In This Guide

Four people with four ski bags and four suitcases need a van, not an estate car, even though the estate has four seats. A saloon takes a couple's soft bags, an estate takes a pair of ski bags or a boot bag each, and an eight-seat van carries four to six ski bags once six to eight people are aboard. Declare every ski bag, board bag, boot bag and suitcase when you book, and the carrier sends the right vehicle.

This guide works through each vehicle class with the published figures behind it: the manufacturer's boot space, our own route-page rows and what operators who load these vans every winter say fits. It is part of our complete guide to ski transfers in Europe.

Will four sets of skis fit in a transfer car?

No. Not with four people in it.

A saloon is the couple's car. Our route pages list the Sedan / Saloon class for one to three passengers with two to three bags, and the Geneva Airport to Courchevel page puts it plainly: "a saloon that seats four does not take four ski bags". We are not going to invent a ski count for the boot of a saloon, because no manufacturer publishes one.

An estate is the honest middle. The Skoda Octavia Estate, a typical car in the Estate / Comfort class, has 640 litres behind the rear seats and 1,700 litres with them folded, per Parkers, more than the Ford Focus Estate's 575 litres. The catch is that the seats do not fold completely flat, and a folded seat is a seat nobody sits in. So an estate carries skis well for two or three people, and badly for four. Our route pages say the same thing in one line: the Estate / Comfort row is best for "a pair of ski bags, or a boot bag each".

Four skiers in an estate means four ski bags, four boot bags and four suitcases competing for 640 litres. That is a van booking.

How many ski bags fit in an eight-seat van?

Fewer than eight, once eight people are sitting in it.

The typical eight-seat transfer van is a Mercedes-Benz V-Class or a vehicle of the same shape; past eight people the vehicle becomes a minibus, such as a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Parkers measures 1,030 litres behind the last row of the Long version and 1,410 litres on the Extra Long, and 4,630 litres with the rear chairs out. Operators who load these vans put a standard check-in suitcase at about 100 litres, so eight passengers with a suitcase each fill roughly 800 of the Long's 1,030 litres before a single ski bag goes in.

That is why the seat count is not the ski count. An operator on the Geneva ski run publishes its own figure for a nine-seat van: six to eight passengers when ski equipment is aboard, with four to six ski bags of about 190 cm, four to six boot bags and two to four medium suitcases. A family of four, by the same figure, fits four ski bags, four boot bags, four cabin bags and two medium suitcases.

Read the last column against your own group, not the seat column. A van booked for six with full kit is comfortable; a van booked for eight with full kit is full.

Do boot bags and snowboard bags count as luggage?

Yes, for space. Not for price.

A snowboard bag takes the floor of a ski bag, so count it as one. A boot bag is the item people forget: square, heavy and hard to stack, it takes the room a suitcase would. On TransferBnB ski transfers skis, snowboards, boots and poles travel free, and the only thing asked of you is the count.

What vehicle do you need for six people with skis?

An eight-seat van.

Six people leave two seats and the space behind the last row for kit, which is the configuration the operator figure above describes as comfortable: six to eight aboard with four to six ski bags. If all six bring a ski bag, a boot bag and a suitcase each, say so in the request, because eighteen pieces is past what one van's figures promise, and the carrier may offer a larger van or a minibus instead. Our family cost comparison runs the per-person numbers on the van for exactly this reason.

Will a 190 cm ski bag fit in a transfer van or an estate?

In a van, yes, lengthwise. In an estate, ask first.

A 190 cm bag is not an outlier. It is the size British Airways accepts at 190 x 75 x 65 cm, and the operator figure above counts ski bags at about 190 cm. Operators who load vans every winter say a 180 cm bag cannot stand upright in one or lie across its width, so it goes along the floor from the tailgate, and two pairs of skis in thin bags can slide under the rear seats. An estate is the harder case: Parkers gives the Octavia's boot in litres, not in length, and its rear seats do not fold flat, so a long bag with four people aboard is the carrier's question to answer, not a promise.

Do transfer vans use roof boxes or trailers?

Some do, for larger groups; ask rather than assume.

A roof box or a trailer is the carrier's equipment, and whether one is fitted depends on the vehicle that answers your request. If your group needs one, say so. In Switzerland the motorway vignette applies to "all motor vehicles and trailers weighing up to 3.5 tonnes", per the Swiss customs office. That is the carrier's cost, not yours, and it is one more reason a carrier wants the count before the day. Which borders a ski transfer crosses, and the other vignettes and tolls on the way, are in our guide to ski transfer border crossings.

Do private ski transfers charge extra for skis?

Not on TransferBnB: skis, snowboards, boots and poles travel free.

The charge for skis sits elsewhere in the trip. Airlines price the ski bag per flight, which our airline ski bag fees ranking sets out for twelve carriers, and shared shuttles count a ski bag as a hold item, which our shared shuttle price guide covers corridor by corridor. On a private transfer the vehicle is yours, so the equipment rides in the price you accepted.

Book a transfer sized for your gear

TransferBnB is a marketplace: you post the trip, verified local carriers who drive that road send offers, and you choose one. The vehicle in each offer is the one the carrier will send, so the count you give decides it.

In the booking note, list four numbers: ski bags, snowboard bags, boot bags and suitcases. Then start from your corridor, such as Geneva Airport to Courchevel, Geneva Airport to Chamonix, Munich Airport to Kitzbühel or Zurich Airport to St Anton, or from our ski resort transfers page for any other resort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will four sets of skis and suitcases fit in an airport transfer car?

Not with four people in it. TransferBnB's route pages list the saloon for one to three passengers and say a saloon that seats four does not take four ski bags, and the estate row is best for a pair of ski bags or a boot bag each. Four skiers with four ski bags and four suitcases should book a van.

How many ski bags fit in an eight-seat van?

About four to six once six to eight people are aboard, per one Geneva operator's published figure for a nine-seat van. A Mercedes-Benz V-Class Long has 1,030 litres behind the last row, and eight suitcases of about 100 litres fill most of it before any ski bag goes in.

Do boot bags and snowboard bags count as luggage on a ski transfer?

Yes, for space. A snowboard bag takes the floor length of a ski bag, and a boot bag takes the room of a small suitcase. On TransferBnB they travel free, but put each one in the count when you book so the carrier sends a vehicle they fit in.

What size vehicle do I need for six people with skis?

An eight-seat van. With six aboard, the two spare seats and the space behind the last row take the kit, which matches the operator figure of six to eight passengers with four to six ski bags. If everyone also brings a suitcase and a boot bag, say so, because the carrier may offer a larger vehicle.

Do private ski transfers charge extra for skis and snowboards?

Not on TransferBnB: skis, snowboards, boots and poles travel free on every ski transfer, and you only need to declare them when you book. Ski bag charges belong to airlines, which price them per flight, and to shared shuttles, which count a ski bag as a hold item.

Will a 190 cm ski bag fit in a transfer van or an estate car?

In a van, yes, laid lengthwise along the floor from the tailgate; operators say a 180 cm bag cannot stand upright or lie across a van's width. In an estate it depends on the car's load length, which reviews do not publish, and estate rear seats often do not fold flat, so ask the carrier before booking one for long skis. British Airways accepts ski bags up to 190 x 75 x 65 cm, so 190 cm is a normal size.

Do ski transfer vans use roof boxes or trailers?

Some carriers fit them for larger groups, but it depends on the vehicle that answers your request, so ask in the booking note. A trailer needs its own Swiss motorway vignette, since the vignette applies to all vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 tonnes; that is the carrier's cost, not yours.
