Naples Airport will close for runway work in November 2026
The airport's operator says Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work. The dates are not yet published: its notice gives the month and no first or last day. If you travel that month, confirm with your airline which airport the flight uses before you book a transfer. In any other month, set the pickup from your flight: check-in desks open 2 hours before a domestic or international departure and 3 hours before an intercontinental one.
Operator's notice of 21 September 2026. Check-in times are Naples Airport's own.
About This Transfer
The car collects you at the point your hotel uses in Positano, the cases go in once, and you leave the town for the SS163. The first 15 km are the Amalfi coast road, then the SS145 Sorrentina round the peninsula to Castellammare di Stabia, then the A3 motorway north past Pompeii to Naples. Positano to Naples Airport is about 62 km and about 1 hour 15 minutes on a clear road, and the driver stops in the dedicated bays on the departures road, where there is one terminal to find.
The time to plan is the season. Operators who drive the route publish 60 to 90 minutes, and the airport itself says journeys from this coast run longer in high season because of road traffic. A licensed private-hire car is exempt from the alternating-plate rule on the SS163, so the day of the month does not decide whether you can leave between 10:00 and 18:00.
The public route out is two buses. The SITA coast bus takes 35 to 50 minutes from Positano to Sorrento, depending on the run, and the airport coach from Sorrento station takes 90 minutes on its own table and costs €13 a person: between 2 hours 5 minutes and 2 hours 20 minutes of riding before the wait between them. The boat from Positano to Molo Beverello in Naples is seasonal: its 2026 timetable runs from 1 April to 3 November, at €32 and €5 a bag, with a 35-minute Alibus ride from the port to the terminal. Either works for a midday flight and one bag.
A private car suits the early flight, the family and the heavy cases. For the drive in the other direction, see our Naples Airport to Positano page, and for the rest of the coast and how the airport works, the Naples Airport transfers page. The airport transfers page explains how carriers quote and what group size does to the offer.

Sights Along the Route
Your driver covers the distance while you enjoy the scenery.
The coast road out of Positano
The drive starts on the Amalfi coast road before it joins the Sorrentina at Meta. The alternating-plate rule applies on the SS163 from Positano east to Vietri sul Mare, 10:00 to 18:00 on restricted days, and a licensed private-hire car is exempt from it. Vehicles up to 6.00 m long and 2.10 m wide may use the road in both directions, which covers a car and a standard passenger van.
Comune di Positano →Pompeii
The excavated Roman city is on the way, under half an hour from the airport on a clear road. Tickets are personal and capped at 20,000 entries a day. Suitcases and bags larger than 30x30x15 cm are not allowed inside, and the left luggage at the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances is paid. A car can wait with the cases; put the stop in the request so the waiting time is in the offer.
Parco Archeologico di Pompei →Vesuvius
The volcano stands above the motorway stretch of the drive. The crater trail, the Gran Cono, is a separate trip rather than a stop on the way to a flight, and the national park sells its tickets online only.

Pickup: Positano
The road through Positano, Via Pasitea, Piazza dei Mulini and Via Cristoforo Colombo, is one-way and a limited-traffic zone. A transit pass does not allow stopping along it, and the Comune designates a point where taxis, private-hire cars and hotel shuttles may take passengers on. A vehicle with more than 5 seats including the driver pays €5 per daily transit, paid online by the carrier with the date and hour of entry. Ask your hotel where its guests are collected and how the cases get there, and give that to the carrier with the pickup time.
Popular Pickup Points:
Drop-off: Naples Airport (NAP) departures
Naples has one terminal with three entrances; Entrance 3, near arrivals, is the one the airport recommends for Air France, KLM and Ryanair. Licensed private-hire cars set down only in the dedicated temporary bays on the departures road, for the time it takes to unload you and your luggage, and every car has 15 minutes on the airport roads. The terminal opens at 03:30 and closes at 22:30. Passengers aged 14 and over with an electronic passport can use the eGates at passport control.

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.
Best Travel Times
The terminal opens at 03:30, check-in opens 2 hours before a domestic or international flight, and the public route needs a coast bus and then a 90-minute airport coach before you reach it. Summer is the busy side of the year at Naples Airport: in 2025 August carried more than twice January's passengers.
Traffic Patterns
More than half the distance is ordinary coast road, the SS163 and then the SS145, and the rest is motorway. The airport says journeys from this coast run longer in high season because of road traffic, and operators who drive the route publish 60 to 90 minutes against about 1 hour 15 minutes on a clear road. Give your carrier the flight time and let them build the summer margin into the pickup.
Road & Border Notes
No border. The SS163 carries the alternating-plate rule from 10:00 to 18:00 on restricted days, which in 2026 run from Easter week to 31 October; taxis and licensed private-hire cars are exempt. The A3 is a toll motorway with a flat charge, €2.30 for a car in 2026 and €2.40 for a two-axle van or minibus. At the airport end, private-hire cars use the dedicated set-down bays on the departures road.
Carrier Tip
Give the carrier your flight time and whether the flight is domestic, international or intercontinental, and let them set the pickup: check-in opens 2 hours before for the first two and 3 hours before for the third. Ask your hotel where its guests are collected and tell the carrier, because a transit pass does not allow stopping on Positano's limited-traffic road. If you want to stop at Pompeii on the way, put it in the request so the waiting time is in the offer.

Winter (Dec-Feb)
Low DemandJanuary was the quietest month at Naples Airport in 2025. The plate rule is off and the boat is not sailing: its 2026 season ends on 3 November. That leaves the road, by SITA bus and airport coach or by car. The airport coach from Sorrento does not run on 1 January or 25 December.
- Boat timetable ends 3 November 2026

In October it drops back to weekends and holidays, and in 2026 its last day is Saturday 31 October. The boat's season ends three days later, on 3 November. Autumn 2026 also carries one notice that overrides the rest: Naples Airport will be closed for runway work in November, on dates not yet published.
