Winter equipment is the law here from 1 November to 31 March

From Séchilienne, in the Romanche valley, to the top of the climb, every vehicle must have winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels. The tourist office says checks on the 21 bends are frequent. On a private transfer the equipment is the carrier's job: ask it to confirm when you book.

Tyres marked M+S alone stopped counting on 1 November 2024.

About This Transfer

Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Lyon Airport, the skis and cases go into the back once, and within minutes the car is on the A432 heading south for the A43. It takes the A48 to Grenoble, runs down the west side of the city on the A480, and leaves the motorway for the N85 to Vizille and the D1091 up the Romanche valley to Le Bourg-d'Oisans. From there the D211 climbs 21 numbered bends to the resort at 1,860 m. The whole run is about 153 km and takes about 2h 10min in free-flowing traffic.

The 168 km the resort itself publishes is measured from Lyon, the city. The airport sits 25 km east of it, and from the terminal the drive is about 15 km shorter. About 90 km of it is motorway.

The toll is €13.70 each way for a car: one ticket, taken at the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier barrier and paid at Voreppe, and most carriers quote it inside the price. No train reaches Alpe d'Huez. The nearest station is Grenoble, about an hour from the airport's own TGV station by direct train, and the winter express bus up from there takes about 1h45 before any wait.

Grenoble's own airport is nearer, by about half an hour, and our table of every Alpine ski resort by nearest airport sets the four choices side by side. The French Alps ski transfers guide covers the season, and every other run from the terminal is on our Lyon Airport transfers page.

The 21 bends

The D211 leaves the valley at 737 m and counts its bends down from 21 at the bottom to 1 at the top, 13.8 km at an average of 8.1%, through La Garde and the village of Huez. It was the first summit finish in Tour de France history, won by Fausto Coppi in 1952, and in 2026 the race finished in the resort twice. From the back seat it is about 20 minutes.

Route Overview

Pickup: Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS)

The airport is at Colombier-Saugnieu, 25 km east of Lyon, and since 1 April 2026 every flight uses Terminal 1. Your driver meets you in the Terminal 1 arrivals hall, or at the car, as the carrier confirms. The drop-off bays with their 10 free minutes are reserved for private cars; the airport keeps a separate car park for pre-booked drivers.

Popular Pickup Points:

• Meet in the Terminal 1 arrivals hall, name board ready
• Flight monitoring, so a late landing does not lose you the car
• Pickup at the airport's TGV station if you arrive by train
• Ski and board bags declared at booking, vehicle sized to match

Drop-off: Alpe d'Huez, Oisans, Isère

A transfer drives to hotels, residences and chalets across the resort. The road arrives through Vieil Alpe; Place Paganon, the Tourist Office, Les Bergers and L'Éclose lie beyond it, and Huez village is a separate stop on the climb itself. Give the residence name and the district, not just Alpe d'Huez.

Popular Drop-off Points:

• Vieil Alpe, where the road arrives
• Place Paganon and the Tourist Office
• Les Bergers and L'Éclose
• Huez village, on the climb below the resort

Best Travel Times

Midweek runs cleanest. The French winter school holidays run from 6 February to 8 March 2027 in three zones, and their Saturdays, 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March, are changeover days on one valley road. Lyon and Grenoble share zone A, 13 February to 1 March. The Christmas holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, and Tomorrowland Winter takes the resort from 20 to 27 March 2027.

🚦

Traffic Patterns

The motorway is the easy part: about 90 km of it, with three lanes each way over 7 km past Grenoble and a 70 km/h limit on that urban stretch. The roadworks there ended in July 2026. The valley is where a Saturday is lost, because the D1091 serves the whole Oisans and its resorts share it up the Romanche from Vizille. One operator who drives the route allows at least an hour more on winter Saturdays and Sundays, and live road conditions for the Isère are on itinisere.fr.

🛣️

Road & Border Notes

The drive stays in France. The toll is €13.70 each way for a car and €21.70 for a van between 2 m and 3 m high, paid once, between the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier and Voreppe barriers; nothing is charged after Grenoble. From 1 November to 31 March the winter-equipment zone starts at Séchilienne and covers the climb. The Gavet bridge on the D1091 is being rebuilt, with the new bridge due in the second half of 2026 and, by the road authority's account, little effect on traffic.

💡

Carrier Tip

Give the district and the residence name: Huez village is a different stop from the resort, partway up the climb. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, because they decide the vehicle, and ask the carrier to confirm 3PMSF tyres or chains for your date. If you land in the evening, say so: on the current timetable the last direct train from the airport station to Grenoble leaves at 20:10 on Saturdays and no later than 22:08 on any other day, and the car does not depend on it.

Important Information

Meeting your driver at Lyon Airport
Every flight has used Terminal 1 since 1 April 2026, so there is one arrivals hall to find. Your carrier confirms whether the driver meets you in the hall or at the car, and pre-booked drivers have their own car park. The drop-off bays are for private cars: a friend collecting you gets 10 minutes free, then pays €2.20 for the eleventh minute and €0.60 for each minute after it. Give your carrier the flight number so it can track the landing.
Landing late
On the current timetable, to 12 December 2026, the last direct train from the airport station to Grenoble leaves at 20:10 on Saturdays and no later than 22:08 on any other day, and the winter express bus from Grenoble to the resort makes two round trips a day. A pre-booked car does not depend on either.
Winter equipment, 1 November to 31 March
In the Romanche valley from Séchilienne and on the whole climb, a vehicle must have winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels. Tyres marked M+S alone have not counted since 1 November 2024. The tourist office says the road is regularly cleared of snow and that checks are frequent.
Tolls
€13.70 each way for a car and €21.70 for a van between 2 m and 3 m high, on the tariff in force since 1 February 2026. It is one ticket, taken at the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier barrier and paid at Voreppe. Most carriers include it in the quote.
Skis, boards and luggage
Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases.
Child seats
Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

On TransferBnB a private transfer starts from around €335 per vehicle for a saloon and €415 for a minivan, one way; estate cars and minibuses are quoted on request. From 20 to 27 March 2027, with nearly 22,000 festival-goers expected in the resort. Book the transfer early for that week.

What our customers say

Thomas B. — London, UK

Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.

Marta R. — Munich, Germany

Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.

Olivier D. — Lyon, France

Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.

Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland

Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.

Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.

Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria

I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
