Kaprun has two lift bases, 7 km apart
The MK Maiskogelbahn leaves from the edge of the village, at Kitzsteinhornplatz 1a. The glacier lifts, Gletscherjet 1 and the Panoramabahn, start at Kesselfallstraße 60, up a 7 km mountain road at the head of the valley. Both have free parking. Tell your carrier which one you mean, or give the hotel address, because Kaprun on its own could be either.
Since 2019/20 a continuous cable car link runs from the village via the Maiskogel to the Kitzsteinhorn, but it does not run all year. Check its hours before planning a village drop for glacier skiing.
About This Transfer
Your driver meets you in Salzburg Airport arrivals, the skis go into the back once, and the next stop is Kaprun. The car joins the A1 at the airport's own exit and turns onto the A10 Tauern motorway at Knoten Salzburg 2.7 km later, a stretch that needs no vignette. It stays on the A10 for about 45 km to Knoten Pongau near Bischofshofen, then takes the B311 west up the Salzach valley past St. Johann im Pongau, Lend and Taxenbach to Bruck.
Just past Bruck, before the road reaches Zell am See itself, the car takes the Mittersill road through Schüttdorf and turns off at the roundabout into Kaprun. The whole run is about 100 km and takes about 1h 25min in ordinary traffic. It never leaves Austria, and the Tauern tunnel section toll starts further south, at Flachau, so the vignette on the A10 is the only road charge.
Figures that circulate widely say Zell am See-Kaprun is about 80 km from the airport. That is the Lofer road: out through Bad Reichenhall on the German B21, back into Austria at the Steinpass, and down through Saalfelden. It is shorter on the map and slower on a normal day, and it crosses into Germany, where entry controls apply. Carriers keep it for days when the Tauern side is blocked.
Kaprun is where the glacier is. The Kitzsteinhorn opens for skiing on 10 October 2026, weeks before the valley resorts, and one Ski ALPIN CARD covers it together with the Maiskogel, the Schmittenhöhe above Zell am See and the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. Hohenwerfen Fortress
Hohenwerfen is a 900-year-old fortified castle, and the Werfen exit is at km 42.4 of the A10, a few minutes before the car leaves the motorway. It runs birds-of-prey flight demonstrations. On a summer transfer with time in hand it is the one detour worth adding, as long as you ask your carrier when you book, because waiting time is priced, not assumed.

A gorge cut by the glacier meltwater of the Kapruner Ache, up to 32 m deep and 320 m long, in Kaprun itself. The walkways open only in summer and there is a small gorge toll.

The village base at Kitzsteinhornplatz 1a. The Maiskogel is Kaprun's family ski area, and since 2019/20 the 3K K-onnection has linked it by cable car to the Kitzsteinhorn, so a hotel near the village base can mean skiing the glacier without taking the car up the valley. Neither lift runs all year, so check the hours outside the main season.

The glacier base at Kesselfallstraße 60 is where Gletscherjet 1 and the Panoramabahn start. From the village, cable cars climb 2,261 vertical metres to TOP OF SALZBURG at 3,029 m, the highest attraction in the province. From the village base it takes 60 to 70 minutes and 4 to 6 cable cars. The glacier cable cars run year-round for sightseeing, so a summer arrival can still end on the ice.

Kaprun is not car-free, and a transfer drives to the door. The choice that matters is which door. Hotels and apartments sit in and around the village, the MK Maiskogelbahn is on the edge of the village centre, and the glacier lifts are 7 km further up the valley at Kesselfallstraße. Give the carrier the address, and if you are heading straight to the snow, say which lift base.

Best Travel Times
Weekday arrivals run cleanest. Busy Saturdays, school holidays and heavy snow make the drive longer, by the operators' own account, and no one publishes how much. The glacier opens on 10 October, weeks before the Ski ALPIN CARD season starts on 27 November, so Kaprun has autumn arrivals the valley resorts do not. Tell the carrier the day and the flight, and it plans the drive around both.
Traffic Patterns
The motorway part is short: about 45 km of A10 to Knoten Pongau. Most of the drive is the B311 up the Salzach valley, which is the main road from the Pongau into the Pinzgau and carries everything that goes that way. It has four-lane stretches between Lend and Taxenbach and a tunnel round Schwarzach, so it moves. When it does not, the Lofer road through Bad Reichenhall is the fallback, shorter on the map but slower on a normal day.
Road & Border Notes
No border on the standard route: it stays in Austria from the airport to Kaprun. The 2.7 km of A1 from the airport to Knoten Salzburg needs no vignette; the A10 does, and the Tauern tunnel section toll is not on this route. Austria requires winter equipment in wintry conditions from 1 November to 15 April. The road up to the glacier base is steeper than the village roads, and snow chains are sometimes needed there after snowfall. The Lofer road crosses into Germany and back, and Germany's entry controls are planned to run to 15 March 2027.
