Saturday is changeover day in the Zillertal
Saturday is when the Zillertal changes over, and last winter Land Tirol wrote the day into its traffic rules. From 20 December 2025 to 28 March 2026 it banned non-local through traffic from turning off the B169 onto the side roads, on Saturdays from 07:00 to 19:00, to keep the village roads clear. The exemption covers a holiday address only when the side road is the only way to reach it. The 2026/27 order is not published yet.
Tell your carrier the village and the hotel, not just Mayrhofen. Finkenberg and Hintertux are further up a different road.
About This Transfer
You get into the car outside the one terminal at Innsbruck and are on the A12 heading east within minutes. Innsbruck Airport to Mayrhofen is about 75 km and 1h 05min in free flow: about 43 km of motorway down the Inn valley to the Zillertal exit at Wiesing, then about 29 km of the B169 up the valley through Fügen and Zell am Ziller to Mayrhofen at 633 m. The driver stops at your hotel door, which in Mayrhofen matters more than it sounds, because there is no parking at the Penkenbahn and the village garage takes nothing taller than 2.30 m.
The second half is the one to plan for. From the motorway, the resorts of the Zillertal are reached up the B169, and on a winter Saturday the valley changes over on it. The Brettfalltunnel at the valley mouth, which Land Tirol calls the gateway to the Zillertal, has been two-lane again since 23 June 2026, with the remaining renovation work done without traffic restrictions.
The public route is good by Alpine standards, with two changes. There is no railway station at the airport, so the journey is bus F into Innsbruck, a main-line train to Jenbach and the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn, 32 km up the valley. On the planner's timetable for Saturday 5 December 2026 that takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. After the last train into Mayrhofen at 20:55 a bus takes over from Jenbach. On most nights the last airport departure that reaches Mayrhofen leaves at 20:10 and arrives at 22:20; only on Saturdays does a later bus run, leaving the airport at 22:40 and arriving at 00:50.

Achenseebahn
Jenbach, where the Zillertal meets the Inn valley, is a station with three track gauges. From it the Achenseebahn has climbed 6.76 km to the Achensee since 1889, and calls itself Europe's oldest steam-operated cog railway. It is a summer ride: its 2026 season ends on 26 September. Jenbach has its own exit on the A12, one junction past the Zillertal exit.

The narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn runs beside the valley road for all 32 km from Jenbach to Mayrhofen, half-hourly every day, and every train is wheelchair-equipped. In summer it runs a steam train too: in 2026 from 2 June to 25 September, Tuesday to Thursday, on a separate fare, since Verbund tickets are not valid on it.

Mayrhofen's own ski area, Mountopolis, has 142 km of pistes and 61 lifts across the Penken and the Ahorn, and its Harakiri, with a gradient of up to 78 percent, is billed as Austria's steepest slope. In 2026/27 the Penkenbahn and Horbergbahn run from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 and the Ahornbahn from 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, weather permitting.
Mayrhofen →Hintertux Glacier
The road does not end at Mayrhofen. The Tuxer Straße (L 6) climbs the Tux valley past Finkenberg to Hintertux, 18.7 km and about 21 minutes further, where the glacier gives the valley its long season. If your booking says Zillertal, check which village it means: Hintertux is a longer job.

Pickup: Innsbruck Airport (INN)
Innsbruck has one terminal, so there is no terminal to get wrong. Carriers usually meet you in the arrivals hall with a name board, and yours confirms the meeting point before the day. On the airport's November 2025 tariff sheet the car parks allow a free exit within 10 minutes, which is not enough to meet a winter flight, so a driver meeting you parks and pays. Under the airport's car park conditions of use (2024 version), commercial carriers may use the car parks only with a quota permit and an agreement with the airport company, which is one reason to book a carrier that already works Innsbruck.

Mayrhofen is a market town on the valley floor at 633 m, at the head of the main Zillertal. The drop is your hotel door. There is no parking at the Penkenbahn, and the lift company sends drivers to the Horbergbahn in Schwendau instead. The village underground garage has a 2.30 m entry height, which a high-roof minibus will not clear, so a group vehicle unloads at the door or uses the bus park, at €4.00 an hour.

Best Travel Times
Saturday is the changeover day. The airport's slot coordinator fully coordinates Innsbruck on winter Saturdays and Sundays, and last winter's Zillertal driving bans applied on Saturdays alone, from 20 December 2025 to 28 March 2026 plus 6 January 2026. Inside the lift season, 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, a weekday arrival meets a quieter valley road than a Saturday one. Snowbombing, 5 to 10 April 2027, brings its own arrival wave at the end of the season.
Traffic Patterns
The motorway leg is about 43 km and rarely the problem. The valley road is: the B169 carries the arrivals for the resorts of the Zillertal, and on a changeover Saturday they share it. Last winter Land Tirol banned non-local through traffic from turning off the B169 onto the side roads on Saturdays, at three points along the valley, so the queue stays on the main road for everyone. Nobody publishes a Saturday drive time for the B169, so treat any figure you are quoted as a carrier's estimate. The Brettfalltunnel at the valley mouth has been two-lane again since 23 June 2026.
Road & Border Notes
There is no border: the whole drive is in Tyrol. There is a vignette. The only vignette-free stretch of the A12 is at Kufstein, at the far end of the motorway, so the A12 from the airport to the Zillertal exit needs one. At the prices valid from 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2026 a car pays €9.60 for one day or €12.80 for ten. The B169 itself is toll-free. Austrian winter tyre law runs from 1 November to 15 April: cars need winter tyres in wintry conditions, and chains may replace them only on a road fully or almost fully covered in snow or ice.
Carrier Tip
Give the carrier three things: the village, the hotel name, and what you are carrying. Mayrhofen, Finkenberg and Hintertux are all the Zillertal to a booking form, and Hintertux is 18.7 km further. A group in a high-roof minibus cannot use the village garage, and a request to be dropped at the gondola needs to say which one, because the Penkenbahn has no parking.
