About This Transfer

Your driver meets you in the arrivals terminal at Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport, the skis and cases go into the back once, and the car takes the D119 to the A48 and turns south for Grenoble. It crosses the city, follows the A41 up the Grésivaudan, joins the A43 and the A430 to Albertville and runs up the N90 expressway to Moûtiers. There it leaves at exit 40 and climbs the D117 through Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Les Menuires to Val Thorens, at 2,300 m. The whole run is about 188 km and takes about 2h 25min in free-flowing traffic.

The airport is not in Grenoble. It is at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 km north-west of the city by road, which is why the 137 km and 1h 45min that some guides quote for this transfer are too short: they are measured from the city.

Grenoble is not the nearest airport to Val Thorens either. The resort's tourist office, on its own measure, puts Chambéry at 122 km, Grenoble at 194, Lyon at 199 and Geneva at 201. Chambéry is 72 km closer, about 45 minutes less in the car; the other three are within 7 km of each other. The case for Grenoble is the flight: the airport lists eleven scheduled destinations, eight of them in Great Britain, and if yours is one of them the drive is no longer than from Lyon or Geneva.

The tolls are €14.40 each way for a car, and from the Savoie boundary on, between 1 November and 31 March, the vehicle must carry chains or run on four winter tyres marked 3PMSF. For every run from the terminal, see our Grenoble Airport transfers page. Our guide to which airport to fly into for the French Alps sets Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry side by side, and the French Alps ski transfers guide covers the valleys and their changeover days.

Route Overview

Pickup: Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport (GNB)

The airport has an arrivals terminal and a departures terminal, at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs. No car may stop in front of the terminal: the airport's drop-off area is the P2 car park, where the first 10 minutes are free. Your driver meets you in the arrivals terminal and walks you to the car.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • Meet in the arrivals terminal, car in the P2 car park
  • • Flight monitoring, so a late landing does not lose you the car
  • • Any day of the week; the scheduled shared coach runs on Saturdays
  • • Ski and board bags declared at booking, vehicle sized to match

Drop-off: Val Thorens, Belleville valley, Savoie

Val Thorens restricts street parking in winter, but a vehicle may make a minute stop in front of your accommodation to unload, and that is all a transfer needs. If the apartment is not ready, the bus station at Place des Arolles stores luggage at €4 a piece, and free shuttles serve every part of the resort. Give the residence name and the full address, not just Val Thorens.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • Hotels, residences and chalets in Val Thorens, at the door
  • • Place des Arolles bus station, with luggage storage
  • • Les Menuires, on the same road
  • • Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, lower in the valley

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

Midweek runs cleanest. The French winter holidays are staggered over three zones from 6 February to 8 March 2027, which makes five changeover Saturdays in a row: 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March. The Christmas holidays start on Saturday 19 December 2026. A private transfer runs on whichever day the flight lands; the scheduled shared coach the airport lists reaches Val Thorens on Saturdays, from 12 December 2026 to 3 April 2027.

Traffic Patterns

The pinch is the N90 between Albertville and Moûtiers. The road authority counts about 25,000 vehicles a day there on average and up to 70,000 on some winter Saturdays, nearly three times as many. A regulation light a little before Moûtiers then holds traffic so the valley does not seize, and the prefecture's advice is to stay on the N90 and not follow a sat-nav onto side roads. Before that comes Grenoble. The quickest free-flow line runs through the city centre between the A48 and the A41; the motorway bypass is about 12 km longer and under 10 minutes slower on an empty road, and your carrier picks between them on the day.

Road & Border Notes

The drive stays in France. Tolls are €14.40 each way for a car and €21.00 for a taller van in toll class 2, paid in two stages: €3.90 on the A48 at Voreppe and €10.50 at Sainte-Hélène for the stretch from Crolles. The N90 is free. The winter-equipment rule starts where the A41 enters Savoie, a little before the A43: from 1 November to 31 March the whole department requires chains or snow socks for two driving wheels, or four winter tyres marked 3PMSF. On the climb, a municipal decree lets the police refuse an unequipped vehicle at weekends once the road control centre raises its alert level, and midweek on an orange snow warning. They may also turn back a car on snow socks alone.

Carrier Tip

Give the residence name, not just Val Thorens, and say whether the apartment will be ready: if it will not, ask for the drop at Place des Arolles, where the bus station stores luggage. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, because they decide the vehicle. And if you drive yourself one day, ignore a sat-nav that offers the D96 out of Moûtiers: the resort's booking office calls it very narrow and regularly closed.

Price & Vehicle Options

A private transfer from Grenoble Airport to Val Thorens costs from around €370 one way, priced per vehicle rather than per person. On this route the published fares barely change between a car and a van, so a saloon and a minivan start within €5 of each other: three people in a saloon pay about €123 each, six in a minivan €62.50 each.

Important Information

Meeting your driver at Grenoble Airport

The airport has an arrivals terminal and a departures terminal, and no car may stop in front of either. The drop-off area is the P2 car park, where the first 10 minutes are free. Your driver meets you in the arrivals terminal and walks you to the car. Give your carrier the flight number so it can track the landing.

