An Amalfi Coast transfer from Naples Airport is short on the map and slow on the road: about 63 km to Positano, 65 km to Amalfi and 61 km to Ravello, which is 66 to 71 minutes with no traffic and up to 105 minutes as operators publish it. No railway reaches any of the three towns. A private car with a licensed driver is the one option that runs from arrivals to your hotel in a single vehicle.
One date matters before anything else: Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work, and the operator has published no first or last day.
This guide covers every way onto the coast from Naples and from Salerno: the fixed taxi fares the Comune di Napoli sets, the direct coach, the ferries and when they stop, which road reaches which town, and the plate rule on the coast road. The airport itself is on our Naples Airport transfers page.

What is the best way to get to the Amalfi Coast?
It depends on which town, and on what you are carrying.
The coast has one road, the SS163, and no station on it. Positano is at the western end, nearest Sorrento. Amalfi is in the middle, and Ravello stands above it on its own hill road.
For one or two people with light bags going to Amalfi town in daylight, the public options work, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. A direct coach runs there from the airport in season, and so do boats from Naples and Salerno.
The picture changes with the town, the hour and the month: the coach does not serve Positano or Ravello, the Naples ferry stops on 3 November, and every public route ends at a stop or a pier and not at a hotel. A private transfer is one licensed car from arrivals to the place you are staying, at any hour and in any month.
How much does an Amalfi Coast transfer cost in 2026?
A private transfer is priced by quote, per vehicle, before you fly. TransferBnB is a marketplace: you post the trip, verified local carriers send offers for your date, your party and your bags, and you choose one, so no single figure would be true for every booking and we print none. What can be printed is what the alternatives publish, and the firmest of those is the Naples taxi tariff.
The Comune di Napoli fixes one-way fares from Naples to the towns visitors ask for most. They are per car, in force since 1 September 2024, with night, holiday, luggage and airport supplements inside the fare. Motorway tolls and a €5 supplement for more than 4 passengers are extra.
| Destination | Fixed taxi fare, per car | Each, four sharing | Private transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Positano | €145 | €36.25 | Quote per vehicle |
| Amalfi | €155 | €38.75 | Quote per vehicle |
| Ravello | €160 | €40 | Quote per vehicle |
| Pompeii excavations | €70 | €17.50 | Quote per vehicle |
Read the table as a yardstick to hold an offer against, not as a quote. Taxi figures that circulate in guides run €150 to €170 for Positano, €170 to €190 for Amalfi and €180 to €200 for Ravello, and in each case the Comune's fare is lower.
The fixed fare has a procedure. You ask for it at the start of the ride, the driver may not refuse to apply it, and you get a receipt before the car leaves, with the meter showing F0.00. The same page notes that an out-of-town ride on the ordinary meter is not one a driver is obliged to take, so settle the fixed fare at the rank. A booked transfer has its vehicle and price agreed before you land.
A car pays a flat €2.30 on the A3 motorway in 2026.
How long is the drive from Naples Airport to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello?
Between 66 and 71 minutes with no traffic, and longer in season.
No authority publishes a drive time for these roads. The figures below are routed from the arrivals kerb on an empty road, so they are the least the drive takes and not a forecast.
| Town | Road in | Distance | No traffic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Positano | A3, SS145, then the SS163 coast road | About 63 km | 71 minutes |
| Amalfi | A3, SS145, then the SR366 over Agerola | About 65 km | 66 minutes |
| Ravello | A3 to Angri, then the Chiunzi pass | About 61 km | 71 minutes |
Read across the roads column before the minutes: the three drives are about the same length and use three different roads. Operators who drive them publish up to 90 minutes to Positano, 100 to Amalfi and 105 to Ravello by their own routes, which is the margin to leave before a dinner booking or a boat.
Positano
Positano is the first town on the coast road and the one with the least road in it.
The drive comes in from the Sorrento side: motorway, the SS145 along the peninsula, then about 12 km of the SS163, the Amalfitana. The town's limited traffic zone, the ZTL, is the loop of road that descends into it: Via Pasitea, Piazza dei Mulini and Via Cristoforo Colombo. A vehicle with more than 5 seats pays €5 a day to use the loop, whether taxi, private-hire van or private car, and buses wider than 2.20 m may not enter. Give the carrier your hotel's street address, and ask the hotel where cars stop for it.
Amalfi
Amalfi has an area in Piazza Flavio Gioia set aside for cars and for setting passengers down.
The quickest line from the airport does not follow the coast. It leaves the SS145 early, climbs over Agerola on the SR366 and drops to the town with only about 2 km on the coast road itself. Praiano lies on the other approach, the coast road from Positano.
Amalfi's ZTL is the main street running inland from Piazza Duomo. Taxis and licensed private-hire cars may enter it, may not park, and must be out within 60 minutes. Set-down for private-hire cars is in the Flavio Gioia area, booked in advance: the service costs €10 and allows two stops of at most 5 minutes in a day.
Ravello
Ravello sits above the coast, and the quick way in never touches the coast road.
