Carriers take the Lofer road as standard: out past Bad Reichenhall on the German B21, back into Austria at the Steinpass, then the B178 and B311 to Maishofen and the L111 up the Glemmtal. That is about 90 km and no Austrian motorway, so no vignette. The all-Austrian alternative, the A10 Tauern motorway to Bischofshofen and the B311 west, is about 30 km longer and the one a driver takes when the short road is blocked.
Germany's entry controls on that border are planned to continue to 15 March 2027, so carry a passport or ID card even though both ends of the drive are in Austria.
About This Transfer
Your driver meets you in Salzburg Airport arrivals, the ski bags go in once, and the next stop is your accommodation in the Glemmtal. The car leaves the airport on the B1, picks up the German B21 at the Walserberg and runs through Bad Reichenhall, crosses back into Austria at the Steinpass and follows the Saalach south through Lofer and Saalfelden to Maishofen. There it turns off the B311 onto the L111 and climbs 14.1 km up the valley to Saalbach.
The whole run is about 90 km and takes about 1h 30min in ordinary traffic. Hinterglemm is another 3.9 km and about five minutes up the same road, so tell the carrier which village you are staying in. Not one metre of the standard route is Austrian motorway.
Saalbach Hinterglemm sits at 1,003 m at the head of the Glemmtal, and the Skicircus that links it with Leogang and Fieberbrunn runs to 270 km of slopes on 70 lifts. Bad Reichenhall
The standard route runs straight through this Bavarian spa town, which sits on brine springs. The Alte Saline, the old saltworks, is where the town shows the source it was built on, and the town sells itself on its Alpensole, mountain air and spring water. It is the one stop on the drive that is not a mountain.

A show cave directly on the B311 between St. Martin and Weißbach bei Lofer, billed as the longest through-cave in the world. About 700 m of it is open to visitors, it stays at 4 to 6 degrees all year, and the walk is 392 steps and roughly 90 minutes. Ask your carrier before you book if you want it as a stop, because waiting time is priced, not assumed.

A 600 m gorge with about 80 m of climb on walkways, at Oberweißbach just off the same stretch of the B311. Its opening hours move with the weather, so check them the day before rather than turning up. This is the summer half-day on a road most people only see in ski boots.

270 km of slopes, 140 km of them blue, 112 km red and 18 km black, on 70 lifts, with more than 60 huts. One ski area covers four villages, and the Ski ALPIN CARD extends it to 408 km of slopes with the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun.
