About This Transfer

Your driver stops at the door of your Val Thorens residence, the skis and cases go into the back once, and the car drops down the D117 through Les Menuires and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville to Moûtiers. There it joins the N90 expressway to Albertville, then the A430 and the A43, turns south-west down the A41 to Grenoble, crosses the city and takes the A48 and the D119 to the airport at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs. The whole run is about 188 km and takes about 2h 25min in free-flowing traffic.

The clock that matters is the flight's. Grenoble Airport recommends arriving at check-in 2 hours 30 minutes before departure, so the car should leave the resort at least 5 hours before the flight, and earlier on a holiday Saturday or in snow. Your airline's own check-in deadline still applies.

Two stretches decide the day. The first is the N90 between Moûtiers and Albertville, the road every Tarentaise resort empties onto on a Saturday. The second is Grenoble: the airport is about 45 km beyond the city, and the drive has to get across it or round it first.

The tolls are €14.40 for a car, the same as on the way up, and the car that collects you arrives on winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carrying chains, as Savoie requires from 1 November to 31 March. For every run to and from the terminal, see our Grenoble Airport transfers page. Our guide to which airport to fly into for the French Alps compares the alternatives, and the nearest-airport table sets every Alpine resort against its airports.

Route Overview

Pickup: Val Thorens, Belleville valley, Savoie

Val Thorens restricts street parking in winter, but a vehicle may make a minute stop in front of your accommodation, so the car collects you at the door. If you have already checked out, the bus station at Place des Arolles stores luggage at €4 a piece and receives private-hire cars for the airports. Agree the pickup point when you book.

Popular Pickup Points:

  • • Hotels, residences and chalets in Val Thorens, at the door
  • • Place des Arolles bus station, with luggage storage
  • • Les Menuires, on the same road
  • • Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, lower in the valley

Drop-off: Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport (GNB)

The airport is at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, about 45 km north-west of Grenoble by road, with an arrivals terminal and a departures terminal. No car may stop in front of either: the drop is in the P2 car park, where the first 10 minutes are free, and you walk to the departures terminal from there. Tell the carrier the flight number.

Popular Drop-off Points:

  • • P2 car park, the airport's drop-off area
  • • Departures terminal, on foot from the car park
  • • Flight number given at booking, so the pickup time follows the flight
  • • Timed to the airport's advice to arrive 2h 30min before the flight

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

Best Travel Times

Work back from the flight: 5 hours before departure in free-flowing traffic. The French winter holidays put five changeover Saturdays in a row in 2027, on 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March, and those need a wider margin. A Sunday or midweek flight is the easier way home.

Traffic Patterns

The N90 between Moûtiers and Albertville is where a Saturday is lost: about 25,000 vehicles a day on average, up to 70,000 on some winter Saturdays, nearly three times as many. For Saturday 14 February 2026 the national forecast named the A43 among the motorways that would be very busy on the way back, from mid-morning to early evening. The prefecture's advice is to stay on the N90 and not follow a sat-nav onto side roads. No authority publishes a time across Grenoble at rush hour, so a late-afternoon flight on a working day deserves its own margin.

Road & Border Notes

The drive stays in France. Tolls are €14.40 for a car and €21.00 for a taller van in toll class 2, paid in two stages, at Crolles and at Rives. The N90 is free. From 1 November to 31 March all of Savoie requires chains or snow socks for two driving wheels, or four winter tyres marked 3PMSF; the rule ends for this drive where the A41 leaves Savoie.

Carrier Tip

Give the flight number and the residence name, and say how many ski and board bags are coming down: they decide the vehicle. If you check out hours before the pickup, leave the bags at the Place des Arolles bus station and meet the car there.

Price & Vehicle Options

A private transfer from Val Thorens to Grenoble Airport costs from around €370 one way, priced per vehicle rather than per person. On this route the published fares barely change between a car and a van, so a saloon and a minivan start within €5 of each other: three people in a saloon pay about €123 each, six in a minivan €62.50 each.

Important Information

How early to leave Val Thorens

Grenoble Airport recommends arriving at check-in 2 hours 30 minutes before the flight departs, and the drive is about 2h 25min in free-flowing traffic, so leave at least 5 hours before departure. Allow more on a French holiday Saturday or in snow. Check-in closes between 40 and 60 minutes before departure, depending on the airline; check yours.

Where the car drops you at the airport

No car may stop in front of the terminal at Grenoble Airport. The drop-off area is the P2 car park, where the first 10 minutes are free.

Where the car picks you up

Val Thorens restricts street parking in winter, but a vehicle may make a minute stop at your door to load. If you have checked out, the bus station at Place des Arolles has luggage storage and receives private-hire cars for the airports. The resort can be crossed on foot in 20 minutes, and free shuttles serve every part of it.