The routed drive stays on the A3 past Pompeii to Angri, crosses the mountain by the Valico di Chiunzi and arrives from above. Ravello has no pier and no station, so no boat and no train gets you closer than Amalfi.
We found no official text on where vehicles may stop in Ravello, so we are not going to describe one. Ask your hotel for its set-down point and pass it to the carrier.
Is there a direct bus from Naples Airport to the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, to Amalfi town, and not to Positano or Ravello. A direct coach leaves the airport five times a day and takes 1 hour 50 minutes to Amalfi, stopping at Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori and Atrani on the way. The fare is shown when you book. In October 2026 it was on sale up to 31 October and not after, so treat it as seasonal until a winter timetable appears. A private transfer covers the towns and the months the coach does not, and leaves when your flight lands.
For Positano the public route is the airport bus to Sorrento, which costs €13, not the €10 often quoted, runs 8 times a day and takes 75 minutes to Sorrento station. From there the SITA bus takes about 40 minutes to Positano and about 90 minutes to Amalfi. SITA charges €1.50 for every bag larger than 50x30x25 cm and puts it in the hold only if there is room.
That is two buses, a change with your luggage, and no promise of space for the suitcase on the second.
Can you take a ferry from Naples to Positano or Amalfi?
Yes, from 1 April to 3 November 2026, and not in winter. The boats leave from Molo Beverello, the hydrofoil pier beside the cruise terminal. The 2026 timetable has three sailings a day, one of which changes boats at Capri and has its own lower fare, and five from 1 May. The standard adult fare is €32 to Positano and €32.50 to Amalfi. A private transfer runs every month of the year and ends at your door, where the boat ends at a pier.
Getting to the pier is the first leg: the Alibus from the airport takes 35 minutes to the port and costs €5. The Positano boat charges €5 for each piece of luggage, so one person with one suitcase pays €42. Four people pay €168, which is more than the €145 the Comune fixes for a whole taxi to Positano.
Cruise passengers starting from the same quay will find the port side of this in our Mediterranean cruise port transfers guide and on the cruise port transfers page.
Is there a train to the Amalfi Coast?
No. No railway reaches Positano, Amalfi or Ravello, and the two lines that come close stop at either end of the coast. The Circumvesuviana runs from Napoli Centrale to Sorrento in 64 to 75 minutes, and Trenitalia runs from Naples to Salerno in approximately 25 to 40 minutes. From either station you still need a bus, a boat or a car, where a transfer booked from the airport is one vehicle for the whole journey.
Both lines start with the Alibus: €5 and 15 minutes from the airport to Napoli Centrale.
Is it better to arrive through Naples or through Salerno?
It depends on which end of the coast you sleep at.
Salerno is the eastern gateway, and its ferry serves Amalfi, Minori, Maiori and Vietri sul Mare as well as Positano. The boat takes 35 minutes to Amalfi for €12 and 70 minutes to Positano for €17, with ten sailings a day to Amalfi and nine to Positano in the timetable that began on 1 October 2026. Luggage is €3 a piece, and the pier is a walk of 700 metres from Salerno station. By SITA bus, Amalfi to Salerno takes about 75 minutes.
Winter is the catch. The ferry operator heads its autumn timetable as an all-year service, the port authority describes the coast boats as running from March to November, and every sailing depends on the sea.
From Naples Airport, Salerno is a leg of its own. On weekdays a SITA bus runs there direct twice a day in 70 to 80 minutes; at other times it is the Alibus and a train. With one suitcase, the Alibus at €5, the ferry at €12 and the bag at €3 come to €20 a head to Amalfi before the train fare. By road, Salerno station is about 60 km and 56 minutes from the airport with no traffic, and there is no fixed taxi fare to it. For Positano, Naples stays the shorter way in.
Amalfi Coast transfer options compared
Every option reaches the coast; they differ in where they stop.
| Option | Changes | Where it ends | When it runs | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | None | Your hotel, or its set-down point | All year, any hour | Quote per vehicle |
| Naples taxi, fixed fare | None | Your hotel, or its set-down point | Fare valid day and night | €145 to €160 per car, tolls extra |
| Direct coach | None | Amalfi town | On sale to 31 October 2026 | Shown at booking |
| Bus to Sorrento, then SITA | One | A bus stop in Positano or Amalfi | All year | €13 to Sorrento, then SITA and €1.50 a suitcase |
| Alibus, then ferry from Naples | One | The pier at Positano or Amalfi | 1 April to 3 November 2026 | €42 each to Positano with a suitcase |
| Salerno, then ferry | One or two | The pier at Amalfi, Positano, Minori or Maiori | Check winter sailings | €20 each to Amalfi with a suitcase, plus the leg to Salerno |
Read down the middle column first. Only two rows end where you are sleeping, and only one of those is sized and priced for your party before you travel.
What are the alternating plate rules on the Amalfi Coast road?
They restrict private cars, not your driver.
On set dates the SS163 runs on alternating plates, the targhe alterne, between 10:00 and 18:00. On an odd date, cars whose plate ends in an odd digit may not use the road; on an even date, plates ending in an even digit may not. So a private or hire car is shut out on every other restricted day, and free to drive on the days between. The rule covers about 40 km of coast road from Vietri sul Mare to Positano and nothing else.
