Three villages on one valley road
Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein sit along the same road, about 15 km from the first to the last, and Böckstein and Sportgastein carry on past the end of it. From the airport that is 82 km to Dorfgastein, 91 km to Bad Hofgastein, 97 km to Bad Gastein and 107 km to Sportgastein. Give your carrier the village and the street, not the valley.
The ski bus links all of it once you are there, and it is free in winter if you board with a valid ski pass or winter sports equipment.
About This Transfer
Your driver meets you in Salzburg Airport arrivals, the ski bags go in once, and the car is on the motorway inside a few minutes. The route joins the A1 at the airport's own exit, turns onto the A10 Tauern motorway at Knoten Salzburg 2.7 km later, and runs about 45 km south to Knoten Pongau near Bischofshofen. From there the B311 heads west up the Salzach valley to Lend, about 74 km into the drive, where the B167 Gasteiner Straße turns south into the Gastein valley.
That last stretch is the part the map underplays. The B167 climbs 27 km from the Salzach at Lend to Böckstein, past Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, and it is why the airport to Bad Gastein run measures about 97 km rather than the 90 km quoted for the valley's distance from Salzburg city. Reckon on about 1h 20min in ordinary traffic. The car never leaves Austria, and the Tauern tunnel section toll starts further south at Flachau, so the vignette on the A10 is the only road charge as far as Bad Gastein.
Gastein is the rare Alpine valley where the train is a serious option, and it is worth saying so straight. ÖBB Railjet and Intercity services run the Tauern Line hourly from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and reached Bad Gastein in 1 hour 21 minutes on the timetable valid to 12 December 2026, at a station with a direct overpass to the Felsentherme and the valley station of the Stubnerkogelbahn. The catch is the two ends. The train does not start at the airport: you take the number 2 bus into the city, walk to the platform and change, which made about 1 hour 45 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes to the station on that same timetable, depending on the day, and the station is still not your hotel. Austria's timetable changes on 13 December 2026, so those times are bounded by that date.
A transfer collapses all of that into one vehicle that stops at the door, with the skis, the boot bags and the toddler's car seat in it. Gastein rewards that: three ski areas on one pass, Sportgastein as the highest in Ski amadé, and thermal water in two valley spas at the end of the day. A 900-year-old fortified castle above the Salzach, at the Werfen exit at km 42.4 of the A10, about halfway through the drive. Its birds-of-prey demonstrations are part of the visit. Ask your carrier when you book if you want the detour, because waiting time is priced, not assumed.

The waterfall drops 341 m in three stages straight through the middle of Bad Gastein, under the Belle Epoque hotels. Most towns keep their waterfall out at the edge somewhere. This one is the reason the town is shaped the way it is, in tiers, which is also why the walk from the station to a hotel can be a climb.

Thermal water at over 1,000 m, directly opposite the Bad Gastein railway station. In summer, day guests park free at the Stubnerkogelbahn and cross a panoramic footbridge to the ticket office. Bad Hofgastein has its own thermal spa, the Alpentherme, about 90 km from the airport.

A radon thermal tunnel driven deep into the Radhausberg at Böckstein, at the head of the valley, where warmth, humidity and radon are used to treat rheumatic inflammatory disease. It is a medical facility rather than a spa day, and at about 100 km from the airport it is past Bad Gastein, so a carrier dropping there needs the Heilstollenstraße address.

The B167 is the valley's main road, about 18 km from Dorfgastein to Böckstein, and Sportgastein lies about 6 km beyond on the Gasteiner Alpenstraße, a toll road. A transfer can stop anywhere along either: the hotel, the station, a lift base or the treatment tunnel at Böckstein. Give the carrier the village and the street, because Gastein on its own spans 25 km of road.

Best Travel Times
Weekday arrivals run cleanest, and the main-season Saturdays in the Ski amadé calendar, 19 December 2026 to 26 March 2027, are when every valley in the Pongau changes over at once. Operators say the drive takes longer in traffic, weather and seasonal road conditions, and none of them publishes how much longer. A flight landing in daylight also helps on the B167, which is a valley road with villages on it, not a motorway.
Traffic Patterns
Most of the drive is fast road: about 45 km of A10 to Knoten Pongau, then the B311 up the Salzach past St. Johann im Pongau and the Schönberg tunnel round Schwarzach. The last 22 km are different. The B167 climbs the Gastein valley through Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein at village speeds, and it is the only road in, so an incident on it has no diversion. That is the stretch to allow for, not the motorway.
Road & Border Notes
No border on this route: it stays in Austria from arrivals to the valley. The 2.7 km of A1 from the airport to Knoten Salzburg needs no vignette, the A10 does, and the Tauern tunnel section toll starts at Flachau, south of the turn-off, so it never applies. Austria requires winter equipment in wintry conditions from 1 November to 15 April, which Gasteinertal Tourismus repeats in its own arrival advice. The Tauernbahn motorail at Böckstein crosses the main ridge southwards to Carinthia and is closed for renovation from 8 February to 9 July 2027; it is nothing to do with the run to Salzburg.

Spa and HikingSummer is the waterfall through the town, the Stubnerkogel at 2,246 m with its 140 m suspension bridge, and thermal water at over 1,000 m in the Felsentherme. The hiking bus covers the valley from St. Johann to Sportgastein. The drive is at its ordinary time, and Hohenwerfen is on the way in.