Saturday departures

In 2027 the French holiday Saturdays are 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March. No authority publishes a delay in minutes for them, so set the pickup with a margin beyond the 5 hours, or fly on a Sunday or midweek.

Winter tyres and chains

From 1 November to 31 March every vehicle in Savoie must carry chains or snow socks for two driving wheels, or run on four winter tyres marked 3PMSF. The car has to climb to the resort to collect you, and under a municipal decree the police may refuse an unequipped vehicle access whenever the resorts are open and conditions require it, so the equipment matters for an April pickup too.

Tolls

The motorway tolls are €14.40 for a car and €21.00 for a taller van in toll class 2, on the operator's tariff in force since 1 February 2026. Published private fares normally include the tolls; confirm it in the offer.

Skis, boards and luggage

Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases.

Child seats

Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Val Thorens to Grenoble Airport?

About 2 hours 25 minutes in free-flowing traffic, for about 188 km: about 37 km down the D117 to Moûtiers, then the N90 to Albertville, the A430 and A43, the A41 to Grenoble and the A48 to the airport, which is about 45 km beyond the city. Saturdays in the French winter holidays are slower, because traffic on the N90 can reach nearly three times the average.

How early should I leave Val Thorens for a flight from Grenoble Airport?

At least 5 hours before the flight departs. Grenoble Airport recommends arriving at check-in 2 hours 30 minutes before departure, and the drive from Val Thorens takes about 2h 25min in free-flowing traffic. Allow more on a French holiday Saturday or in snow, and check your airline's own check-in deadline. A private transfer sets the pickup time from your flight.

How much does a private transfer from Val Thorens to Grenoble Airport cost?

On TransferBnB a private transfer from Val Thorens to Grenoble Airport starts from around €370 per vehicle, one way, for a saloon, from €375 for a minivan and from €805 for a minibus of up to 15 seats. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so six people in a minivan pay €62.50 each. Verified carriers send quotes for your date.

Where does a car drop passengers at Grenoble Airport?

In the P2 car park. Grenoble Airport no longer lets any vehicle stop in front of the terminal, and P2 is its drop-off area, with the first 10 minutes free. A private transfer from Val Thorens drops you in P2 with your bags.

How bad is Saturday traffic from Val Thorens to Grenoble?

Some Saturdays are far slower than any other day. The road authority counts about 25,000 vehicles a day on the N90 between Moûtiers and Albertville on average and up to 70,000 on some winter Saturdays. For Saturday 14 February 2026 the national forecast named the A43 among the motorways that would be very busy on the way back, from mid-morning to early evening. No authority publishes a delay in minutes, so a private transfer on a holiday Saturday should leave with a margin beyond the 5 hours.

Can a transfer pick me up at my accommodation in Val Thorens?

Yes. Val Thorens is semi-pedestrian and restricts street parking in winter, but a vehicle may make a minute stop in front of the accommodation, which is all a private transfer needs to load. If you have checked out, the bus station at Place des Arolles has luggage storage and receives private-hire cars.

Is there a bus or train from Val Thorens to Grenoble Airport?

No train reaches Val Thorens and no railway serves Grenoble Airport. The scheduled shared coach the airport lists runs between the two on Saturdays, from 12 December 2026 to 3 April 2027. On other days the public route is a bus of about 45 minutes down to Moûtiers station, a train to Grenoble and the airport bus, about 40 minutes more. A private transfer runs any day and takes about 2h 25min from your door, with no change.

What are the tolls from Val Thorens to Grenoble Airport?

€14.40 for a car: €10.50 from the Sainte-Hélène barrier to Crolles and €3.90 from the Voreppe barrier to Rives, on the tariff in force since 1 February 2026. A van over 2 m high pays €21.00. The N90 from Moûtiers to Albertville is free. On a private transfer the tolls are normally part of the quote.

Does a transfer still need winter tyres in April?

It needs them to reach you. The national rule ends on 31 March, but the Val Thorens lifts run to 2 May 2027, about a month longer, and a municipal decree lets the police refuse an unequipped vehicle access to the resort whenever it is open and conditions require it. The resort's booking office recommends winter equipment for the whole season. On a private transfer, ask the carrier to confirm it for an April pickup.

Why Book This Route?

  • • Pickup time set from your flight: 5 hours before departure, more on a holiday Saturday
  • • Collected at your door on any day, where the scheduled shared coach runs on Saturdays
  • • About 188 km and 2h 25min with no change, against a bus, a train and another bus
  • • Tolls of €14.40 are normally inside the quote
  • • Quoted per vehicle, not per head: six in a minivan pay €62.50 each

What our customers say

  • Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.
    Thomas B. — London, UK
  • Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.
    Marta R. — Munich, Germany
  • Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.
    Olivier D. — Lyon, France
  • Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.
    Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland
  • Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.
    Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
    Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria
