeks, in late November (30 November 2026, then 29 November 2027) and at the end of June (28 June 2027), and during The Open, 11 to 18 July 2027. Book early for those dates and give the hotel by name.

Child seats

Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews?

About 1 hour 15 minutes in free-flowing traffic, for about 85 km (about 52 miles) by road: the M9 spur, the M90 over the Queensferry Crossing, then the A92 or the A91 through Fife. Allow more at commuter peaks and during event weeks such as The Open.

How much does a private transfer from Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews cost?

On TransferBnB a private transfer starts from around €165 per vehicle for a saloon and €235 for a minivan, one way. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so three people in a saloon pay about €55 each. Estate cars and minibuses are quoted on request, and verified carriers send quotes for your date.

Is there a train from Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews?

No. St Andrews has no railway station; the nearest is Leuchars, about six miles away. By rail you take the tram to Edinburgh Gateway, a train to Leuchars and a bus into St Andrews, two changes and about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. A private transfer takes about 1 hour 15 minutes with no change.

Is there a direct bus from Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews?

Yes. The 787 coach runs from Stop H at Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews Bus Station, with a stop at the Old Course Hotel, in about 1 hour 30 minutes, up to 1 hour 42 minutes on the weekday 16:45. It runs up to every two hours, and late departures leave the airport at 23:05 and 01:20. A private transfer leaves when you land and drops at your own door.

What is the best way to get from Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews with golf clubs?

A private transfer, booked for the number of golf bags as well as the number of people. Public transport means carrying the clubs onto a tram, a train and a bus, or to a coach that stops only at the bus station and the Old Course Hotel. The car loads them once at the airport and unloads them at your hotel door.

Does the Queensferry Crossing close?

In March 2022 the bridge operator reported that since opening in 2017 it had never closed to cars because of high winds, thanks to 3.3 m wind shielding. It does close when ice may fall from its cables, as on 23 November 2024, and traffic is then diverted over the Forth Road Bridge, which private hire vehicles may use. A private transfer simply takes the open bridge.

Which airport is closest to St Andrews?

Dundee Airport is closer, around 15 miles away, but only a small number of airlines fly there. Edinburgh Airport, around 50 miles away, is the usual airport for St Andrews, and the transfer takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.

When is The Open at St Andrews in 2027?

The 155th Open is played on the Old Course from 11 to 18 July 2027, its 31st Open. The last St Andrews Open, in 2022, drew 290,000 fans, so book any transfer for that week early.

Why Book This Route?

  • • About 85 km and 1h 15min from the airport to your door, against two changes by tram, train and bus
  • • Waits for a late or delayed transatlantic flight, so there is no two-hour coach gap to sit out
  • • Golf bags and travel cases loaded once and sized into the quote
  • • Drops at the Old Course Hotel, the old town or Fairmont St Andrews, not a bus stop
  • • Quoted per vehicle, not per head: three in a saloon pay about €55 each

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. - London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. - Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. - Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. - Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. - Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. - Vienna, Austria
