About This Transfer
Your driver meets you at Terminal 1 arrivals at Lyon-Saint Exupéry, the skis and cases go into the back once, and the car heads east on the A43 for Chambéry. From there it follows the A430 to Albertville and the N90 expressway up the Tarentaise to Moûtiers, leaves at exit 40 and climbs the D117 through Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Les Menuires to Val Thorens, at 2,300 m. The whole run is about 199 km and takes about 2h 30min in free-flowing traffic.
Lyon is not the nearest airport. The resort's tourist office puts Chambéry at 122 km, Grenoble at 194, Lyon at 199 and Geneva at 201. Chambéry is 77 km closer; the other three are within 7 km of each other. Lyon's case is the road: all but the last 37 km is motorway or expressway.
The tolls are €19.50 each way for a car, paid in two stages, at Chambéry Nord and at Sainte-Hélène, and published private fares normally include them. From 1 November to 31 March every vehicle in Savoie must carry chains or run on four winter tyres marked 3PMSF. Val Thorens adds a rule of its own: a municipal decree lets the police turn back an unequipped vehicle on the climb whenever the resorts are open and conditions require it.
Val Thorens is semi-pedestrian. A vehicle may stop at the door to unload, and in winter anyone who keeps a car there must use the resort's car parks; a transfer drops you and leaves. For every run from the terminal, see our Lyon Airport transfers page. Our French Alps ski transfers guide covers the valleys and their changeover days, and the nearest-airport table sets every Alpine resort against its airports.

Sights Along the Route
Your driver covers the distance while you enjoy the scenery.
Saint-Martin-de-Belleville
A village resort on the road up from Moûtiers. If part of the group is staying lower in the valley, the car can drop them here on the way.
Saint-Martin-de-Belleville →Les Menuires
The next resort up the same road, and the last before Val Thorens. Exit 40 at Moûtiers is signed for all of them: Saint-Jean-de-Belleville, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Les Menuires, Val Thorens.
Les Menuires →Val Thorens
At 2,300 m, the highest ski resort in Europe by the ski area's own description. The lifts run from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, two weeks either side of the linked 3 Vallées season.

Pickup: Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS)
The airport is east of Lyon, 25 km from the city centre, with one terminal in use, Terminal 1, and a TGV station. Your driver meets you at Terminal 1 arrivals or at the car, as the carrier confirms: the airport keeps a separate car park for pre-booked chauffeur-driven vehicles.
Popular Pickup Points:
Drop-off: Val Thorens, Belleville valley, Savoie
Val Thorens restricts street parking in winter, but a vehicle may make a minute stop in front of your accommodation to unload, and that is all a transfer needs. If the apartment is not ready, the bus station at Place des Arolles has luggage storage, and free shuttles serve every part of the resort. Give the residence name and the full address, not just Val Thorens.

Local Route Knowledge
Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.
Best Travel Times
Midweek runs cleanest. The French winter holidays are staggered over three zones from 6 February to 8 March 2027, which makes five changeover Saturdays in a row: 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March. The Christmas holidays start on Saturday 19 December 2026. If the flight lets you, arrive on a Sunday or a weekday.
Traffic Patterns
The pinch is the N90 between Albertville and Moûtiers. The road authority counts about 25,000 vehicles a day there on average and up to 70,000 on some winter Saturdays, nearly three times as many. A regulation light a little before Moûtiers then holds traffic so the valley does not seize, and the prefecture's advice is to stay on the N90 and not follow a sat-nav onto side roads. On Saturday 14 February 2026 the national forecast was red toward the resorts, and drivers were told to avoid the A43 from Lyon to Chambéry from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Road & Border Notes
The drive stays in France. Tolls are €19.50 each way for a car and €31.30 for a taller van in toll class 2; the car passes four toll stations, Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, Chambéry Nord, Chignin and Sainte-Hélène, and pays at the second and the fourth. The N90 is free. From 1 November to 31 March all of Savoie requires chains or snow socks for two driving wheels, or four winter tyres marked 3PMSF; tyres marked only M+S stopped counting in November 2024. On the climb, a municipal decree lets the police refuse an unequipped vehicle at weekends once the road control centre raises its alert level, and midweek on an orange snow warning. They may also turn back a car on snow socks alone.
Carrier Tip
Give the residence name, not just Val Thorens, and say whether the apartment will be ready: if it will not, ask for the drop at Place des Arolles, where the bus station stores luggage. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, because they decide the vehicle. And if you drive yourself one day, ignore a sat-nav that offers the D96 out of Moûtiers: the resort's booking office calls it very narrow and regularly closed.

Price & Vehicle Options
A private transfer from Lyon Airport to Val Thorens costs from around €340 one way, priced per vehicle rather than per person. On this route the published fares barely change with the size of the vehicle, so a saloon and a minivan start at the same figure: three people in a saloon pay about €113 each, six in a minivan about €57 each.
| Vehicle | Seats | Luggage | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan / Saloon | 1-3 | 2-3 bags | from €340 | Couples, solo skiers, light luggage |
| Minivan / Van | 5-8 | 8 bags + ski bags | from €340 | Families, ski groups, hard ski cases |
| Minibus | 9+ | group | Quote on request | Large groups, club trips |
Prices are per vehicle, one way and indicative. Verified carriers quote for your date, and Saturdays and peak dates are priced higher than a quiet weekday. No published minibus fare exists for this route that we would stand behind, so that step comes by quote.