How far the airport is from Grenoble

Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport is at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 km north-west of Grenoble by road. From the terminal, Val Thorens is about 188 km by road.

Winter tyres and chains

From 1 November to 31 March every vehicle in Savoie must carry chains or snow socks for two driving wheels, or run on four winter tyres marked 3PMSF. Val Thorens goes further: under a municipal decree the police may refuse an unequipped vehicle whenever the resorts are open and conditions require it. Ask the carrier to confirm the equipment when you book, in April as much as in January.

Tolls

The motorway tolls are €14.40 each way for a car and €21.00 for a taller van in toll class 2, on the operator's tariff in force since 1 February 2026. Published private fares normally include the tolls; confirm it in the offer.

Arriving in a semi-pedestrian resort

Val Thorens restricts street parking in winter, but a vehicle may make a minute stop at your door to unload. If the accommodation is not ready, the bus station at Place des Arolles has luggage storage, free shuttles serve every part of the resort, and the whole place can be crossed on foot in 20 minutes.

Skis, boards and luggage

Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases.

Child seats

Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Val Thorens from Grenoble Airport?

About 188 km by road, and about 2 hours 25 minutes in free-flowing traffic: the A48 to Grenoble, the A41 up the Grésivaudan, the A43 and A430 to Albertville, the N90 to Moûtiers, then about 37 km of mountain road, the D117, up the Belleville valley. The airport is about 45 km north-west of Grenoble itself. Saturdays in the French winter holidays are slower.

How much does a private transfer from Grenoble Airport to Val Thorens cost?

On TransferBnB a private transfer from Grenoble Airport to Val Thorens starts from around €370 per vehicle, one way, for a saloon, from €375 for a minivan and from €805 for a minibus of up to 15 seats. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so six people in a minivan pay €62.50 each. Verified carriers send quotes for your date.

Is Grenoble the closest airport to Val Thorens?

No. Chambéry is, at 122 km by the tourist office's figures. Grenoble is 194 km, Lyon 199 km and Geneva 201 km, so those three are within 7 km of each other and Chambéry is about 45 minutes closer by road. Choose Grenoble for Val Thorens when the flight suits you, not for the distance: a private transfer from the terminal takes about 2h 25min.

Is there a train or bus from Grenoble Airport to Val Thorens?

No railway serves Grenoble Airport, and no train reaches Val Thorens. The scheduled shared coach the airport lists runs to Val Thorens on Saturdays, from 12 December 2026 to 3 April 2027. On other days the public route is the airport bus to Grenoble station, about 40 minutes, a train to Moûtiers, 37 km below the resort, and a bus of about 45 minutes up to it. A private transfer runs any day and takes about 2h 25min from the arrivals terminal to your door, with no change.

What are the motorway tolls from Grenoble Airport to Val Thorens?

€14.40 each way for a car: €3.90 on the A48 from Rives to the Voreppe barrier and €10.50 from the Crolles barrier to Sainte-Hélène, on the tariff in force since 1 February 2026. A van over 2 m high pays €21.00. The N90 from Albertville to Moûtiers is free. On a private transfer the tolls are normally part of the quote.

Do I need winter tyres or snow chains to get from Grenoble Airport to Val Thorens?

The vehicle does. From 1 November to 31 March all of Savoie requires chains or snow socks for two driving wheels, or four winter tyres marked 3PMSF, and on this drive the rule starts where the A41 enters Savoie. A municipal decree also lets the police turn back an unequipped vehicle on the climb to Val Thorens whenever the resorts are open and conditions require it. On a private transfer the equipment is the carrier's job; ask them to confirm it when you book.

How bad is Saturday traffic to Val Thorens in February?

Some Saturdays are far slower than any other day. The road authority counts about 25,000 vehicles a day on the N90 between Albertville and Moûtiers on average and up to 70,000 on some winter Saturdays, and a regulation light before Moûtiers holds traffic when the valley is full. In 2027 the French holiday Saturdays are 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March. No authority publishes a delay in minutes, so leave a margin, or travel on a Sunday or midweek: with a private transfer you choose the pickup time.

Can a car drive to my hotel in Val Thorens?

Yes, to unload. Val Thorens is semi-pedestrian and restricts street parking in winter, but a vehicle may make a minute stop in front of the accommodation, and that is all a private transfer needs. Anyone who keeps a car in the resort must use its car parks, at €90 to €100 a week.

When does Val Thorens open for the 2026/27 season?

The Val Thorens lifts run from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. The linked 3 Vallées ski area is open from 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, so Val Thorens opens two weeks before the linked area and closes two weeks after it.

Why Book This Route?

  • • About 188 km and 2h 25min from the arrivals terminal to your door, on any day, where the scheduled shared coach runs on Saturdays
  • • A driver waiting in arrivals at an airport where taxis are called by phone and no fare table is published
  • • Tolls of €14.40 each way are normally inside the quote
  • • A vehicle on winter tyres or carrying chains, which the police on the climb can insist on
  • • Quoted per vehicle, not per head: six in a minivan pay €62.50 each

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. — London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. — Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. — Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria
