Winter equipment is the law here from 1 November to 31 March

The road from the airport to Grenoble is outside the zone. From Séchilienne, in the Romanche valley, to the top of the climb, every vehicle must have winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels. The tourist office says checks on the 21 bends are frequent. On a private transfer the equipment is the carrier's job: ask it to confirm when you book.

Tyres marked M+S alone stopped counting on 1 November 2024.

About This Transfer

Your driver meets you in the arrivals terminal at Grenoble Airport, the skis and cases go into the back once, and the car takes the D119 to the A48 at Rives, about 10 minutes away. The motorway runs to Grenoble and down the west side of the city as the A480, the N85 leads to Vizille, and the D1091 follows the Romanche valley up to Le Bourg-d'Oisans. From there the D211 climbs 21 numbered bends to the resort at 1,860 m. The whole run is about 106 km and takes about 1h 40min in free-flowing traffic.

The airport is not in Grenoble. It stands at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 km north-west of the city by road, which is why the 60 km the resort publishes from Grenoble becomes about 106 km from the terminal. A little over a third of the drive is motorway.

The drive is not toll-free, though route planners often report it so. A car pays €3.90 each way, one ticket taken at Rives and paid at the Voreppe barrier, and most carriers quote it inside the price. No railway serves the airport or the resort: the scheduled public route is the airport bus to Grenoble station, about 40 minutes, then in winter an express bus up to the resort in about 1h45, before any wait.

This is the nearest airport to the resort, about half an hour closer than Lyon. If the flight is not booked yet, our Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry comparison weighs the airports resort by resort, and the table of every Alpine ski resort by nearest airport sets the distances side by side. The French Alps ski transfers guide covers the season, and every other run from the terminal is on our Grenoble Airport transfers page.

Route Overview

Pickup: Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport (GNB)

The airport is at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 km from Grenoble, with an arrivals terminal and a departures terminal. Your driver meets you in the arrivals terminal, or at the car, as the carrier confirms. Cars may not stop in front of the building: loading is in car park P2, where the first 10 minutes are free.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • Meet in the arrivals terminal, name board ready
  • • Flight monitoring, so a late landing does not lose you the car
  • • Loading in car park P2, first 10 minutes free
  • • Ski and board bags declared at booking, vehicle sized to match

Drop-off: Alpe d'Huez, Oisans, Isère

A transfer drives to hotels, residences and chalets across the resort. The road arrives through Vieil Alpe; Place Paganon, the Tourist Office, Les Bergers and L'Éclose lie beyond it, and Huez village is a separate stop on the climb itself. Give the residence name and the district, not just Alpe d'Huez.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • Vieil Alpe, where the road arrives
  • • Place Paganon and the Tourist Office
  • • Les Bergers and L'Éclose
  • • Huez village, on the climb below the resort

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

Midweek runs cleanest. The French winter school holidays run from 6 February to 8 March 2027 in three zones, and their Saturdays, 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March, are changeover days on one valley road. Grenoble is in zone A, 13 February to 1 March. The Christmas holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, and Tomorrowland Winter takes the resort from 20 to 27 March 2027.

Traffic Patterns

The D119 and the A48 are the easy part. Past Grenoble the A480 has three lanes each way over 7 km and a 70 km/h limit through the city. The valley is where a Saturday is lost, because the D1091 serves the whole Oisans and its resorts share it up the Romanche from Vizille. Operators who drive the route allow half an hour to an hour or more on winter Saturdays, and live road conditions for the Isère are on itinisere.fr.

Road & Border Notes

The drive stays in France. The toll is €3.90 each way for a car and €5.70 for a van between 2 m and 3 m high, paid once, between Rives and the Voreppe barrier; nothing is charged after it. From 1 November to 31 March the winter-equipment zone starts at Séchilienne and covers the climb. The Gavet bridge on the D1091 is being rebuilt, with the new bridge due in the second half of 2026 and, by the road authority's account, little effect on traffic.

Carrier Tip

Give the district and the residence name: Huez village is a different stop from the resort, partway up the climb. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, because they decide the vehicle, and ask the carrier to confirm 3PMSF tyres or chains for your date. If you land on a Saturday, book early: one published Saturday fare for this route is about a third more than its weekday fare.

Price & Vehicle Options

A private transfer from Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez costs from around €300 one way, priced per vehicle rather than per person. On this route a saloon and a minivan start within €5 of each other, because the local ski operators publish the 8-seat van as their base vehicle: three people in a saloon pay €100 each, eight in a minivan about €38 each. Estate cars and minibuses are quoted on request.

Important Information

Meeting your driver at Grenoble Airport

The airport has an arrivals terminal and a departures terminal. Your carrier confirms whether the driver meets you inside the arrivals terminal or at the car. Nobody may stop in front of the building: cars load in car park P2, where the first 10 minutes are free. Give your carrier the flight number so it can track the landing.

The airport is not in Grenoble

It is at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 km north-west of the city by road, and no railway serves it. A bus runs from the departures terminal to Grenoble station in about 40 minutes. A transfer to Alpe d'Huez passes Grenoble on the motorway.

Winter equipment, 1 November to 31 March

In the Romanche valley from Séchilienne and on the whole climb, a vehicle must have winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels. Tyres marked M+S alone have not counted since 1 November 2024. The tourist office says the road is regularly cleared of snow and that checks are frequent.

Tolls

€3.90 each way for a car and €5.70 for a van between 2 m and 3 m high, on the tariff in force since 1 February 2026. It is one ticket on the A48, taken at Rives and paid at the Voreppe barrier. Most carriers include it in the quote.

Skis, boards and luggage

Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases.

Child seats

Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez?

About 1 hour 40 minutes in free-flowing traffic, for about 106 km: the D119 to the A48 at Rives, the motorway to Grenoble and the A480 past the city, the N85 to Vizille, the D1091 up the Romanche valley to Le Bourg-d'Oisans, then the 21 bends of the D211. Times as short as 1h15 are published, and the routed drive is longer than that. Holiday Saturdays and snow on the climb add to it.

How much does a private transfer from Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez cost?

On TransferBnB a private transfer starts from around €300 per vehicle for a saloon and €305 for a minivan, one way; estate cars and minibuses are quoted on request. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so eight people in a minivan pay about €38 each. Verified carriers send quotes for your date.

Is there a bus or a train from Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez?

No railway serves the airport or the resort. A bus links the airport's departures terminal with Grenoble station in about 40 minutes, and in winter an express bus climbs from Grenoble to Alpe d'Huez in about 1h45, twice a day: about 2h 25min on the move, with a change and a wait in between. Shared ski coaches also run from the terminal. A private transfer takes about 1h 40min door to door with no change.

Is Grenoble Airport actually in Grenoble?

No. Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport is at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 km north-west of Grenoble by road, about 35 minutes. That is why Alpe d'Huez is 60 km from Grenoble by the resort's own figure and about 106 km from the airport. A transfer to the resort passes the city on the motorway.

Which airport is closest to Alpe d'Huez?

Grenoble Alpes Isère, about 106 km and 1h 40min by road. Chambéry is about 132 km and 2 hours, Lyon about 153 km and 2h 10min, and Geneva about 210 km and 2h 50min. Lyon has the wider choice of flights; Grenoble is about half an hour closer on the road.

How much are the motorway tolls from Grenoble Airport to Alpe d'Huez?

€3.90 each way for a car, on the tariff in force since 1 February 2026: one ticket on the A48, from Rives to the Voreppe barrier. A van between 2 m and 3 m high pays €5.70. There is no toll after Voreppe. On a private transfer most carriers include the toll in the quote.

Do I need winter tyres or snow chains to reach Alpe d'Huez?

Yes, from 1 November to 31 March. In the Romanche valley from Séchilienne and on the climb, a vehicle must have winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels; tyres marked M+S alone stopped counting on 1 November 2024. The tourist office says checks are frequent. On a private transfer the carrier equips the vehicle; ask it to confirm when you book.

How many bends are there on the road up to Alpe d'Huez?

There are 21, numbered from 21 at the bottom to 1 at the top, over 13.8 km at an average gradient of 8.1%. The road, the D211, starts at 737 m outside Le Bourg-d'Oisans and reaches the resort at 1,860 m; by car it takes about 20 minutes in free-flowing traffic. It was the first summit finish in Tour de France history, in 1952.

Which Saturdays are busiest on the road to Alpe d'Huez?

The holiday Saturdays. In winter 2027 the French school holidays run from 6 February to 8 March in three zones, which makes 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March the changeover Saturdays; the Christmas holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. No authority publishes a delay in minutes for the valley road. A midweek transfer avoids the question.

When is Tomorrowland Winter 2027 in Alpe d'Huez?

From 20 to 27 March 2027, with nearly 22,000 festival-goers expected in the resort. Book the transfer early for that week.

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. — London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. — Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. — Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria
