Book the quartier, not the resort
Méribel is a valley of four quartiers on one road, not a single address: Les Allues at the bottom, then Méribel Village, Méribel Centre and Méribel-Mottaret at 1,750 m above them all. A driver given only the word Méribel has a valley and a climb, and no idea where in it you sleep. La Tania catches people out for the opposite reason: it reads like a neighbour on the map, but it belongs to Courchevel and is reached by a different turning.
Give the quartier, the accommodation name and the street. If you are staying in La Tania, book the Courchevel route instead of this one.
About This Transfer
You walk out of Geneva Airport arrivals into a waiting car, and about two and a half hours later it stops outside the door you booked, in a valley that is four separate villages rather than one address. The road does the easy part first: the A43 motorway south to Albertville, then the RN90 dual carriageway up the Tarentaise to Moûtiers, fast and dull and free of surprises. At Moûtiers the valley floor runs out. The last 18 km is the D90, a climb through Les Allues and the hamlets above it, and it is the only stretch of the drive that behaves like a mountain road.
The distance is the number to pin down first. Figures of about 121 km to 140 km circulate widely and cannot be road distances, because the same sources pair them with about two hours on a corridor that is motorway almost to Albertville, which works out at 60 km/h on a road built for a good deal more. The operators who drive this corridor every week publish 177 to 182 km, and the neighbouring valley's tourist office measures 179 km to Courchevel over the same road, with Méribel leaving it at the same Moûtiers exit for an 18 km climb of its own. This page ships about 180 km, and about 2h 30min to 2h 45min midweek.
Nobody at the Méribel end publishes a drive time from Geneva at all, which is how the low figures survived unchallenged.
Méribel is not one address. The valley holds four quartiers: Méribel-Centre, Méribel Village, Les Allues down on the D90, and Méribel-Mottaret at 1,750 m at the top, which is a further climb beyond the centre and the last drop a driver makes. A booking that says only Méribel gives your driver a valley, and La Tania, which people book by mistake, belongs to Courchevel and is reached by another road entirely.
No railway reaches Méribel. The rails end at Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains, and from there it is a regional bus at around €12 per adult, a taxi at €65 to Méribel Centre from a rank holding 34 cars, or the car you already booked. Every one of the three climbs the same D90, so the only real difference is how many times you and your ski bags get out and get in again. Albertville
The handover point of the whole drive. The motorway stops here and the RN90 takes over, which is the moment the transfer changes from a fast run across Savoie into a valley road with a resort at the end of it. An old Olympic host town, it now does its heaviest work on winter Saturdays, when every car bound for the Tarentaise passes the same junctions inside the same few hours. If the drive is going to lose time, it starts losing it here.
Ville d'Albertville →Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains
The last railway station before the mountains, and the reason every public-transport plan for Méribel ends in a road leg. Regional coaches climb from here at around €12 per adult, with reduced fares for under-26s and 10 percent off when booked more than two days ahead, and the taxi rank holds 34 cars for 1 to 8 passengers at €65 to Méribel Centre. It is also where the Tarentaise sorts itself out, because the roundabouts below the town split the traffic for half a dozen valleys. A private transfer takes the same turning without stopping at it.

Eighteen kilometres of climbing from the Moûtiers roundabouts to the top of the valley, through Les Allues and the hamlets of Raffort, La Gittaz and Chandon. This is the stretch French winter equipment law is written for: from 1 November to 31 March, a vehicle driving to a ski resort in Savoie carries winter tyres, snow tyres or chains, and this road is inside that zone. In a private car it is the closing act of the journey. On the bus-and-taxi chain it is the leg where the changes and the extra fares land.

The highest of the four quartiers and the one furthest up the road, which makes it the drop that most rewards saying out loud when you book. Mottaret sits at 1,750 m with the ski area on its doorstep, well above Méribel-Centre, Méribel Village and Les Allues, and the drive between the bottom of the valley and the top is not a five-minute matter with luggage. Name the quartier and the accommodation, and the car finishes the climb you would otherwise finish yourself.

The point of the drive. Méribel's lifts open into the 3 Vallées on one pass, and the 2026/27 season runs from 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 for the resort and for the wider area alike. An adult six-day pass is €378.50 in the opening fortnight from 5 to 18 December 2026 and €421.00 from 19 December, which is a useful thing to hold in your head before deciding the transfer is the expensive part of the week.

One terminal building with two sectors, and your airline decides which of them you walk out of. Flights from the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands land in the Swiss sector, where your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board. Flights arriving from within France land in the France Sector, which has its own baggage carousel and its own road out through the Ferney-Voltaire customs post. Give your carrier the flight number and the sector sorts itself out.

Four quartiers climbing one road through the commune of Les Allues, and a car reaches all of them. Méribel-Mottaret sits highest at 1,750 m and is the last stop on the road; Méribel Centre is the main hub below it; Méribel Village is smaller and quieter, on the side facing Courchevel; Les Allues is the working village down in the valley, with the hamlets of Raffort, La Gittaz and Chandon around it. The free MÉRIBUS shuttle links them once you have arrived, which is a good reason to be dropped where you actually sleep rather than at the nearest bus stop.

Best Travel Times
Saturday is the day the whole Tarentaise changes over, and the day to travel around if your flights allow it. Les 3 Vallées puts the advice plainly: come Sunday to Sunday and you avoid the traffic jams. The scheduled shared coaches make the same point without meaning to, since they serve Méribel only at weekends and only at two fixed stops, which packs several days of arrivals into two. A midweek landing runs close to the free-flow 2h 30min, and a Tuesday in March barely notices the road at all. If Saturday is fixed by the flights, take the earliest one you can and be past Albertville before the middle of the day.
Traffic Patterns
The delay does not happen on the mountain. It builds on the RN90 between Albertville and Moûtiers, a single dual carriageway carrying every car bound for Méribel, Courchevel, Val Thorens, Les Menuires, La Plagne, Les Arcs, Tignes and Val d'Isère, and it builds again at the Moûtiers roundabouts where those flows finally separate. The Swiss stretch out of Geneva is rarely the problem, and neither is the D90 itself, which is 18 km of steady climb rather than anything technical. What makes the last leg slow in February is the volume that arrived at Moûtiers behind you.
Road & Border Notes
One border, taken on the motorway a few minutes after leaving the airport, with no scheduled stop. Carry a passport or an ID card and have it to hand. The Swiss motorway vignette costs CHF 40 for 2026, is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027, and carries a CHF 200 fine plus the price of the vignette for a car caught without one; on a private transfer that is your carrier's cost and not a line on your quote. From 1 November to 31 March, French law requires vehicles driving to ski resorts to be equipped with snow tyres, winter tyres or chains, and Savoie is one of the departments covered, which puts the entire D90 inside the obligation. That is why a February quote and an August quote are not the same vehicle.

Méribel-Centre, Méribel Village, Les Allues and Méribel-Mottaret are four different drops on one road, Mottaret is a further climb above the centre at 1,750 m, and La Tania is a Courchevel village that people book on this route by mistake. Then declare the equipment, because skis, boards and boot bags decide which vehicle the carrier sends and an estate that seats four does not swallow four hard ski cases. Last, say so in the notes if you are landing on a Saturday in February. A carrier who knows builds the changeover into the pickup rather than meeting it on the RN90.

The pressure inside that window is not spread evenly: it collects on Saturdays, when one dual carriageway carries the arrivals for every resort in the Tarentaise. An adult six-day 3 Vallées pass is €421.00 from 19 December 2026, so for a family the transfer is the smaller line on the bill and the one that is easier to get wrong.

Low DemandThe lifts stop on 18 April 2027 and the valley empties inside a week. What is left is the quietest and cheapest run of the year on a road with nothing on it, and a resort putting the winter away. The French winter equipment obligation ends on 31 March, so an April car is on summer tyres and the D90 is simply a mountain road again. Worth the trip if the mountain rather than the skiing is the point.
