The tourist train between Naples and Sorrento is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice, EAV says. The ordinary Circumvesuviana trains stay in the timetable, with one piece of luggage up to 20 kg carried free, but you reach it from the airport by first taking the Alibus to Piazza Garibaldi. A private transfer does not depend on either timetable.

About This Transfer
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Naples, walks you to the car, and you leave the airport with the luggage loaded once. Naples Airport to Sorrento is around 55 km and about 1 hour 10 minutes: the A3 motorway south past Pompeii, then the SS145 Sorrentina along the peninsula, through Vico Equense, Meta, Piano and Sant'Agnello into Sorrento. The car stops at your hotel, not at the station.
The coast road to Sorrento is not the Amalfi Coast road. The alternating-plate rule that closes the SS163 to half of all cars on restricted days covers only the 40 km from Vietri sul Mare to Positano, so it does not touch this drive. What does touch it is Sorrento's own limited-traffic zone, which in 2026 runs every evening from 19:30 to 04:00 between 1 April and 25 October. Agree with your carrier in advance where the car can stop.
The public alternatives are real and cheap. The airport bus to Sorrento costs €13 a person, leaves eight times a day between 09:00 and 19:30, and ends at Sorrento station 75 minutes later on its timetable. The Alibus and the Circumvesuviana cost €5 for the bus plus the train fare and take a change at Piazza Garibaldi. Both work well for one person with one bag on a daytime flight.
A private car suits the other cases: a family, a late landing, or a hotel that is not by the station. The excavated Roman city sits beside the A3, about 29 km from the airport, and it is the one stop on this drive worth planning a day around. Tickets are personal and capped at 20,000 entries a day. Suitcases and bags larger than 30x30x15 cm are not allowed inside; there is paid left luggage at the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances. If you stop on the way from the airport, agree the waiting time and the luggage plan with your carrier when you book.

The volcano stands above the motorway stretch of the drive. The crater trail, the Gran Cono, is a separate trip rather than a roadside stop, and the national park sells its tickets online only, so buy them before you go up.

Give your carrier the street address, because the airport bus stops in each of them but ends at Sorrento station, and a car can take you straight to the right one.

Naples has one terminal, so there is only one arrivals hall to find your driver in. A private car is not a taxi and does not use the taxi rank in front of arrivals. The airport gives any other car 15 minutes on its roads before a camera-issued fine of €80 to €318, and its P1 car park has the first 45 minutes free, which is where a driver waiting for a delayed flight can park. The airport reserves separate areas for licensed private-hire cars but does not publish where they are. Confirm the exact meeting point with your carrier in the booking chat before you fly.

The car takes you to your address in Sorrento or in the towns before it on the SS145. The one constraint is Sorrento's limited-traffic zone: from 1 April to 25 October it runs every day from 19:30 to 04:00, and on public holidays also from 10:00 to 13:00, with camera gates on via Fuorimura, Corso Italia by the Carmine church, via Correale and via San Francesco. The Comune reserves permits for residents, workers and categories in its regulation. If your hotel is inside the zone and you land in the evening, ask your carrier where the car will stop.

Summer is the busy side of the year at Naples Airport. In 2025 August was its busiest month and January its quietest, with more than twice the passengers, and every month from April to October was busy. A summer landing shares the road with that traffic, and an evening landing in season meets the Sorrento limited-traffic zone, which starts at 19:30. The usual drive is about 1 hour 10 minutes.

After the A3, the SS145 Sorrentina runs through Vico Equense, Meta, Piano and Sant'Agnello before Sorrento. The airport bus warns that its own times are indicative and can run later in high season. A car has the same road, but no stops, and it ends at your hotel rather than at the station.
Road & Border Notes
No border and no Amalfi Coast plate rule on this drive. The alternating-plate rule applies only to the SS163 from Vietri sul Mare to Positano; the road to Sorrento is the A3 and then the SS145. The A3 is a toll motorway, and the Naples fixed taxi fare excludes tolls.
