Naples Capodichino is a city airport with a coast behind it. The terminal sits inside Naples itself, 15 minutes by bus from the central station. Sorrento is about 1h 10 south by car, past Vesuvius, and the Amalfi Coast is further on.

A note on who meets you

Private hire with a driver in Italy is NCC, Noleggio con Conducente, a different licence from a taxi. The airport's own road rules give NCC cars dedicated areas for picking up arriving passengers, apart from the taxi rank, and camera-enforce a 15-minute limit on every other car. The airport does not publish where those NCC areas are, so your carrier confirms the meeting point in the booking chat. Share your flight number and the timing is the carrier's problem, not yours.

About Naples Airport

The terminal, the city links, and the coast road rules

Your car leaves the terminal and joins the Tangenziale di Napoli at the Capodichino exit, and the airport behind you is one of the busiest in Italy. Naples Capodichino, IATA code NAP, handled 13.3 million passengers in 2025, which made it the 4th busiest airport in Italy after Fiumicino, Malpensa and Bergamo. Its official name is Ugo Niutta Airport, and GESAC runs it on a concession that lasts to 2045. It is the southern gateway on our Italy transfers map.

One terminal does all the work. Check-in is on the ground floor, arrivals come out through one hall, and connecting passengers leave arrivals and pass security again rather than transfer airside. The terminal opens at 03:30 and closes at 22:30, so the airport is not a place to sit out a late delay.

Summer is the whole story. August 2025 brought 1,520,154 passengers through, more than twice the 637,888 of January, and July and September were close behind.

Into the city

Naples itself is close, and the fixed fares keep the short run simple. The Alibus runs every 15 minutes at most, reaches Napoli Centrale in 15 minutes and the port in 35, and a single costs €5. A Naples taxi charges a fixed €21 to the central station or the historic centre and €24 to Molo Beverello, per car, as long as you ask for the fixed fare before the ride starts. Sailing from Naples? The coast road in summer

The Amalfi Coast road, the SS163, runs about 40 km from Vietri sul Mare to Positano, and in season it runs on alternating plates.

From 10:00 to 18:00 on restricted days, cars with an odd final digit may not drive it on odd dates, and even on even dates. In 2026 the rule applies every day through August and September, at weekends and holidays in June, July and October, and daily at Easter and from 25 April to 2 May. Guides that still quote 15 June to 30 September are reading the original ANAS text; the coast towns extended it to 1 June to 31 October.

Taxis and NCC cars are exempt. So are residents and scheduled buses, while hotel guests are only covered on the day they check in and the day they check out. A hire car picked up at Capodichino on an even date with an even plate cannot use the road until 18:00.

The towns add their own layer. Amalfi lets taxis and NCC cars into its limited traffic zone but not to park, and they must leave within 60 minutes. Positano charges €5 for one transit a day to any vehicle with more than 5 seats including the driver, NCC, taxi and private alike, on Via Pasitea, Piazza dei Mulini and Via C. Colombo.

The Curreri bus is a real bargain, €26 for two to Sorrento, and it runs every day of the year bar 1 January and 25 December. Its first departure is 09:00 and its last is 19:30, and it stops at Sorrento station, not your hotel. The Pintour bus to Amalfi showed no bookable rides after 31 October when we checked, and it does not go to Positano at all. The Campania Express tourist train is suspended from 1 October 2026.

Land at 11:00 with a backpack and the Curreri bus is a fine way to Sorrento.

Land after 19:30 with two suitcases and a child, and the last Curreri bus has already gone.

About 1 hour 10 minutes by car for roughly 55 km, as an operator who drives the route publishes it. The Curreri bus takes 75 minutes to Sorrento station on its timetable, and the operator warns that high-season traffic can make it later. A private transfer ends at your hotel rather than the station.
How long does it take from Naples Airport to Positano and Amalfi?
Operators who drive the routes publish 60 to 90 minutes to Positano and 90 to 100 minutes to Amalfi. Summer traffic on the coast road puts you at the long end of both, so give a dinner reservation a margin.
Can a transfer use the Amalfi Coast road on alternating-plate days?
Yes, if it is a licensed NCC car. The SS163 plate rule, 10:00 to 18:00 on restricted days, exempts taxis and NCC private-hire cars, so ask your carrier to confirm its NCC licence with the quote. In 2026 the rule runs daily through August and September, at weekends and holidays in June, July and October, and daily at Easter and from 25 April to 2 May. A self-drive hire car with the wrong final digit has to wait until 18:00.
Is there a direct bus from Naples Airport to Positano or Amalfi?
To Amalfi, yes: the Pintour coach leaves the airport five times a day, takes 1 hour 50 minutes to Amalfi and costs €20, with rides bookable up to 31 October when we checked in September 2026. To Positano, no: Pintour does not stop there, and the Curreri bus ends at Sorrento, where you change to a SITA bus that charges €1.50 for each bag over carry-on size. A private transfer takes you from arrivals to Positano in one vehicle.
How much is a taxi from Naples Airport to Sorrento, Positano or Amalfi?
The Comune di Napoli sets fixed taxi fares per car of €125 to Sorrento, €145 to Positano and €155 to Amalfi, with motorway tolls extra, and you must ask for the fixed fare at the start of the ride. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle before you fly, sized to your party and luggage, and picks you up away from the taxi rank.
What happens if my flight to Naples is delayed?