In 2026 the calendar the coast towns applied was:
- Easter week - every day from 30 March to 6 April.
- The spring holidays - every day from 25 April to 2 May.
- Late May to July - weekends and public holidays, from 30 May to 31 July.
- August and September - every day.
- October - weekends and public holidays, ending on 31 October.
Many guides still give 15 June to 30 September, the wording of the original road ordinance, which the towns have since extended at both ends. No calendar for 2027 had been published when we checked in October 2026, so read these dates as the pattern and confirm the year you travel.
Taxis and NCC cars, the licence a private transfer runs on, are exempt outright, as are scheduled buses. Hotel guests in their own or a hire car may also pass on check-in day and check-out day, whatever the plate. The Chiunzi pass road to Ravello and Maiori and the SR366 over Agerola are outside the rule.
Size limits apply to every vehicle on every day. Up to 6 m long and 2.10 m wide may drive the coast road in both directions; larger vehicles are held to one direction; and anything over 2.55 m wide or 10.36 m long is banned both ways. For a large party, ask the carrier which vehicle it is sending.
Can you stop at Pompeii on the way?
Yes. The excavations are about 28 km and 27 minutes from the airport with no traffic, on the same A3 that every drive in this guide starts on.
The constraint is luggage. Pompeii does not admit suitcases or any bag larger than 30x30x15 cm, and left luggage at the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances is charged for. Tell the carrier about the stop when you post the trip, so the wait is in the offer.
Compare Amalfi Coast transfer offers
August is the airport's busiest month, with more than twice January's passengers, and the plate rule applies on every day of it. Send the request as soon as the flights are booked. For November 2026, confirm with your airline which airport the flight uses before you send it, because Naples Airport is closed that month.
Whether you are two people with a week in Positano or a family of five bound for Ravello, the request is the same. Give the flight number, the hotel's street address, the number of suitcases and any child seats, and say if you want the return leg quoted too. Verified local carriers answer with offers, and you pick the one that fits.
Start on the Naples Airport transfers page, or see how airport transfers work on TransferBnB. If you are staying on the peninsula first, the Naples Airport to Sorrento and Sorrento to Naples Airport pages cover that leg.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a taxi from Naples to Positano, Amalfi or Ravello?
The Comune di Napoli sets fixed taxi fares of €145 to Positano, €155 to Amalfi and €160 to Ravello, one way and per car. They include night, holiday, luggage and airport supplements and exclude motorway tolls and a €5 supplement for more than 4 passengers. Ask for the fixed fare before the ride starts. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle before you fly and sized to your party.
How long does it take to get from Naples Airport to the Amalfi Coast?
With no traffic, the routed drive from Naples Airport is 71 minutes to Positano, 66 minutes to Amalfi and 71 minutes to Ravello, over about 63 km, 65 km and 61 km. Operators who drive the routes publish up to 90, 100 and 105 minutes, and summer traffic on the coast road is the reason to plan on the longer figure.
Is there a direct bus from Naples Airport to the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, to Amalfi town: a direct coach runs five times a day and takes 1 hour 50 minutes, and in October 2026 it was on sale up to 31 October only. It does not stop at Positano, where the public route is the €13 airport bus to Sorrento and then a SITA bus. A private transfer goes from arrivals to either town in one vehicle, at any hour.
Is there a train to the Amalfi Coast?
No. No railway reaches Positano, Amalfi or Ravello. The Circumvesuviana from Napoli Centrale ends at Sorrento after 64 to 75 minutes, and Trenitalia trains from Naples reach Salerno in approximately 25 to 40 minutes. From either station you continue by bus, ferry or car, where a transfer from Naples Airport covers the whole journey in one vehicle.
Does the ferry from Naples to Positano and Amalfi run all year?
No: in 2026 the ferry from Naples Molo Beverello to Positano and Amalfi runs from 1 April to 3 November. The standard adult fare is €32 to Positano and €32.50 to Amalfi. Outside those dates, and whenever the sea is rough, the road is the way in, and a private transfer runs every day of the year.
Do the alternating plate rules apply to taxis and private drivers?
No. Taxis and NCC cars, the licence a private transfer operates under, are exempt from the alternating plate rule on the SS163. The rule bars private and hire cars by odd or even plate between 10:00 and 18:00 on set dates. In 2026 those were 30 March to 6 April, 25 April to 2 May, weekends and holidays from 30 May to 31 July, every day in August and September, and weekends and holidays in October.
Is Naples Airport open in November 2026?
No. The airport operator has announced that Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for scheduled runway renovation work, without publishing the first or last day. Check with your airline which airport your flight will use. A transfer is requested from whichever airport that is, so post the trip once the airline has confirmed it.
Is it better to reach the Amalfi Coast through Naples or Salerno?
Salerno is the eastern gateway: its ferry takes 35 minutes to Amalfi for €12, from a pier 700 metres from the station. Naples has the airport and is the shorter way to Positano. From Naples Airport, going by Salerno adds a bus or train leg before the boat, where a private transfer is one vehicle from arrivals to the hotel.
