Bucharest to Bran Castle is about 187 km by road from the city centre, around 2 hours 55 minutes by car or private transfer with no traffic, and 157 km from Bucharest Airport. No train reaches Bran. The usual public route is an InterCity or InterRegio train to Brașov, 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 41 minutes for RON 75 to 85, then a bus from Brașov to the castle gate.

This guide covers every way to make the trip from Bucharest or straight from Henri Coandă International Airport: the train, the Brașov bus, the DN1 drive through the Prahova Valley and a private transfer, with real departure times, what each costs, and whether to do it in one day or stay the night in Brașov. Every figure was checked on 1 November 2026.

What is the best way to get from Bucharest to Bran Castle and Brașov?

A private transfer, if you value the day more than the fare.

It is the only booked, door-to-door option from a Bucharest hotel or the airport arrivals hall to the castle gate, in about 2 hours 55 minutes on a clear road, then on to Brașov for the night or back to Bucharest when you choose. The train is the cheaper way to reach Brașov and a genuinely good one, but it stops 31 km short of Bran, and the bus that covers the gap runs to its own timetable.

Which one fits depends on who is travelling and where the trip starts:

  • Landing at Bucharest Airport with luggage? Go straight from the terminal. The airport sits north of the city on the right side for the mountains, and a car from arrivals avoids the train into Gara de Nord and back out again.
  • A couple with a day bag, staying in central Bucharest? Take the train to Brașov and the bus to Bran. It works, and the timings below show how.
  • A family or a group of four or more? One vehicle carries everyone and the luggage, and nobody changes at a bus stop with children.
  • Want Bran, Brașov and Sinaia in one go? Only a car or a transfer puts all three in one day without a timetable deciding the order.

Is there a train from Bucharest to Bran Castle?

No. There is no railway station in Bran.

The train takes you from București Nord, also called Gara de Nord, to Brașov, and the last 31 km to the castle are by road. Bran Castle's own visitor page says the same: the train goes only as far as Brașov, then you continue by bus or taxi.

The Bucharest to Brașov line itself is well served. CFR Călători InterCity trains take about 2 hours 15 minutes, InterRegio trains 2 hours 26 minutes to 2 hours 41 minutes, and slow Regio trains 3 hours 19 minutes to 4 hours 9 minutes, according to the CFR Călători timetable valid to 12 December 2026. The InterCity departures from București Nord are IC 535 at 07:18, IC 531 at 12:21 and IC 536 at 19:47. Four other companies run the same line with their own tickets, and a CFR ticket is not valid on their trains.

The fare is where many guides are out of date. Figures of 35 to 50 RON circulate widely; the 2026 CFR second-class fare from București Nord is RON 68.50 on InterRegio and RON 78.50 on InterCity, and the online price adds a RON 6.50 seat reservation, so RON 75 and RON 85, about €14 and €16. Bought on board, the same seats cost RON 111.50 and RON 128.50.

Buy before you board.

The train is scenic in the right seat. North of Ploiești the line climbs the Prahova Valley through Sinaia, Bușteni and Predeal, where InterRegio trains stop and InterCity trains run through without stopping at Sinaia.

How do you get from Brașov to Bran Castle by bus?

Take the bus from the stop beside Brașov railway station.

Most guides send you across town to Autogara 2, and on weekdays that is where most departures leave. The Bran bus also runs hourly from the railway station stop, known as Autogara 1, at a quarter to the hour, and calls at Autogara 2 fifteen minutes later on its way out of town. On the timetable published for November 2026, the 06:45 from the station reaches Bran Centru, by the castle, at 07:54: 1 hour 9 minutes, 15 lei, every day of the week. Bran Castle's own page gives the bus as about 50 minutes, every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly at weekends, and about 13 lei; its 50 minutes is close to the 54-minute run from Autogara 2.

If you arrive by train, the :45 from the station stop saves the trip to Autogara 2.

Coming back, buses leave Bran Centru at :38 past the hour until 19:38 and take about 37 minutes. Some end at the railway station and some at Autogara 2, so check the sign before you board if you have a train to catch.

A taxi or ride-hailing car from Brașov to Bran costs about 150 lei, roughly €28, by the castle's estimate, and takes about 35 minutes for the 31 km on the DN73 through Râșnov.

Can you drive from Bucharest to Bran Castle?

Yes, but only the first stretch is motorway.

The A3 runs from Bucharest to Ploiești. North of Ploiești the motorway has not been built: the Ploiești to Comarnic section is still at pre-feasibility stage, and the only A3 piece in the mountains is 6.3 km between Râșnov and Cristian near Brașov, open since December 2020. Everything in between is the DN1, a two-lane national road through Comarnic, Sinaia, Bușteni and Predeal, the resort towns of the Prahova Valley.

On a weekday morning that road is fine. On a holiday weekend it is the single road for most of Bucharest heading to the mountains: in January 2018 Romanian police reported queues from the Brașov county line down to Bușteni with traffic moving at 20 to 30 km/h through the towns. Travel guides updated in 2026 warn that summer Fridays and Sunday evenings are slowest and that a crowded day can stretch the drive to five hours. The police alternatives on those days are the DN1A via Săcele and Cheia from Brașov, or the DN73 and DN72A west from the Bran area.

At the castle, parking is in private lots around the village. Bran Castle says there are several, none run by the castle, and all charge a fee.

Driving yourself makes sense if Bran is one stop on a longer Transylvania road trip. For a one-day return, the driver spends more than six hours at the wheel and sees the Prahova Valley through a windscreen.

How far is Bran Castle from Bucharest, and how long does it take?

About 187 km and 2 hours 55 minutes from central Bucharest.

The 160 km figure you will see quoted, including on the castle's own page, matches the airport side of the city, not the centre. Routed on OpenStreetMap in November 2026, Piața Unirii to Bran Castle is 186.7 km and about 2 hours 55 minutes of free-flowing driving; Henri Coandă International Airport, at Otopeni on the northern edge of Bucharest, is 157.1 km and about 2 hours 45 minutes, because it starts north of the city. Brașov old town is 184.6 km from the centre, and Bran is 30.7 km and about 35 minutes beyond it.

By public transport the honest door-to-door figure is longer. Leave central Bucharest on the 07:18 InterCity and the earliest bus gets you to Bran at 10:54, about 3 hours 36 minutes later, before any walk to the station at the Bucharest end.

Bucharest to Bran Castle and Brașov: every option compared

Here is how the five ways to make the trip stack up:

OptionTo Bran, door to doorPrice (2026)ChangesBest for
Private transfer~2h 55min from the centre, ~2h 45min from the airportQuote per vehicleNoneFamilies, groups, luggage, airport arrivals, Bran and Brașov in one day
Train + bus~3h 36min on the first InterCity and busRON 75 to 85 train + 15 lei busOne, at Brașov stationCouples and solo travellers with a day bag
Shared minibusFastest listed 2h 58min from the airportSeats from 240 lei to BranNone, but shared and fixed timesSolo travellers flying in
Taxi~2h 45min from the airportAbout 750 lei from the airport rank, the castle's estimateNoneA last-minute trip
Self-drive~2h 55min, up to 5h on a crowded dayHire, fuel and parkingNoneA longer Transylvania road trip

Read down the price column and the train wins. Read down the changes column, and add the bus waiting time, and it does not.

The shared minibus deserves a word. Several companies sell seats from the airport to Brașov from about 100 lei and to Bran from about 240 lei, with dozens of departures a day, but the seat is shared, the times are fixed, and the operator can cancel up to 24 hours ahead. Our guide to shared shuttles and private transfers sets out where each one fits.

How much does each option cost in 2026?

For one person the train is cheapest: about €17 to the gate.

RON 75 for the InterRegio and 15 lei for the bus is 90 lei, about €17, to the castle gate. Add the castle ticket at 100 lei and a solo day out from Bucharest costs well under €60 return before lunch.

For four people the arithmetic changes. Four train and bus fares one way come to 360 lei, about €67, and the four of you still change at Brașov, wait for the :45 bus, and walk from the stop. The castle's own estimate for a taxi from the airport rank is about 750 lei, around €140, for the whole car.

A private transfer to Bran is quoted per vehicle on request by the carriers who drive it, and you see their offers before you choose. The Bucharest Airport to Brasov page shows the published fares for that run.

What if you land at Bucharest Airport?

Then do not go into Bucharest first.

Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) sits at Otopeni, 19 km north of the centre, on the same side of the city as the road to the mountains. A transfer from arrivals reaches Brașov in about 2 hours 40 minutes for 155 km, and Bran in about 2 hours 45 minutes, with no city traffic in between. The Bucharest Airport to Brasov transfer page has the route in detail, and the Bucharest Airport transfer guide covers every destination from the terminal.

The public route from the airport adds a step. The airport train runs to București Nord around the clock, every 40 minutes, in about 20 minutes, from a station reached through the ground floor of Arrivals. From Gara de Nord you then wait for a Brașov train.

Land at 09:00 with a backpack and the 12:21 InterCity has you in Brașov by mid-afternoon.

Land at 21:30 with two suitcases and a child, and the last CFR train to Brașov, the 21:20 from București Nord, has already left. A driver who tracks the flight is waiting either way.

Going home, the same logic holds in reverse. The Brasov to Bucharest Airport transfer collects you at the hotel and drops you at departures, with no Gara de Nord connection to protect.

Can you do Bran Castle and Brașov as a day trip from Bucharest?

Yes, but it is a long day either way.

By train and bus, it works if you leave early and keep Brașov short. Take the 07:18 InterCity from București Nord, reach Brașov at about 09:33, and catch the 09:45 bus from the station stop to Bran for 10:54. Close to three hours in Bran puts you on the 13:38 bus back, at Brașov station for 14:15, and on the 14:42 InterCity to reach Bucharest at about 16:57. That is roughly seven hours of travel for two hours at Bran and none in Brașov. Stay for the old town and the later trains, IC 534 at 16:32 or the last train back at 20:00, and the day stretches past nine in the evening.

By private transfer, the loop is Bucharest, Bran, Brașov and back: 402 km and about 6 hours 20 minutes of driving on clear roads, with someone else doing it. You arrive at Bran when it opens, have lunch and an afternoon in Brașov's old town, and leave when you are ready rather than when the train does.

The trap is the third castle. Many day trips add Peleș Castle at Sinaia, about 141 km and two hours from Bucharest on the way north. Peleș is closed every Monday and Tuesday, and closed from 2 November to 1 December 2026 for cleaning and conservation, so a three-castle day in November 2026 is a two-castle day. The Bucharest Airport to Sinaia transfer covers that stop on its own.

Staying the night is better if you have the time. Brașov is 31 km from Bran and a far better base for it than Bucharest. A night there turns seven hours of travel into two short legs: Bucharest or the airport to Brașov one day, the castle next morning before the coaches arrive, and the old town around the Black Church in the evening, when the day-trippers have gone. RATBV line 4 runs from Brașov station to the Biserica Neagră stop behind the Black Church in 16 minutes, for RON 5.

The rule is simple. Bran alone fits in a day; Bran and Brașov together deserve a night.

When is Bran Castle open, and what do tickets cost?

Daily from 9:00, noon on Mondays; adults pay 100 lei.

From 1 November to 31 March the last entry is 18:00, with doors opening at 9:00 Tuesday to Sunday and 12:00 on Monday. From 1 April to 30 October the last entry moves to 19:00. A standard ticket is 100 lei for adults, about €19, 70 lei for over-65s, 60 lei for students and 40 lei for children aged 5 to 17, and the castle warns that tickets often sell out well in advance.

