Leave about 4h 10min before the flight

The drive is about 1h 40min in free-flowing traffic, and Grenoble Airport recommends arriving at check-in 2h 30min before departure. That makes 4h 10min before any traffic. Check-in closes 40 to 60 minutes before the flight, depending on the airline.

On a winter Saturday allow 4h 40min to 5h 10min, or more.

About This Transfer

Your driver collects you at the door in Alpe d'Huez, the skis and cases go into the back once, and the car starts down the D211: 21 bends, counted from 1 at the top to 21 at the bottom, and about 20 minutes to Le Bourg-d'Oisans. The D1091 follows the Romanche down to Vizille, the N85 and the A480 carry you past Grenoble, and the A48 runs north to exit 9, where the D119 covers the last 11 km to the terminal. The whole run is about 106 km and takes about 1h 40min in free-flowing traffic.

Plan the day backwards from the flight. The airport recommends arriving at check-in 2h 30min before departure, so the car leaves the resort about 4h 10min ahead of the flight, and earlier on a holiday Saturday or after snowfall: the valley road is shared with the rest of the Oisans, and the climb is cleared regularly but remains a mountain road.

The airport is not in Grenoble, and that decides the way back by bus. No railway reaches the resort or the airport, so the public route is the winter express bus down to Grenoble, about 1h45, then the airport bus from the station, about 40 minutes, with a wait between the two.

The same drive in the other direction, and every other run from the terminal, is on our Grenoble Airport transfers page. The French Alps ski transfers guide covers the season, and if next winter's flight is still open, our Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry comparison weighs the airports resort by resort.

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

Midweek flights are the easy ones. The holiday Saturdays of winter 2027 are 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March, and on those days the whole Oisans leaves by one valley road. On a changeover Saturday, take the earliest pickup the flight allows. The Christmas holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, and Tomorrowland Winter ends on 27 March 2027.

Traffic Patterns

The descent is about 20 minutes in free-flowing traffic, and the D1091 down the Romanche to Vizille is the stretch the Oisans resorts share. Operators who drive the route allow half an hour to an hour or more on winter Saturdays, and live road conditions for the Isère are on itinisere.fr. Past Grenoble the A480 has three lanes each way over 7 km and a 70 km/h limit through the city; the A48 and the D119 beyond it are the easy part.

Road & Border Notes

The drive stays in France. Going back, the toll ticket is taken at the Voreppe barrier and paid at the Rives exit: €3.90 for a car, €5.70 for a van between 2 m and 3 m high. The winter-equipment rule applies from 1 November to 31 March on the climb and down the Romanche valley as far as Séchilienne. The Gavet bridge on the D1091 is being rebuilt, with the new bridge due in the second half of 2026.

Carrier Tip

Give the flight time and let the carrier work back from it: about 1h 40min of driving plus the airport's 2h 30min. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, because they decide the vehicle. Check the airline's own check-in deadline too: it closes 40 to 60 minutes before the flight, depending on the airline.

Price & Vehicle Options

A private transfer from Alpe d'Huez to Grenoble Airport costs from around €300 one way, priced per vehicle rather than per person. On this route a saloon and a minivan start within €5 of each other, because the local ski operators publish the 8-seat van as their base vehicle: three people in a saloon pay €100 each, eight in a minivan about €38 each. Estate cars and minibuses are quoted on request.

Important Information

How early to leave

About 4h 10min before the flight: about 1h 40min of driving in free-flowing traffic plus the 2h 30min Grenoble Airport recommends at check-in. Check-in itself closes 40 to 60 minutes before departure, depending on the airline. On a winter Saturday allow 4h 40min to 5h 10min, or more.

Where the car drops you

The airport has a departures terminal and an arrivals terminal, and passengers may not be dropped in front of the terminal building. The car stops in car park P2, where the first 10 minutes are free.

Winter equipment, 1 November to 31 March

On the whole descent and down the Romanche valley as far as Séchilienne, a vehicle must have winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels. Tyres marked M+S alone have not counted since 1 November 2024. The tourist office says the road is regularly cleared of snow and that checks are frequent.

Tolls

€3.90 for a car and €5.70 for a van between 2 m and 3 m high, on the tariff in force since 1 February 2026. In this direction the ticket is taken at the Voreppe barrier and paid at the Rives exit. Most carriers include it in the quote.

Skis, boards and luggage

Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases.

Child seats

Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. — London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. — Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. — Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria
