Naples Airport will close for runway work in November 2026
The airport's operator says Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work. The dates are not yet published: its notice gives the month and no first or last day. If you fly home that month, confirm with your airline which airport the flight leaves from before you book a transfer. Salerno has its own airport, about 20 km from the city, run by the same company.
Operator's notice dated 21 September 2026. Check aeroportodinapoli.it for the dates.
About This Transfer
The car collects you at your door in Salerno, the cases go in once, and you are on the A3 motorway heading north past Vietri sul Mare and Pompeii. Salerno to Naples Airport is about 60 km and about 57 minutes in free-flowing traffic, and the driver stops in the dedicated bays on the departures road, where there is one terminal to find.
There are two motorways back. The A3 is the short one. The inland line, by the A2, A30, A16 and A1, is 69.4 km: 10 km longer and, in free flow, 1 minute quicker. With so little between them, which one is right depends on the traffic on the day, and that is the carrier's call.
Work back from the check-in desk. At Naples it opens 2 hours before domestic and international flights and 3 hours before intercontinental ones, and the airport opens at 03:30.
An early flight is where the car is hardest to replace.
On the Tuesday and the Saturday we sampled in October 2026, the first train of the day reached Napoli Centrale at 06:03, and a few minutes later on the Sunday. The Alibus to the airport is still to ride after that, 15 minutes and at most 15 minutes of waiting, which puts you at the terminal between about 06:20 and 06:35. The regional bus is later still: its first run reaches the airport at 08:30, Monday to Friday.
For a midday flight on a working day the train is the better buy, and we are not going to pretend otherwise: 38 to 46 direct trains a day on the days we sampled, most in 36 to 50 minutes, €5.80 on a regional, then €5 and 15 minutes on the Alibus. For the drive in the other direction, see our Naples Airport to Salerno page, and for the rest of the coast and how the airport works, the Naples Airport transfers page.
✓ Pickup at your door, the pier or the cruise quay
✓ About 57 min free flow for around 60 km
✓ The A3, or the inland A30 when it is quicker
Sights Along the Route
Your driver covers the distance while you enjoy the scenery.
Pompeii on your last day
Pompeii sits beside the A3 on the way to the airport, and with an afternoon or evening flight it fits into the last day. The catch is the luggage: bags larger than 30x30x15 cm are not allowed inside, and left luggage at the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances is paid. A car that waits with your cases solves it. Tickets are personal and capped at 20,000 entries a day, so buy them before the day.
Parco Archeologico di Pompei →Vietri sul Mare
The first town of the Amalfi Coast has its own motorway junction just outside Salerno, and the SS163 coast road starts here. If you are spending your last nights on the coast rather than in the city, the car can start from there instead; put the real pickup address in the request.
Comune di Vietri sul Mare →Route Overview
Pickup: Salerno
The car collects you where you are: a hotel or apartment, the railway station, the Piazza della Concordia ferry pier if you have come in by boat from the coast, or the cruise terminal on Molo Manfredi. The pier is about 540 m from the station by road and the cruise quay 2.4 km, so say which. The port authority says the port gates lead onto the viaduct to the A3. From the quay on Molo Manfredi the routed drive is 58.3 km and 58 minutes in free flow.
Popular Pickup Points:
Drop-off: Naples Airport (NAP) departures
Naples has one terminal with three entrances; Entrance 3, near arrivals, is the one the airport recommends for Air France, KLM and Ryanair. Licensed private-hire cars drop off only in the dedicated temporary bays on the departures road, for the time it takes to unload you and your luggage, and every car has 15 minutes on the airport roads. The airport opens at 03:30 and shuts at 22:30. Passengers aged 14 and over with an electronic passport can use the eGates at passport control.

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.
Best Travel Times
Early mornings are when the car earns its fare, and Sunday is when the public options are thinnest: the regional bus does not run at weekends. Summer is the busy season at Naples: in 2025 August carried more than twice January's passengers.
Traffic Patterns
The A3 has two lanes each way from Salerno to Scafati and three from Scafati to Naples, and it carries about 180,000 vehicles a day by its operator's count. Its operator posts planned night and lane closures week by week. The 57 minutes on this page is a free-flow figure and no authority publishes a peak-hour one, so give the carrier your flight time and let them set the margin.
Road & Border Notes
No border and no Amalfi Coast plate rule: the drive from Salerno is motorway, not the SS163. The A3 toll is a flat €2.30 for a car in 2026 and €2.40 for a van or minibus. The inland A30 and A16 are tolled as well, so ask for the toll to be stated in the offer whichever way the carrier goes. At the airport, private-hire cars use the dedicated drop-off bays on the departures road.
Carrier Tip
Give the carrier your flight time and whether the flight is domestic, international or intercontinental, and let them set the pickup: check-in opens 2 hours before for the first two and 3 hours before for the third. Say exactly where you are, especially at the port, where the ferry pier and the cruise quay are different gates. If you want Pompeii on the way, put it in the request so the waiting time is in the offer.

When to Travel This Route
Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.
Winter (Dec-Feb)
Low DemandJanuary was the quietest month at Naples Airport in 2025. The regional bus thins out over the holidays: the 07:00 from Salerno does not run from 23 December to 6 January, and the 17:15 runs until 22 December and returns on 7 January. The port authority's ferry season from Salerno runs March to November, so check any winter sailing with the ferry line.
- 07:00 regional bus off 23 December to 6 January
- 17:15 regional bus back from 7 January
- Quietest months at the airport
Spring (Mar-May)
Medium DemandThe coast ferries return in March on the port authority's calendar, and a trip home can start with a boat into Salerno. If it does, tell the carrier which pier you land at: Piazza della Concordia is about 540 m from the station by road, Molo Manfredi 2.4 km from it.
- Coast ferries from March
- Name the pier you arrive at
- Airport traffic rising toward summer
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Peak DemandAugust was the busiest month at Naples Airport in 2025, with more than twice January's passengers. The 17:15 regional bus does not run from 1 August to 6 September, which leaves two runs a day on working days. The airport warns that suburban bus times are approximate and longer in high season; a car on the same motorway needs a margin too, and the carrier sets it from your flight time.
- Busiest months at the airport
- 17:15 regional bus off 1 August to 6 September
- Bus times approximate in high season
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
High DemandAutumn 2026 has one notice that overrides the rest: Naples Airport will be closed for runway work in November, on dates not yet published. If you fly home that month, confirm the departure airport with your airline first. Until then the 17:15 regional bus is back from 7 September, and the port authority's ferry season runs to November.
- Naples Airport runway closure in November 2026
- 17:15 regional bus back from 7 September
- Ferry season runs to November
