Leave at least 4h 40min before a European flight

The drive is about 2h 10min in free-flowing traffic, and Lyon Airport recommends arriving 2.5 hours before a flight within France or Europe and 3 hours before a flight outside Europe. That makes 4h 40min, or 5h 10min for a flight outside Europe, before any traffic.

On a holiday Saturday or after snowfall, leave earlier.

About This Transfer

Your driver collects you at the door in Alpe d'Huez, the skis and cases go into the back once, and the car starts down the D211: 21 bends, counted from 1 at the top to 21 at the bottom, and about 20 minutes to Le Bourg-d'Oisans. The D1091 follows the Romanche down to Vizille, the N85 and the A480 carry you past Grenoble, and the A48 and A43 run to the airport. The whole run is about 153 km and takes about 2h 10min in free-flowing traffic.

Plan the day backwards from the flight. Lyon Airport recommends arriving 2.5 hours before a flight within France or Europe, so leave the resort at least 4h 40min before departure. Leave more on a holiday Saturday or after snowfall: the valley road is shared with the rest of the Oisans, and the climb is cleared regularly but remains a mountain road.

The train does not solve a morning flight. No railway reaches Alpe d'Huez, so a rail trip starts with a bus down to Grenoble, and on a Saturday the first train from Grenoble reaches the airport station at 08:46. With the airport's 2.5 hours, that rules out any Saturday flight before about 11:15.

The same drive in the other direction, and every other run from the terminal, is on our Lyon Airport transfers page. Our ski resort transfers page explains what skis, boards and group size do to a quote, and the French Alps ski transfers guide covers the season.

Best Travel Times

Midweek flights are the easy ones. The holiday Saturdays of winter 2027 are 6, 13, 20 and 27 February and 6 March, and on those days the whole Oisans leaves by one valley road. On a changeover Saturday, take the earliest pickup the flight allows. The Christmas holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, and Tomorrowland Winter ends on 27 March 2027.

🚦

Traffic Patterns

The descent is about 20 minutes in free-flowing traffic, and the D1091 down the Romanche to Vizille is the stretch the Oisans resorts share. One operator who drives the route allows at least an hour more on winter Saturdays and Sundays, and live road conditions for the Isère are on itinisere.fr. Past Grenoble the A480 has three lanes each way and a 70 km/h limit on its urban stretch, and the rest is motorway to the airport.

🛣️

Road & Border Notes

The drive stays in France. Going back, the toll ticket is taken at the Voreppe barrier and paid at Saint-Quentin-Fallavier: €13.70 for a car, €21.70 for a van between 2 m and 3 m high. The winter-equipment rule applies from 1 November to 31 March on the climb and down the Romanche valley as far as Séchilienne. The Gavet bridge on the D1091 is being rebuilt, with the new bridge due in the second half of 2026.

💡

Carrier Tip

Give the flight time and let the carrier work back from it: about 2h 10min of driving plus the airport's 2.5 hours for a European flight. Declare skis, boards and boot bags when you book, because they decide the vehicle. Ask to be dropped at the TGV station if you are continuing by train.

Important Information

How early to leave
Lyon Airport recommends arriving 2.5 hours before a flight within France or Europe and 3 hours before a flight outside Europe. With about 2h 10min of driving, that is at least 4h 40min before a European flight and 5h 10min before one outside Europe, before any traffic or snow.
Early flights
No train leaves Alpe d'Huez. On the current timetable, to 12 December 2026, the first train from Grenoble reaches the airport station at 06:49 Monday to Thursday, 08:46 on Fridays and Saturdays and 10:49 on Sundays, and you need a bus down to Grenoble before it. A pre-booked car leaves when the flight needs it to.
Winter equipment, 1 November to 31 March
On the descent and down the Romanche valley as far as Séchilienne, a vehicle must have winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carry chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels. The tourist office says the road is regularly cleared of snow and that checks are frequent.
Tolls
€13.70 for a car and €21.70 for a van between 2 m and 3 m high, on the tariff in force since 1 February 2026. Going back it is one ticket, taken at the Voreppe barrier and paid at Saint-Quentin-Fallavier. Most carriers include it in the quote.
Skis, boards and luggage
Declare ski bags, board bags and boot bags when you book. They decide the vehicle: a saloon carrying three passengers will not also carry three hard ski cases.
Child seats
Child and booster seats are available on request. Put the ages in the booking notes, not just the number of children, because the ages decide the seat type.

What our customers say

Thomas B. — London, UK

Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.

Marta R. — Munich, Germany

Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.

Olivier D. — Lyon, France

Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.

Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland

Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.

Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.

Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria

I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
