World Championships, 1 to 14 February 2027: two roads closed daily until 15:00
The organiser of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships closes two roads on the eastern side of the resort every day from 1 to 14 February 2027. The Barzettes road between the Etoile roundabout and Aminona is closed from 06:00 to 15:00 (times subject to change) except to authorised vehicles, and the organiser states that third-party transport operators will have no access to the Barzettes road or area. The Plumachit and Nationale road is closed from 07:30 to 15:00 (times to be confirmed) with no exceptions, and on foot it needs an authorised person's wristband. Authorised persons need a pass, and the organiser says they must register on its form to receive it by post by the end of 2026. If your address is on either road, agree the set-down point with your accommodation and your carrier before you travel.
As of October 2026 the organiser has published closures for these two roads and nothing yet for the resort centre. Visitors arriving by car must park in Sierre: there is no spectator parking in Crans-Montana during the Championships.
About This Transfer
You walk out of Swiss arrivals at Geneva Airport, the bags and skis go into the back of the car once, and you do not lift them again until the plateau. The whole drive stays in Switzerland. The car takes the A1 to Lausanne and the A9 past Vevey, Montreux and Martigny up the Rhône valley, leaves the motorway near Sion, and climbs the last half an hour to Crans-Montana at 1,500 metres.
The drive is about 181 km and takes about 2h 15min in free-flowing traffic. The tourist office prints the same thing, 180 km and approximately 2h15, so shorter figures you may have seen for this route are simply wrong. About 157 km of it is motorway and the last 23 km is ordinary road.
There are two ways up. The motorway signs Crans-Montana at the Sierre-Ouest exit, and the tourist office describes that road, 15 km up from Sierre. The fastest route leaves one exit earlier, at Sion-Est, and climbs through Granges and Chermignon. It is the quicker way to Crans, Montana and Les Barzettes, by about a minute, and only Aminona is quicker by Sierre-Ouest. Your carrier chooses on the day.
Sion Airport is far closer, about 23 km and 35 minutes from the resort, but as of October 2026 its own flight plan lists a single scheduled route, a summer service to Palma de Mallorca. Geneva is the airport with the flights. Our airport table for Alpine ski resorts sets Crans-Montana beside the other Valais resorts, the 2026/27 Alpine events calendar has the race schedule for the World Championships, and the Geneva Airport ski transfer guide covers the airport end.
- ✓ About 181 km, Swiss motorway to the Rhône valley, no border and no customs
- ✓ About 2h 15min in free-flowing traffic, the last half an hour a climb to 1,500 metres
- ✓ Drop at your accommodation, not at the funicular station. Two roads are closed until 15:00 from 1 to 14 February 2027
Sights Along the Route
Your driver covers the distance while you enjoy the scenery.
Château de Chillon
The motorway passes Montreux at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, and the castle sits on its rock at the water's edge below. Its foundation calls it Switzerland's most visited historical monument. On a winter arrival it is a view from the car. On a summer transfer with time in hand it is the one stop on the lake worth adding, as long as you ask your carrier first, because waiting time is priced, not assumed.
Château de Chillon →Valère and Tourbillon, Sion
Two hills face each other above the capital of the Valais, and they are the emblem of the city. Valère carries a basilica inside an old fortified village, which now houses the canton's history museum, and Tourbillon stands opposite. Sion is where the car leaves the motorway, so the two hills mark the end of the valley part of the drive.
Valais History Museum →St-Léonard underground lake
Between Sion and Sierre, on the valley road the car follows after the Sion-Est exit, lies what its operators call the largest underground lake in Europe, and it is navigable. It is a summer stop only: in 2026 it opened daily from 19 March to 1 November, so it is shut for the ski season.
Lac Souterrain de St-Léonard →The Sierre to Crans-Montana funicular
This is how the railway reaches the plateau. The funicular climbs 927 metres from Sierre in 13 minutes on a line just over 4.2 km long, renewed in 2022, and the tourist office calls it the longest in Europe. It is a funicular, not a cable car, and it ends at the station in Montana. A transfer passenger does not need it on arrival day. On race days in February 2027 the organiser makes public transport between Sierre and the resort free and runs the funicular more often and for longer hours.

