One road up the valley, and your satnav gets it wrong
In winter Obergurgl is reached by one road, the B186 up the Ötztal, and Land Tirol has closed it. On 22 December 2023 avalanche danger shut it between Zwieselstein and Obergurgl for about 19 hours, and the state wrote that a detour was not possible. The Timmelsjoch pass beyond Hochgurgl, the only other way out, is shut all winter, and satnavs read that closure as meaning Obergurgl cannot be reached on the B186. The lift company's own advice is to enter Sölden, not Obergurgl, as the destination.

About This Transfer
You get into the car outside the one terminal at Innsbruck and are on the A12 heading west within minutes. Innsbruck Airport to Obergurgl is about 94 km and 1h 20min in free flow: about 40 km of motorway to the Ötztal exit at Haiming, then about 50 km of valley road, the B186, through Oetz, Umhausen, Längenfeld and Sölden to the top of the valley. The last 14 km from Sölden climb to 1,930 m, the highest parish in Austria. The driver stops at your hotel, in a resort where more than 90 percent of the accommodation is within 250 m of the slopes.
It is a short transfer for a resort this high, and a narrow one. While the Timmelsjoch is shut, the B186 is the only road up the valley. When floodwater washed away up to 100 m of it at Umhausen in late August 2023, Land Tirol said the rear Ötztal could be reached only over the Timmelsjoch, an enormous detour, and the Timmelsjoch closes for the winter every November. The lift company's arrival page tells drivers to put Sölden in the satnav for the same reason.
The public route exists and works, with changes. There is no railway station at the airport, so the journey is a city bus, a train to Ötztal Bahnhof and the valley bus: on the planner's timetable for 5 December 2026 it takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes with two or three changes. The last airport departure that reaches Obergurgl that night leaves at 19:43 and arrives at 22:33. Land at 20:00 and the next public arrival in Obergurgl is 07:05 the following morning.

Stuibenfall
Tyrol's highest waterfall drops 159 m in two stages just outside Umhausen, a few minutes off the valley road. It was made by the Köfels landslide, which blocked the mouth of the Horlachtal 8,700 years ago, and on peak days up to 2,000 litres a second go over the edge. It is a summer stop rather than a winter one, and the one sight on this road worth asking the driver to pause for.
Naturpark Ötztal →Sölden and its glaciers
The B186 runs straight through Sölden, a bigger resort than Obergurgl with 147 km of slopes and 31 lifts between 1,350 and 3,340 m. Its Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers, 34.5 km of slopes linked by a ski tunnel, traditionally open in mid-September or early October, and the Ötztal Glacier Road up to them is a toll road that Sölden calls the highest road in the Eastern Alps. The World Cup opens on the Rettenbach on 24 and 25 October 2026.
Sölden →Top Mountain Crosspoint
Top Mountain Crosspoint, at 2,175 m on the Timmelsjoch road at Hochgurgl, is Europe's highest motorbike museum, and the same building houses the Timmelsjoch toll station. For a Hochgurgl guest it is a short trip from the hotel.
Tirol →Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road
The pass road continues from Hochgurgl over the Timmelsjoch into South Tyrol. It is open from 07:00 to 20:00 in summer, and the car toll in 2026 is €20 one way or €28 return; in 2026 it opened on 13 May, earlier than ever in its history. It closes for the winter in November, on 2 November in 2025. That closure is the reason satnavs send drivers the wrong way to Obergurgl.

Pickup: Innsbruck Airport (INN)
Innsbruck has one terminal, so there is no terminal to get wrong. Carriers usually meet you in the arrivals hall with a name board, and yours confirms the meeting point before the day. On the airport's November 2025 tariff sheet the car parks allow a free exit within 10 minutes, which is not enough to meet a winter flight, so a driver meeting you parks and pays. Under the airport's car park conditions of use (2024 version), commercial carriers may use the car parks only with a quota permit and an agreement with the airport company, which is one reason to book a carrier that already works Innsbruck.

Obergurgl is a village of about 400 year-round residents at 1,930 m. Hochgurgl is 2,150 m and branches off below Obergurgl onto the Timmelsjoch road, about 95 km from the airport, so a booking that says Gurgl needs to say which. Obergurgl's centre has a short-stay zone of up to 90 minutes on weekdays from 08:00 to 18:00, long enough to unload and not to wait. The centre garage has a 2.3 m entrance height, which a high-roof minibus will not clear.

Obergurgl's two peak-season blocks are 19 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 and 30 January to 26 February 2027, and inside them the pressure falls on Saturdays and Sundays, the two days the airport's slot coordinator fully coordinates in winter. The odd extra on this road is October: Sölden's glacier opens in mid-September or early October and the World Cup weekend runs from 23 to 25 October 2026, so October has traffic on this road too.
Traffic Patterns
The motorway leg is about 40 km. The valley road is the part to plan for. Everything bound for Obergurgl, Hochgurgl, Vent and the Timmelsjoch goes through Sölden on the B186, so Sölden's own resort traffic sits on your route for the last stretch. Nobody publishes a Saturday or snowfall drive time for this road, so treat any figure you are quoted as a carrier's estimate. In summer, the Ötztaler Radmarathon closes roads on the day: the next one is Sunday 29 August 2027, 227 km over four passes with 4,000 riders, and in 2026 the Timmelsjoch was shut from 11:00 to 19:30 for it.
Road & Border Notes
There is no border: the whole drive is in Tyrol. There is a vignette. None of Austria's four vignette-free motorway sections is on this road, so the A12 from the airport needs one, and the lift company's arrival page says so. A carrier can avoid it on the B171, the old road along the Inn, which carries no vignette; routed with village waypoints that costs roughly 30 minutes. Austrian winter tyre law runs from 1 November to 15 April. Cars need winter tyres in wintry conditions, and chains may replace them only on a road fully covered in snow or ice.
