The car comes to the chalet door, your skis go in the back once, and the next time you touch them is a bag drop at Geneva Airport. That is the whole proposition of a departure transfer, and on this route it is worth more than it is on most, because the alternative involves getting your equipment down a mountain road, through Moûtiers, onto a train and across a platform before the airport even starts.
The drive is 179 km by Courchevel Tourisme's own figure. It leaves the villages on the road down to Moûtiers, joins the RN90 dual carriageway to Albertville, and then it is motorway past Chambéry and the Lac du Bourget, up past Annecy, over the border and into the airport. Two hours fifteen to two hours forty five in normal conditions. The mountain part is the first thirty minutes and the rest is main road.
Ignore the two hours before departure that circulates for this airport. Geneva Airport's own check-in advice is around three hours, and earlier during busy periods, especially in winter, which is precisely when you are on this road. The hour between those figures matters most on the one morning of the week when the whole Tarentaise is making the same journey.
The detail that decides the timing is the ski bag. It counts as oversized baggage, and the airport's self bag drop is not available for excess, oversized or special baggage, so a departing skier queues at a staffed counter with everyone else who spent the week here. Three hours is a floor on this route, not a cushion, and a private transfer is the only leg of the day you can actually control. Moûtiers, where the mountain ends
The first town on the way down and the last railway station before the resorts. If you are travelling with anyone taking the train rather than flying, this is where the party splits, and it is worth knowing that the taxi rank here holds 34 cars for 1 to 8 passengers at €75 back up to Courchevel. The road out of Moûtiers is the one the whole valley uses, which is why the stretch to Albertville decides more of the journey than all the motorway after it.

Where the RN90 hands over to the motorway and the mountains stop being the point. Albertville hosted the Winter Olympics in 1992 and the Tarentaise has been living off the road and rail the Games left behind ever since. The medieval town of Conflans sits on the hill above the modern one, and on a departure with hours in hand it is the one place on this corridor where a stop is genuinely better than the airport lounge.

The motorway runs past the northern end of the Lac d'Annecy, and the old town below it is canals, a lakeside château and some of the clearest water in the Alps. On an afternoon flight it is the natural place to break a departure; on a morning flight you will pass it in the dark and it will still be there next year.

Geneva Airport sits a few minutes from the city, which makes it one of the few airports in Europe where a long gap between check-out and check-in is not a punishment. If your chalet turfs you out at ten and the flight goes at eight, ask your carrier about a city drop with an airport leg later, rather than sitting in a terminal for eight hours with ski bags you cannot check yet.

Six villages strung up one road, and the car reaches all of them. Le Praz at 1300, Courchevel Village at 1550, Courchevel Moriond at 1650 and Courchevel 1850 at the top, plus Saint-Bon at the bottom and La Tania on its own approach. For a departure the village matters more than it does on the way in, because it changes your pickup time: a collection at 1850 starts earlier than one at Le Praz for the same flight. Give the carrier the village, the chalet or hotel name and the street.

Most UK, Irish and Dutch departures go from the Swiss sector; flights to France go from the France Sector, which has its own road in through the Ferney-Voltaire customs post. Terminal 1 operates 04:00 to 00:00, which is the real constraint on a very early departure: there is a time before which there is no airport to be dropped at.

Saturday is the day the whole Tarentaise leaves at once, and a departure meets it head on. Operators publish 3h15 to 3h45 for the corridor on a peak changeover Saturday against 2h15 to 2h30 midweek, and the queue in the leaving direction builds through the morning between Moûtiers and Albertville. Les 3 Vallées recommends travelling Sunday to Sunday to avoid the jams entirely. If your flight is on a Saturday and you cannot move it, the answer is to leave before the valley wakes up rather than after breakfast.
Traffic Patterns
The RN90 between Moûtiers and Albertville is the only main road out of the Tarentaise, and in winter it is actively metered. The Savoie prefecture runs RECITA, a regulation system on the RN90 between Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice: a traffic light near Moûtiers holds traffic back so as not to saturate the valley and to keep snow clearing possible, and a pair of lights at each end of the Siaix tunnel, a passage of more than 300 m, stops vehicles halting inside it. It runs during periods of intense traffic, which in practice means the ski season. When it is active, secondary exits close and those roads are reserved for emergency vehicles. Road & Border Notes
One border, crossed on the motorway shortly before the airport, normally without a scheduled stop. Carry your passport or ID: EU and Swiss travellers are usually waved through, and non-EU passengers should have documents to hand. The Swiss motorway vignette is CHF 40 for 2026, valid 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027, with a CHF 200 fine plus the vignette for a car caught without one, and it is your carrier's cost rather than a line on your quote. From 1 November to 31 March French law requires vehicles driving to ski resorts in Savoie to be equipped with snow tyres, winter tyres or snow chains, which applies to the car collecting you as much as to the one that brought you.