The Monday rule matters more than it looks. A day trip that leaves Bucharest at 07:00 on a Monday reaches Bran two hours before the doors open, so on Mondays start later or do Brașov first.

It is sold abroad as Dracula's castle, but there is no evidence that Bram Stoker knew of it, and most historians agree that Vlad the Impaler, Vlad III, never lived there. What you see inside is Queen Marie's castle, with the art and furniture she collected, on the Transylvanian side of the old border with Wallachia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from Bucharest to Bran Castle?

Bran Castle is about 187 km from central Bucharest and 157 km from Bucharest Airport, around 2 hours 55 minutes by car or private transfer on a clear road. There is no train to Bran: the public route is a train from București Nord to Brașov, 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 41 minutes, then a bus from Brașov, hourly from the railway station stop and more often on weekdays from Autogara 2. A private transfer is the only booked, door-to-door option between the city or the airport and the castle gate.

Is there a train from Bucharest to Bran Castle?

No. Trains from București Nord run only as far as Brașov, 31 km short of Bran. InterCity trains take about 2 hours 15 minutes and cost RON 85 in second class with a seat reservation; InterRegio trains take 2 hours 26 minutes to 2 hours 41 minutes for RON 75. From Brașov a bus or taxi covers the last leg, which is why a private transfer from Bucharest, with no change at Brașov, is the simpler choice for families and groups.

Where does the bus from Brașov to Bran Castle leave from?

Buses to Bran leave from Autogara 2, every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly at weekends by the castle's figures, and one runs hourly from the stop beside Brașov railway station, known as Autogara 1, at a quarter to the hour, calling at Autogara 2 fifteen minutes later. It reaches Bran Centru, by the castle, 1 hour 9 minutes after leaving the station, for 15 lei. Train passengers can step straight off the train and onto the bus. A private transfer from Bucharest skips the change at Brașov altogether.

How much is the train from Bucharest to Brașov in 2026?

A second-class CFR Călători ticket from București Nord to Brașov costs RON 75 on an InterRegio train and RON 85 on an InterCity train, seat reservation included, about €14 and €16. Bought on board, the same journey costs RON 111.50 and RON 128.50. Other companies on the line sell their own tickets. The train still stops at Brașov, 31 km short of Bran Castle, while a private transfer goes from the door to the castle gate with no change.

Can I do Bran Castle and Brașov as a day trip from Bucharest?

Yes, but it is a long day. By train and bus, the 07:18 InterCity and the 09:45 bus reach Bran at 10:54, and the 13:38 bus and 14:42 train get you back to Bucharest at about 16:57, with no time in Brașov. A private transfer covers the 402 km loop of Bucharest, Bran and Brașov in about 6 hours 20 minutes of driving and leaves time for both places.

What is the best way to get from Bucharest Airport to Brașov and Bran Castle?

A private transfer from the arrivals hall is the most direct option: about 155 km and 2 hours 40 minutes to Brașov, and 157 km and 2 hours 45 minutes to Bran, without going into Bucharest. By public transport you take the airport train to București Nord, about 20 minutes and every 40 minutes, then a train to Brașov and the bus to Bran. A driver who tracks your flight also covers a late landing after the last useful train.

What are Bran Castle's opening hours?

From 1 November to 31 March Bran Castle opens at 9:00 Tuesday to Sunday and at 12:00 on Monday, with last entry at 18:00. From 1 April to 30 October the last entry is 19:00. Adult tickets cost 100 lei, about €19. On Mondays a day trip from Bucharest should leave later or visit Brașov first, because the castle does not open until noon.

Should I stay overnight in Brașov when visiting Bran Castle?

If you want to see Brașov as well as Bran, yes. Brașov is 31 km from the castle, so a night there turns a seven-hour round trip from Bucharest into two short legs and lets you reach Bran when it opens. For Bran alone, a day trip from Bucharest works, and a private transfer makes the return the same evening easier than the last train.
