About This Transfer

Your driver collects you at the hotel or guesthouse door in Zakopane, the skis and cases go into the back once, and the car heads north out of town on the DK47. Past Nowy Targ the road becomes a dual carriageway, then the S7 carries you through the Luboń Mały tunnel and Myślenice to Kraków, where the A4 bypass takes you west to Balice and the airport. The whole run is about 112 km and takes about 1h 40min in free-flowing traffic.

Plan the day backwards from the flight. Kraków Airport advises arriving about 120 minutes before departure, so leave Zakopane at least 3h 40min before the flight. Leave more at weekends or in the Polish winter school holidays: the road authority counts more traffic on the Zakopianka at weekends than on weekdays.

The train does not help an early flight. There is no direct train from Zakopane to the airport; every rail trip changes at Kraków Główny, and on the current timetable the first train of the day reaches the airport at 08:53.

The same drive in the other direction, and every other run from the terminal, is on our Kraków Airport transfers page. Our ski resort transfers page explains what skis, boards and group size do to a quote.

Kasprowy Wierch

One last morning up the mountain before the flight: the cable car climbs to 1,987 m in about 15 minutes. Kuźnice is closed to private cars, so arrange the pickup at your hotel, not at the cable car.

The funicular climbs from Zakopane to the top of Gubałówka, 1,123 m, across the valley from the Tatras. It is the short outing that fits a departure day.

The Luboń Mały tunnel

Poland's longest road tunnel outside a city, over 2 km, on the S7 between Rabka and Myślenice. It has section speed control, and it cut about 25 minutes off the trip when it opened.

Route Overview

Pickup: Zakopane, Podhale, Małopolska

The carrier collects you at your own door: hotels, guesthouses and apartments in town and on the hillsides. Kuźnice is closed to private cars, so a pickup straight after a morning on Kasprowy Wierch is arranged in town, not at the cable car.

Popular Pickup Points:

• Hotels, guesthouses and apartments in Zakopane
• Near the Jana Pawła II roundabout, after Kuźnice
• Near the Gubałówka funicular
• Zakopane railway station

Drop-off: Kraków Airport (KRK)

The drop is at the terminal. Check-in normally opens up to two hours before the flight and closes about 40 minutes before it; gate numbers appear 60 minutes before a Schengen flight and 180 minutes before a non-Schengen one.

Popular Drop-off Points:

• Drop at the terminal
• Check-in opens up to two hours before
• Check-in closes about 40 minutes before
• Airport train station next to the terminal

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

🕐

Best Travel Times

Weekday mornings run cleanest northbound. Weekends are busier than weekdays, and the Polish school winter holidays fill the road from 18 January to 28 February 2027. The World Cup weekend in Zakopane, 16 and 17 January 2027, is a weekend too.

🚦

Traffic Patterns

In season the slow part is the start. Between Szaflary and Nowy Targ the DK47 runs partly through built-up areas, and the road authority itself says jams form there in the tourist season. From Nowy Targ it is dual carriageway, then the S7 and the A4 bypass to Balice. The Zakopianka carries more traffic at weekends than on weekdays: on a summer Friday to Sunday almost 29,000 vehicles a day pass the tunnel.

🛣️

Road & Border Notes

The drive stays in Poland and has no toll: the tolled A4 stretch runs west of Balice, beyond the airport, and expressways are free for cars. Poland has no legal winter-tyre requirement; winter or all-season tyres are only recommended, so ask the carrier to confirm winter tyres when you book.

💡

Carrier Tip

Book the pickup from the flight time, not from a guess at the drive: at least 3h 40min before departure, more at a weekend or in the ferie. Declare skis, boards and boot bags, because they decide the vehicle. For a flight before about 11:00, no train gets you there the 120 minutes ahead that the airport advises, and the car does not depend on one.

Important Information

When to leave Zakopane
Kraków Airport advises arriving about 120 minutes before departure, and check-in normally closes about 40 minutes before it. With a 1h 40min drive, leave Zakopane at least 3h 40min before the flight, and more at weekends or in the Polish winter school holidays.
Early flights
On the current timetable, to 12 December 2026, the first train of the day leaves Zakopane at 04:38 and reaches the airport at 08:53, after a change at Kraków Główny. No train gets you to the terminal the 120 minutes ahead that the airport advises for a flight leaving before 10:53. A pre-booked car leaves when you need it to.
Pickup after Kasprowy Wierch
Kuźnice, the cable car station, is closed to private cars. If you ski on departure day, arrange the pickup at your hotel or in town, and remember that the PKL gives about 40 minutes for the walk between the Jana Pawła II roundabout and Kuźnice. Only scheduled buses and taxis may drive up.
Winter tyres and tolls
Poland has no legal winter-tyre requirement; winter or all-season tyres are recommended. There is no toll on this drive: the tolled A4 runs west of the airport, and expressways are free for cars.
Skis, boards and luggage
Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases.
Child seats
Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I leave Zakopane for a flight from Krakow Airport?
At least 3 hours 40 minutes before the flight: the drive is about 1h 40min in free-flowing traffic, and Kraków Airport advises arriving about 120 minutes before departure. Leave more time at weekends or in the Polish winter school holidays, when the Zakopianka carries more traffic.
How long is the drive from Zakopane to Krakow Airport?
About 1 hour 40 minutes in free-flowing traffic, for about 112 km: the DK47 to Nowy Targ, the S7 through the Luboń Mały tunnel and Myślenice, then the A4 bypass west to Balice. Weekends and the winter school holidays are slower.
How do I get from Zakopane to Krakow Airport by train?
Take a train to Kraków Główny and change there for the airport train, which takes 17 minutes and costs PLN 20. On the current timetable, valid to 12 December 2026, the whole trip takes 2h23 to 4h15. The first train leaves Zakopane at 04:38 and reaches the airport at 08:53, and the last same-day arrival is 22:53. A private transfer takes about 1h 40min with no change.
Can I catch an early morning flight from Krakow Airport by train from Zakopane?
Not one leaving before about 11:00. The first train of the day reaches the airport at 08:53, which is the airport's advised 120 minutes before a 10:53 departure; an earlier flight leaves you short of that margin, though check-in itself closes about 40 minutes before departure. A pre-booked private transfer leaves Zakopane whenever the flight needs it.
How much does a private transfer from Zakopane to Krakow Airport cost?
On TransferBnB a private transfer starts from around €145 per vehicle for a saloon, €205 for a minivan and €275 for a minibus, one way. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so three people in a saloon pay under €50 each. There is no toll on the route.
Is there a toll on the road from Zakopane to Krakow Airport?
No. The route is the DK47, the S7 expressway and the free A4 bypass round Kraków; the only tolled A4 stretch runs west of Balice toward Katowice, beyond the airport. Polish expressways are free for cars.

What our customers say

Thomas B. — London, UK

Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.

Marta R. — Munich, Germany

Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.

Olivier D. — Lyon, France

Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.

Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland

Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.

Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.

Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria

I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
