In winter the road down is managed, not merely busy. The Savoie prefecture operates RECITA, a traffic regulation system on the RN90 between Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice, and this transfer drives that regulated section end to end: a metering light near Moûtiers holds traffic so the valley does not saturate, and paired lights guard the Siaix tunnel, a passage of more than 300 metres, so nothing stops inside it. An arriving skier who meets it loses an hour and still gets to the chalet. A departing one can miss a flight, which is why it belongs on this page and not the other one.
The other constraint is the ski bag. Bourg-Saint-Maurice, where the rails begin
The first town of the descent and the end of the climb, home to the railhead with its TGV and Eurostar services. If part of your group is taking the train home while the rest fly, this is where the party splits, and the tourist office's published station taxi tariff back up runs €115 for 1 to 4 passengers on 2025/26 rates. For everyone else it marks the moment the mountain driving is over: from here the road runs along the valley floor and the time risk shifts from hairpins to traffic.

The one stretch every Tarentaise departure shares, and in winter the prefecture actively meters it: RECITA holds traffic at a light near Moûtiers so the valley does not saturate, and paired lights at the Siaix tunnel keep its 300-plus metres clear of stationary vehicles. When the system is running, secondary exits close and are reserved for emergency vehicles, so the clever back road your navigation app offers is not available. The junction town where the RN90 hands over to the motorway and the mountains stop being the story. An old Olympic host, it is the point at which a departure transfer stops worrying about valley traffic: whatever the Tarentaise did to your schedule, it did it before here. On a morning with hours in hand it is also the last sensible leg-stretch before the airport run.

The last thing worth looking at before the border. The motorway passes the northern end of the Lac d'Annecy with the old town just off the exit, canals, château and all. On an afternoon flight it is the natural place to break the journey; on an early one you will pass it before it wakes, and it will still be there next season. Geneva Airport sits minutes from the city, which makes it one of the few airports in Europe where a long gap between chalet check-out and flight check-in is not a punishment. That is the destination naming the exact hour its own road jams, because the whole Tarentaise starts its descent after breakfast on changeover day. Val d'Isère's own advice for Saturdays in the holidays is to consider postponing your departure or arrival outright. If the flight is fixed on a Saturday, the answer is a collection before the valley wakes or a flight late enough to leave after the morning wave has gone down.
Traffic Patterns
The descent itself moves: the 32 km down to Bourg-Saint-Maurice is steady mountain road, and the queue forms lower down, where every resort's departures merge onto the RN90 for Moûtiers and Albertville. In winter that stretch is actively regulated by RECITA, the prefecture's system of metering lights near Moûtiers and at both ends of the Siaix tunnel, run during periods of intense traffic, which in practice means ski season weekends. While it operates, secondary exits are closed and reserved for emergency vehicles, so the instruction is to stay on the RN90 and build the wait into the departure time rather than trying to route around it.

One border, crossed on the motorway shortly before the airport, normally without a scheduled stop; carry your passport or ID card. The Swiss motorway vignette is CHF 40 for 2026, valid 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027, with a CHF 200 fine plus the vignette for a car caught without one, and it is the carrier's cost rather than a line on your quote. From 1 November to 31 March, French law requires a vehicle on ski-resort roads to carry chains for at least two drive wheels or run four winter tyres with the alpine symbol and M+S marking, and that applies to the car collecting you as much as to the one that brought you.
