You cannot drive into Hallstatt. Nobody can. The core is barrier-controlled and closed to visitor traffic, so transfers drop at the Lahn zone by the P1 parking area, a few minutes' walk from the Marktplatz, or per your hotel's arrangement if you are staying the night. What you are walking into is the UNESCO-listed Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut cultural landscape: a village of roughly 750 residents built around a salt mine worked for some 7,000 years, taking up to 10,000 visitors a day at the height of summer.

Fuschlsee
The first lake, and the one nobody plans for. The B158 runs right along its northern shore, water so clear and still in the morning that the ridgelines double in it, with Schloss Fuschl watching from the far bank. Ten minutes out of Salzburg and the city is already a different holiday.

The Zwölferhorn cable car climbs straight from the centre, and across the water St. Wolfgang sends its cog railway up the Schafberg. A natural coffee stop with a lake at your feet.

Franz Joseph spent 60 summers here, and the Kaiservilla still holds the desk where he signed the 1914 declaration of war. The town led the Salzkammergut as European Capital of Culture in 2024 and its cafes have been feeding travellers since the Habsburgs. Your route runs through the middle of it.

Salt has been cut out of this mountain for around 7,000 years, which makes it one of the oldest working mines on earth and the reason a village exists on a ledge this narrow. A funicular lifts you from the Lahn to the Skywalk "Welterbeblick" platform, cantilevered roughly 360m above the rooftops with the lake pooling green below. Wooden slides, prehistoric tunnels and the best view in the Salzkammergut, all on one ticket - go first thing and you will have walked through the reason the place is on the UNESCO list before the day boats arrive.