Pickup: Geneva Airport (GVA)
Geneva Airport has a France Sector as well as its Swiss side, and for this drive only the Swiss side matters. Your driver waits in the Swiss arrivals hall with a name board. Moving between the France Sector and the Swiss side by road means going through the Ferney-Voltaire customs, so a pickup there adds a border to a journey that otherwise has none. Give your carrier the flight number so it can follow the landing.
Popular Pickup Points:
- • Swiss sector arrivals hall, meet and greet with a name board
- • Flight number on the booking, so a late landing does not lose you the car
- • Geneva city hotel pickups on the same motorway
- • Airport railway station directly beneath the terminal, for anyone splitting the party
Drop-off: Crans-Montana, Valais
Crans-Montana is not one village. The resort spreads across three communes, Crans-Montana, Lens and Icogne, and runs along its plateau from Crans at one end, through Montana, to Les Barzettes and Aminona at the other. The funicular station is in Montana, so anyone arriving by rail still has a bus or a walk to a hotel in Crans. In an ordinary week a car goes to the address. From 1 to 14 February 2027 the Barzettes road, which leads to Les Barzettes and Aminona, is one of the two closed until 15:00, and the set-down point there is agreed in advance.
Popular Drop-off Points:
- • Hotels and chalets in Crans, near the Cry d'Er lift
- • Montana and the funicular station, Crans-Montana gare
- • Ycoor, in the centre of the resort
- • Les Barzettes and the Violettes lift, outside the February 2027 closure hours
- • Aminona, outside the February 2027 closure hours
- • Lens and Icogne, the neighbouring communes below Crans
Local Route Knowledge
Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.
Best Travel Times
In an ordinary week any day works and the 2h 15min holds in clear traffic. A late landing is where the car matters most: in the timetable in force from 13 December 2026, the last train that still meets the funicular leaves the airport at 19:55. From 1 to 14 February 2027 the hour matters more than the day. The published closure hours on both roads end at 15:00, so an afternoon landing puts you on the plateau after three in the afternoon.
Traffic Patterns
The motorway is one road from Lausanne up the Rhône valley, the same one that serves Verbier, Zermatt and Saas-Fee. The organiser of the World Championships warns that journey times may be longer than usual during the event. The climb is about half an hour by either road. The tourist office links to the TCS traffic page for live road conditions.
Road & Border Notes
No border at all: Geneva, Vaud and Valais, nothing else. Switzerland has no legal winter tyre obligation, though the federal advice is to fit them from October until Easter and a badly equipped driver can be found liable after an accident. The motorway vignette is CHF 40, there are no other tolls on the route, and on a transfer the carrier normally pays it.
Carrier Tip
Say which part of the resort: Crans, Montana, Les Barzettes or Aminona. With a street address the carrier can choose the road up and, for the Championships fortnight, see at once whether the address is on the Barzettes road or the Plumachit and Nationale road. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, because they decide the vehicle.

Price & Vehicle Options
A private transfer from Geneva Airport to Crans-Montana starts from around €225 one way. The price is per vehicle, not per person: four people in an estate pay about €66 each, and eight in a minivan about €41 each. Declare skis, snowboards and boot bags when you book, because they change which vehicle a carrier sends, and a saloon that seats three does not take three ski bags.
| Vehicle | Seats | Luggage | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | 2-3 bags | from €225 | Couples and solo travellers, soft luggage | |
| 1-4 | 4 bags | from €265 | A pair of ski bags, or a golf bag each in summer | |
| 5-8 | 8 bags | from €330 | Families and groups with full ski equipment | |
| 8-16 | group | from €495 | Ski clubs and groups travelling to the races together |
Prices are per vehicle, one way and indicative, and the carrier confirms them before you pay. They move with the calendar and with demand, and a World Championships fortnight is not an ordinary week. TransferBnB is a request-for-offers marketplace, so you compare real quotes from carriers who want the job, not a published tariff.
When to Travel This Route
Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.
Winter (Dec-Mar)
Peak DemandThe lift company plans to open the ski area on 19 December 2026. The fortnight that matters is 1 to 14 February 2027, when the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships come back to Crans-Montana for the first time since 1987: 11 races in 14 days on the Mont Lachaux and Nationale slopes, with the women's downhill on Saturday 6 February and the men's on Sunday 7 February. The final ticket sales phase opened on 1 October 2026. Book the car when you book the flight, and read the road closures at the top of this page before you choose an arrival time.
- Ski area due to open 19 December 2026
- FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, 1 to 14 February 2027
- Women's downhill 6 February, men's downhill 7 February
- Two roads closed daily, 1 to 14 February, until 15:00
Spring (Apr-May)
Late-Season SkiingThe lift company plans to close the ski area on 4 April 2027, weather permitting. Spring skiing runs to that day, and the drive is the same 2h 15min in clear traffic.
- Ski area due to close 4 April 2027
- About 2h 15min in clear traffic
- No Swiss winter tyre date to watch
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Medium DemandThe same drive with none of the winter caveats. The lake stretch past Montreux is the reason to leave time for Chillon, and the St-Léonard underground lake in the valley is open. The free shuttle buses run on the plateau all year, so a hotel at either end of the resort works without a car once you have arrived.
- St-Léonard underground lake open
- Château de Chillon worth the stop
- Free resort shuttle buses all year
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
Low Demand, One Busy WeekThis autumn ends with the lifts: the ski area may open in part from Saturday 28 November 2026 if the snow allows. Next autumn starts with golf, when the Omega European Masters is played from 2 to 5 September 2027, so book a car for that week early. Switzerland has no winter tyre date, so a carrier's equipment follows the weather, not the calendar.
- Partial ski opening possible from 28 November 2026
- Omega European Masters, 2 to 5 September 2027
- No Swiss winter tyre date to watch

Important Information
Meeting your driver at Geneva Airport
Your driver waits in the Swiss sector arrivals hall with a name board. Geneva Airport also has a France Sector, but changing between it and the Swiss side by road means going through the Ferney-Voltaire customs. On an all-Swiss drive that adds a border and saves nothing, so the Swiss arrivals hall is the pickup. Give your carrier the flight number.
World Championships, 1 to 14 February 2027
Two roads on the eastern side of the resort, the Barzettes road and the Plumachit and Nationale road, are closed every day of the fortnight until 15:00. The hours, the pass and the wristband rule are in the note at the top of this page. Tell your carrier when you book if your address is on either road.
Winter tyres in Switzerland
Switzerland has no legal obligation to fit winter tyres. The federal advice is to fit them from October until Easter, and a driver whose car is not properly equipped can be found liable after an accident. A carrier working this corridor in winter is equipped for it. If you are driving yourself, check the TCS traffic page the tourist office links to before you set off.
The Swiss vignette and who pays it
The route is on Swiss motorway for about 157 km, so the vehicle needs the CHF 40 vignette, and a car caught without one pays a CHF 200 fine plus the vignette. The 2026 vignette is valid until 31 January 2027, the day before the Championships open. On a private transfer the carrier normally pays it. There are no other tolls on the route.
Skis, boards and luggage
Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book, not at the kerb. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases.
Child seats
Child and booster seats are available on request from carriers on this route. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type. Ask when you request offers, not after you accept one.
Waiting time and a delayed flight
Carriers on TransferBnB follow the inbound flight and adjust the pickup, so a delayed landing does not cost you the car. Free waiting time after landing varies by carrier and is stated in the offer you accept.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a transfer from Geneva Airport to Crans-Montana take?
About 2 hours 15 minutes in free-flowing traffic, which is also the figure the Crans-Montana tourist office gives for the drive from Geneva Airport. The route is the A1 to Lausanne and the A9 up the Rhône valley, then about half an hour of road up to the plateau. The organiser of the 2027 World Championships warns that journey times may be longer than usual from 1 to 14 February 2027.
How far is Crans-Montana from Geneva Airport by road?
About 181 km by road. The Crans-Montana tourist office gives 180 km. About 157 km of the drive is Swiss motorway, the A1 and the A9, and the last 23 km is ordinary road climbing from the Rhône valley to the resort at 1,500 metres.
Which airport is closest to Crans-Montana?
Sion Airport, about 23 km and 35 minutes from the resort. Geneva Airport is about 181 km and 2h 15min away, and the tourist office puts Zurich Airport at 300 km and approximately 3h30 by car. Sion's scheduled service is thin: as of October 2026 its own flight plan lists one route, a summer service to Palma de Mallorca. For most itineraries that leaves Geneva as the airport to fly to, with a private transfer up the Rhône valley.
Is there a train from Geneva Airport to Crans-Montana?
There is a train to Sierre, in the valley below, and a funicular from there. Direct trains run from Geneva Airport to Sierre, the funicular station is about 5 minutes on foot from the railway station, and the funicular takes 13 minutes to its top station in Montana. In the timetable in force from 13 December 2026 the journey is 2h 43min from the airport to that station with one change, and the last train that still meets the funicular leaves the airport at 19:55. On Friday and Saturday nights a 21:55 train connects at Sierre with a night bus that reaches Montana at about 01:05. A private transfer takes about 2h 15min, leaves when your bags arrive and takes you to your accommodation, not to the station.
Which motorway exit is it for Crans-Montana?
The A9 signs Crans-Montana at the Sierre-Ouest exit, and the road from Sierre climbs 15 km to the resort. The fastest route from Geneva leaves one exit earlier, at Sion-Est, and climbs through Granges and Chermignon. It is the quicker way to Crans, Montana and Les Barzettes, by about a minute, and only Aminona is quicker by Sierre-Ouest.
Do I cross a border or need a vignette between Geneva Airport and Crans-Montana?
There is no border: the whole drive is in Switzerland, through the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais. The vehicle needs the Swiss motorway vignette, CHF 40, and there are no other tolls. On a private transfer the carrier normally pays it.
Do I need winter tyres to drive to Crans-Montana?
Not by law. Switzerland has no legal obligation to fit winter tyres, but the federal advice is to fit them from October until Easter, and a driver whose car is not properly equipped can be found liable after an accident. The tourist office describes the roads up to Crans-Montana as mountain roads suitable for all drivers. On a private transfer the carrier's vehicle is equipped for winter, so it is not something you arrange.
How do I get to the 2027 World Ski Championships in Crans-Montana from Geneva Airport?
Fly to Geneva, then take a private transfer or the train to Sierre and the funicular. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships run from 1 to 14 February 2027. Spectators arriving by car must park in Sierre, and public transport between Sierre and the resort is free on race days. Every day of the fortnight the Barzettes road between the Etoile roundabout and Aminona is closed from 06:00 to 15:00 (times subject to change) except to authorised vehicles, with no access for third-party transport operators, and the Plumachit and Nationale road is closed from 07:30 to 15:00 (times to be confirmed), where even pedestrians need a wristband. As of October 2026 nothing is published for the resort centre. For an address on either road, agree the set-down point with your accommodation and your carrier.
What does a private transfer from Geneva Airport to Crans-Montana cost?
On TransferBnB, carrier offers start from around €225 for a saloon carrying 1 to 3 passengers, rising to around €265 for an estate, €330 for a minivan seating 5 to 8, and €495 for a minibus. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and they are indicative until a carrier confirms the quote. The carrier normally pays for the Swiss motorway vignette.
When does Crans-Montana open for the 2026/27 ski season?
The lift company plans to open the ski area on 19 December 2026 and close it on 4 April 2027. A partial opening may come earlier, from Saturday 28 November 2026, if snow conditions allow. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships take place in the resort from 1 to 14 February 2027.
Why Book This Route?

- • The carrier picks the road up that suits the part of the resort you are staying in

- • Priced per vehicle, not per head: about €41 each for eight in a minivan

What our customers say
Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
Thomas B. — London, UK Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
Marta R. — Munich, Germany Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
Olivier D. — Lyon, France Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria
