Work backwards from the flight, not forwards from check-out

Geneva Airport recommends arriving around 3 hours before departure, and earlier during busy periods, especially in winter. The drive down is about 2h 15min in free-flowing traffic. Add the two and the car leaves the plateau about five and a quarter hours before the flight: a 13:00 departure means a pickup at about 07:45, before any margin for snow or a busy Saturday.

From 1 to 14 February 2027 two roads in the resort are closed every day until 15:00, the Barzettes road from 06:00 (times subject to change) and the Plumachit and Nationale road from 07:30 (times to be confirmed). For a morning flight from an address on either, agree the pickup point with your accommodation and your carrier in advance.

About This Transfer

The car pulls up, the skis go in the back once, and you do not touch them again until the airport. From Crans-Montana the drive to Geneva Airport is about 181 km and takes about 2h 15min in free-flowing traffic: about half an hour of road down to the Rhône valley, then about 157 km of motorway, the A9 past Martigny and Montreux and the A1 from Lausanne. It is Swiss the whole way, with no border to plan for.

Ski equipment changes the airport end. Geneva Airport's self bag drop does not accept oversized baggage, and the airport lists skis among the oversized items that follow their own procedure. Give your carrier the flight number, not a time you worked out yourself, and let it set the pickup.

The train deserves a straight answer. The funicular from Montana and a direct train from Sierre reach the airport in 2h 41min. In the timetable in force from 13 December 2026 the first connection from the plateau arrives at 08:45, which suits flights from about 11:45 and nothing earlier, and it starts from the station in Montana, not from your hotel. A car is booked for the hour your flight sets. The Geneva Airport ski transfer guide covers the airport end, the 2026/27 Alpine events calendar has the World Championships race days, and the ski resort transfers page explains how equipment and group size shape the offers you get.

  • ✓ Pickup time worked back from your flight, not from check-out
  • ✓ About 181 km and 2h 15min, all in Switzerland, no border
  • ✓ Skis are oversized baggage at Geneva and cannot use self bag drop

joining the A9, at Sion

Valère and Tourbillon, Sion

Two hills face each other above the capital of the Valais, and they are the emblem of the city. Valère carries a basilica inside an old fortified village, which now houses the canton's history museum, and Tourbillon stands opposite. On the way out they mark the point where the mountain road is behind you and the motorway begins.

Valais History Museum →

Château de Chillon

The castle sits on its rock at the edge of Lake Geneva, below the motorway at Montreux. Its foundation calls it Switzerland's most visited historical monument. With an evening flight and a morning to spare it is the stop to add on the way down, as long as you agree it with your carrier first, because waiting time is priced, not assumed.

Château de Chillon →
from Montana down to Sierre

The Crans-Montana to Sierre funicular

The funicular drops 927 metres to Sierre in 13 minutes on a line just over 4.2 km long, and the tourist office calls it the longest in Europe. It is how a rail passenger starts the journey to Geneva, from the station in Montana. For a transfer passenger it is a ride to take for its own sake earlier in the week, not on departure morning.

Route Overview

Pickup: Crans-Montana, Valais

The resort runs along a plateau from Crans at one end, through Montana, to Les Barzettes and Aminona at the other, in three communes: Crans-Montana, Lens and Icogne. In an ordinary week a car collects at the address, so give the street and say which part of the resort you are in. From 1 to 14 February 2027 the Barzettes road, which leads to Les Barzettes and Aminona, is one of the two closed until 15:00, and the pickup point there is agreed in advance.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • Hotels and chalets in Crans, near the Cry d'Er lift
  • • Montana and the funicular station, Crans-Montana gare
  • • Ycoor, in the centre of the resort
  • • Les Barzettes and the Violettes lift, outside the February 2027 closure hours
  • • Aminona, outside the February 2027 closure hours
  • • Lens and Icogne, the neighbouring communes below Crans

Drop-off: Geneva Airport (GVA)

The car drops you at Swiss sector departures. Ski and board bags do not go through self bag drop: the airport treats them as oversized items with their own procedure, so allow for a staffed desk. The railway station is directly beneath the terminal, which matters only if part of your group is travelling on by train.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • Swiss sector departures drop-off
  • • Oversized baggage procedure for skis and boards
  • • Flight number on the booking, so the pickup follows the flight
  • • Airport railway station directly beneath the terminal

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

An afternoon flight is the comfortable one. A lunchtime departure already means an early-morning pickup, and the first rail connection from the plateau is too late for most morning flights. If you have the choice, book the later flight and keep the morning.

Traffic Patterns

After the road down, the drive joins the A9 in the Rhône valley, the same motorway that serves Zermatt, Saas-Fee and Verbier. The organiser of the World Championships warns that journey times may be longer than usual from 1 to 14 February 2027. The tourist office links to the TCS traffic page for live conditions.

Road & Border Notes

No border and no customs on the way to the airport, as long as the drop is on the Swiss side. Switzerland has no legal winter tyre obligation, though the federal advice is to fit them from October until Easter. The vignette is CHF 40, there are no other tolls, and on a transfer it is the carrier's cost. From 1 to 14 February 2027 two roads on the eastern side of the resort are closed every day until 15:00, with hours the organiser may still change.

Carrier Tip

Give the flight number and the address, and let the carrier propose the pickup time. For a departure during the Championships, say whether the address is on the Barzettes road or the Plumachit and Nationale road. The published closure hours on the Barzettes road are 06:00 to 15:00, and the organiser also states that third-party transport operators will have no access to that road or area, so the pickup point is something to settle with your accommodation before the day.

Price & Vehicle Options

A private transfer from Crans-Montana to Geneva Airport starts from around €225 one way, the same ladder as the drive up. The price is per vehicle, not per person: four people in an estate pay about €66 each, and eight in a minivan about €41 each. Declare skis, snowboards and boot bags when you book, because they decide which vehicle a carrier sends.

Prices are per vehicle, one way and indicative, and the carrier confirms them before you pay. They move with the calendar and with demand. TransferBnB is a request-for-offers marketplace, so you compare real quotes from carriers who want the job, not a published tariff.

Important Information

Ski bags at Geneva Airport

Self bag drop is not available for excess, oversized or special baggage, and the airport lists skis among the oversized items that follow a specific procedure. Plan for a staffed desk, and declare the ski bags to your carrier when you book so the vehicle fits them.

Departing during the World Championships, 1 to 14 February 2027

The organiser closes two roads on the eastern side of the resort every day of the fortnight. The Barzettes road between the Etoile roundabout and Aminona is closed from 06:00 to 15:00 (times subject to change) except to authorised vehicles, and the organiser states that third-party transport operators will have no access to the Barzettes road or area. The Plumachit and Nationale road is closed from 07:30 to 15:00 (times to be confirmed) with no exceptions, and on foot it needs an authorised person's wristband. Authorised persons need a pass, and the organiser says they must register on its form to receive it by post by the end of 2026. As of October 2026 nothing is published for the resort centre. If your address is on either road, agree the pickup point with your accommodation and your carrier before you book the flight time.

The Swiss vignette and who pays it

The drive is on Swiss motorway for about 157 km, so the vehicle needs the CHF 40 vignette. On a private transfer the carrier normally pays it. There are no other tolls on the route and no border to cross.

Winter tyres in Switzerland

Switzerland has no legal obligation to fit winter tyres. The federal advice is to fit them from October until Easter, and a driver whose car is not properly equipped can be found liable after an accident. A carrier working this corridor in winter is equipped for it.

Child seats

Child and booster seats are available on request from carriers on this route. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I leave Crans-Montana for a flight from Geneva Airport?

About five and a quarter hours before the flight on an ordinary day. Geneva Airport recommends arriving around 3 hours before departure, and earlier during busy periods, especially in winter, and the drive from Crans-Montana takes about 2h 15min in free-flowing traffic. A 13:00 flight therefore means a pickup at about 07:45, before any margin for snow or heavy traffic.

How long does the drive from Crans-Montana to Geneva Airport take?

About 2 hours 15 minutes in free-flowing traffic, for about 181 km. The first half an hour is the road down from the plateau to the Rhône valley, and the rest is about 157 km of Swiss motorway, the A9 and then the A1 from Lausanne. The whole drive is in Switzerland.

Can I get from Crans-Montana to Geneva Airport by train?

Yes, by funicular to Sierre and a direct train from there, in 2h 41min from the funicular station in Montana with one change. In the timetable in force from 13 December 2026 the first connection from the plateau, the 06:04 funicular, reaches Geneva Airport at 08:45, which by the airport's advice on check-in suits flights from about 11:45. A private transfer is booked for the hour your flight sets and takes about 2h 15min. From 1 to 14 February 2027 two roads in the resort are closed until 15:00, and a pickup on them is arranged in advance.

Can a car collect me in Crans-Montana during the 2027 World Championships?

Two roads are restricted, and as of October 2026 the organiser has published nothing yet for the resort centre. Every day from 1 to 14 February 2027 the Barzettes road between the Etoile roundabout and Aminona is closed from 06:00 to 15:00 (times subject to change) except to authorised vehicles, with no access for third-party transport operators, and the Plumachit and Nationale road is closed from 07:30 to 15:00 (times to be confirmed), where even pedestrians need a wristband. For an address on either road, agree the pickup point with your accommodation and your carrier.

Do ski bags slow down check-in at Geneva Airport?

They can. Geneva Airport's self bag drop is not available for excess, oversized or special baggage, and the airport lists skis among the oversized items that follow a specific procedure. That is one reason to follow the airport's advice on arriving early, in winter above all.

Is there a border between Crans-Montana and Geneva Airport?

No. The whole drive is in Switzerland, through the cantons of Valais, Vaud and Geneva, as long as the drop is on the Swiss side of the airport. The vehicle needs the Swiss motorway vignette, CHF 40, which the carrier normally pays on a private transfer, and there are no other tolls.

What does a private transfer from Crans-Montana to Geneva Airport cost?

On TransferBnB, carrier offers start from around €225 for a saloon carrying 1 to 3 passengers, rising to around €265 for an estate, €330 for a minivan seating 5 to 8, and €495 for a minibus. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and they are indicative until a carrier confirms the quote.

Why Book This Route?

  • • A pickup hour set by your flight, including before the first funicular of the day
  • • Skis loaded once and unloaded at departures, with no walk across Sierre
  • • The carrier works the pickup back from your flight number, with a margin for the day

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. — London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. — Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. — Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria
