The best airport for the French Alps depends on your resort. Geneva has by far the most flights and is nearest to Chamonix, Megève, Morzine and Flaine. Chambéry is closest to the Three Valleys and the Tarentaise, on a short weekend schedule, and Grenoble to Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Lyon is the year-round fallback, level with Geneva on the drive to the Three Valleys.

This guide weighs Geneva, Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, Chambéry and Grenoble on the drive, the flights, winter reliability and the kerb. The per-vehicle price ladders for every corridor sit in our complete French Alps ski transfer guide.

Read the passenger column first. Geneva handled 17.8 million passengers in 2025, Lyon 10.7 million, Grenoble 261,000 and Chambéry 191,000. Two are year-round hubs; two are winter airports built around the weekend.

Which airport is closest to your French resort?

Chambéry for the Tarentaise, Grenoble for the Isère, Geneva for the rest. Courchevel is 95 km and 1h15 from Chambéry on the resort's own figures, against 179 km from Geneva, and Grenoble reaches Alpe d'Huez in 1h36. Geneva is nearest to Chamonix, Megève, Flaine, Morzine and the rest of the Portes du Soleil, all within 90 km; our nearest-airport table for every Alpine ski resort covers the whole range.

Notes: a dash means the source does not state it. Where two sources disagree the row uses the resort's own or the area figure. Chamonix from Geneva is 99 km, 1h06 on skiresort.com. Morzine's own site gives 75 km, about 1h15 from Geneva. Flaine from Geneva is 60 km on skiresort.com. Courchevel from Chambéry is 120 km, 1h37 on skiresort.com against 95 km, 1h15 on courchevel.com, and from Lyon 197 km, 2h21 against 176 km, 2h00. Chambéry's own site also gives 1h15 to Courchevel and 1h30 to Alpe d'Huez. Lyon to Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes are the routed free-flow figures on our Lyon Airport route pages.

Read the Three Valleys rows across. Most guides quote Lyon as the longer transfer there, but courchevel.com puts Courchevel at 176 km and 2h00 from Lyon against 179 km and 2h00 from Geneva, and the resort figures give Méribel 197 km against 199 km and Val Thorens 199 km against 201 km.

For the Three Valleys, Lyon and Geneva are the same drive.

Geneva Airport: the case for the big hub

Geneva is the default, and the flights are the reason. Geneva Airport handled 17,848,370 passengers in 2025 and lists 149 direct destinations, by its own count, all year round. It is the big hub with the longer drive, the part Munich plays in our Austrian Alps airport guide.

Chamonix is 88 km and about 1h15 away, and Morzine's tourist office puts Morzine at 75 km. The catch is the Tarentaise. Val d'Isère, Tignes, Les Arcs and La Plagne sit between 197 and 223 km from Geneva, and Val d'Isère and Tignes take 2h48 on the resort figures. That drive is the price of the flight choice.

The railway station in the terminal is a five-minute walk from Arrivals, but no train from it reaches Chamonix, Morzine or the Tarentaise without a change and a bus. Shuttles, taxis and the city ticket are in our Geneva Airport transfer guide.

Should you fly to Chambéry for the Three Valleys and the Tarentaise?

Yes, if a flight fits your dates.

Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc is the closest airport to the Three Valleys and the Tarentaise: Courchevel is 95 km and 1h15 away on courchevel.com's figures, 45 minutes less than from Geneva, and Les Arcs in Paradiski is 127 km. The airport's own figure to Val d'Isère is 1h45, not the 2 hours to 2h15 that circulates widely.

It is not open only on Saturdays. In 2025/26 scheduled flights ran on Saturdays and Sundays to 9 destinations and charters on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays to 10, from 13 December 2025 into April 2026, per the airport's destination list, and every one of them was in the UK. The terminal opens 08:00 to 18:00, with Saturday hours set by the flight schedule. No 2026/27 list was published by 1 October 2026.

The approach is the other constraint. Key.Aero reports that the surrounding mountains oblige crews to take supplementary training, in a simulator or in visual conditions at the airfield, before night flights or below a 3,500 ft ceiling or 500 m visibility, and that rapidly changing mountain weather brings flight delays and cancellations in winter. Most guides call Chambéry less reliable than Geneva and Lyon. No airport publishes a diversion rate, so this guide prints none.

There is no railway station and no public transport link. The free car park and drop-off area state no time limit.

Is Lyon worth it for the French Alps?

Yes, as a year-round fallback with real flight choice. Lyon handled 10.7 million passengers in 2025, on VINCI Airports' traffic figures, and Lyon-Saint-Exupéry has more than 140 direct destinations, according to its operator. It is the same drive as Geneva to the Three Valleys and about half an hour closer to Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Our Lyon Airport transfer page has the routes, Lyon Airport to Courchevel and Lyon Airport to Val Thorens among them.

The TGV station is a few minutes' walk from the terminals, and Rhônexpress reaches Part-Dieu in under 30 minutes. No train from the airport reaches a resort, the station has no ticket counter, and the rail timings to the resorts that circulate widely have no source we could find. The Three Valleys sit above Moûtiers and Paradiski above Bourg-Saint-Maurice, so any rail plan ends on a mountain road. A driver collecting you at the drop-off lanes has 10 minutes free, then pays €2.20 for the next minute and €0.60 a minute after that.

Which airport for Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes: Grenoble or Lyon?

Grenoble, then Lyon.

Grenoble Alpes-Isère is 107 km and 1h36 from Alpe d'Huez and 111 km and 1h37 from Les Deux Alpes; Lyon Airport is about 153 km and 2h10, and about 162 km and 2h15, in free-flowing traffic. Chambéry is 132 km and 1h50 from Alpe d'Huez. Most guides quote 1h40 to 2 hours from Grenoble and 2 hours to 2h30 from Lyon. The ranking holds: the Lyon figures sit inside that range and the Grenoble figures just under it.

Grenoble is a seasonal winter airport with a small terminal and 11 destinations on its home page. No 2026/27 list, Saturday rule or terminal hours had been published when we checked.

If no Grenoble flight fits, Lyon is about 35 to 40 minutes further out. The from-prices are on our Lyon Airport to Alpe d'Huez and Lyon Airport to Les Deux Alpes pages.

Do you go through Swiss border control from Geneva to France?

Yes, on an international arrival. You collect your bags, clear Swiss customs, go up to the Check-in level and follow the France Sector signs. Moving between the sectors needs a valid flight ticket for the same day, plus or minus one day, and by road the France Sector is reached only via the customs road from Ferney-Voltaire, per Geneva Airport.

The airport names no meeting point for transfers on either side. Kiss and Fly is closed to collections: passenger pick-up is not permitted there, with no parking and no waiting. Official taxis wait at the rank outside the Arrivals level.

Agree the meeting point and the sector with your driver before you fly.

What does changeover Saturday do to the choice?

Saturday is the heaviest day on the Alpine roads. Bison Futé, the French traffic forecast, rates Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes orange for departures on Saturday 19 December 2026, red on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 December, and red both ways on Saturday 2 January 2027. The calendar ends on 7 January 2027 and names no road. Last February, every departure Saturday was orange or red.

Chambéry's flights land on those same weekends; Geneva and Lyon are scheduled hubs, so there the arrival day is yours to choose. If you drive yourself, the Loi Montagne winter-equipment duty is enforceable only where signs announce it, no 2026/27 dates were published by 1 October 2026, and Haute-Savoie fines €135. A private transfer leaves the tyres and chains to the carrier.

What does the transfer cost from each airport in 2026/27?

From €150 per vehicle from Geneva and from €335 from Lyon, one way. Compare per vehicle, not per seat: the per-head shared-seat prices that circulate widely for Geneva price a different product, and TransferBnB sells no shared seat.

RouteFrom (per vehicle, one way)Road

Geneva to Courchevelfrom €225~179 km, ~2h 15min
Geneva to Méribelfrom €225~180 km, ~2h 30min
Geneva to Les Arcsfrom €235~200 km, ~2h 30min

Lyon to Courchevelfrom €375~186 km, ~2h 20min
Lyon to Val Thorensfrom €340~199 km, ~2h 30min

Divide by your group. Four people sharing the from-€225 vehicle to Courchevel pay about €56 each, and four to Chamonix at from €150 pay €37.50 each; the final price comes from carrier offers on the route page. For what a family of four pays by transfer, hire car, train and bus, see what a family really pays for a ski transfer.

We have no Chambéry or Grenoble price, and we will not invent one.

Book your French Alps transfer

Pick the airport your flight favours; the transfer closes the distance. Compare offers from verified carriers on the Geneva Airport transfer page for Chamonix, Courchevel, Méribel, Les Arcs, Tignes and Val d'Isère, or the Lyon Airport transfer page for Alpe d'Huez, Les Deux Alpes, Courchevel and Val Thorens, and your carrier tracks your flight so a late landing does not lose the ride. The four-vehicle price ladders for every corridor are in our complete French Alps ski transfer guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which airport is best for the French Alps?

It depends on the resort. Geneva has the most flights, runs all year and is nearest to Chamonix, Megève, Morzine and Flaine. Chambéry is closest to the Three Valleys and the Tarentaise but flies mainly at winter weekends, and Grenoble is closest to Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Lyon is the year-round fallback, level with Geneva on the drive to the Three Valleys.

Is Geneva or Chambéry better for the Three Valleys?

If a Chambéry flight fits your dates, take it; if not, Geneva costs about 45 minutes more on the road.

Is Chambéry Airport only open on Saturdays?

No. In winter 2025/26 Chambéry had scheduled flights on Saturdays and Sundays and charters on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 13 December 2025 into April 2026, with the terminal open 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturday hours set by the flight schedule.
