Naples Airport will close for runway work in November 2026

The airport's operator says Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work. The dates are not yet published: its notice gives the month and no first or last day. If you travel that month, confirm with your airline which airport the flight uses before you book a transfer. In any month, suitcases do not go through the gates at Pompeii: nothing larger than 30x30x15 cm is allowed inside, and paid left luggage is at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro only.

Operator's notice dated 21 September 2026; check aeroportodinapoli.it for the dates. Luggage rule: Parco Archeologico di Pompei, read October 2026.

About This Transfer

Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Naples, the cases go in the boot once, and the car leaves the airport straight onto the motorway link. Naples Airport to Pompeii is about 28 km and about 27 minutes on a clear road: the A1 link out of the airport, then the A3 south to the exit signed Pompei scavi. From the end of the motorway to the Piazza Esedra gate is under 1 km, along Via Plinio.

Pompeii is not one address. The park has three entrances, each on a different street: Porta Marina on Via Villa dei Misteri, Piazza Esedra on Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore, and Piazza Anfiteatro on Piazza Immacolata, on the side of the modern town. Tell your carrier which one you want, or give the street address of your hotel in Pompei, and the car goes there.

The gate decides how the visit starts. Paid left luggage is at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro. The park recommends Piazza Esedra for the Antiquarium, and it starts its step-free route at Piazza Anfiteatro. A ticket is valid for one entry with no re-entry, so agree with the driver before you go in where the car will be when you come out.

The public route works for one person with one bag: the Alibus to Piazza Garibaldi and the Circumvesuviana from there. A private car suits a family, a group with cases, or anyone going on to the coast the same day. For the other towns served from Capodichino and how the airport works, see our Naples Airport transfers page. If Pompeii is a stop on the way to the peninsula, the Naples Airport to Sorrento page covers the rest of that drive.

Sights Along the Route

Your driver covers the distance while you enjoy the scenery.

💡 Stop requests: Most carriers on this route are happy to make short stops at viewpoints or towns. Mention it when booking or ask your driver directly.
🏛️Recommended gate: Piazza Esedra

The Antiquarium

The park's own museum is included in the entrance ticket, and the park recommends the Piazza Esedra entrance to reach it. That gate is under 1 km from the motorway exit. The catch is luggage: the park lists paid left luggage at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro, and not here.

Villa of the Mysteries

The villa cannot be entered from the road, so no car can drop you at its door. It is reached through the site on the suburban villas route, which is included in the €25 ticket or added to the €20 ticket for €8, by card only, at the Herculaneum Gate. The supplement is sold at the start of the route, so carry a card.

Oplontis

The Villa of Poppaea at Oplontis belongs to the same park and has its own motorway exit, Torre Annunziata scavi, before the car reaches Pompeii. It is closed on Tuesdays. If you want both in one day, ask for the stop when you post the trip so the waiting time is in the offer.

Route Overview

Pickup: Naples Airport (NAP)

Naples has one terminal, so there is only one arrivals hall to find your driver in. A private car is not a taxi and does not use the taxi rank in front of arrivals. The airport gives any other car 15 minutes on its roads before a camera-issued fine of €80 to €318, and its P1 car park has the first 45 minutes free, which is where a driver waiting for a delayed flight can park. The airport reserves separate areas for licensed private-hire cars but does not publish where they are. Confirm the exact meeting point with your carrier in the booking chat before you fly.

Popular Pickup Points:

• The single arrivals hall
• P1 car park for a waiting driver
• Licensed private-hire pick-up areas
• Terminal open 03:30 to 22:30

Drop-off: Pompeii: the three gates, or the town

The car takes you to the street of the gate you name, or to your hotel in the modern town. The park has no car park of its own and no vehicle goes inside; outside there are paid municipal spaces marked with blue lines and private car parks. Neither the park nor the Comune publishes a set-down bay for the gates, so the exact stopping point is agreed with your carrier, who drives the street. Ticket offices are inside the archaeological area at all three entrances.

Popular Drop-off Points:

• Porta Marina, Via Villa dei Misteri
• Piazza Esedra, Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore
• Piazza Anfiteatro, Piazza Immacolata
• Hotels in the modern town of Pompei

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

🕐

Best Travel Times

Aim to be at the gate for the 09:00 opening. The park admits 20,000 people a day and gives 15,000 of those places to the first entry slot, which ends at 1 pm, so the afternoon slot is the small one, with 5,000. A ticket carries your name, the day and the slot, and neither the name nor the date can be changed. From 15 October to 15 March the last entry is 15:30 and the site closes at 17:00, which makes a visit straight off an afternoon flight tight.

🚦

Traffic Patterns

About 17 km of the drive is the A3, which has three lanes each way on this stretch and carries about 180,000 vehicles a day over its whole length. The 27 minutes is the clear-road time. No authority publishes a traffic-time figure for this motorway, so for a timed entry slot ask your carrier what margin they build in at your hour.

🛣️

Road & Border Notes

No border, and no Amalfi Coast plate rule: that rule covers only the SS163 coast road, and this drive never reaches it. The A3 is a toll motorway, €2.30 for a car in 2026. The Naples fixed taxi fare excludes tolls; a carrier's offer should say whether they are included.

💡

Carrier Tip

Name the gate when you post the trip, not just Pompeii. Say whether the car should wait with the luggage, and for how long: the park's own minimum for a visit is 2 to 3 hours. If you are going on to Sorrento or the coast afterwards, get both legs quoted in one request so one vehicle does the day.

Most Carriers Include

  • Meet and greet in the Naples arrivals hall, with the meeting point confirmed in the booking chat
  • Flight monitoring, so a late landing moves the pickup rather than losing the car
  • Luggage loaded once at the airport
  • Drop-off at the gate you name, or at your address in the town of Pompei
  • Motorway tolls stated in the offer, so they are not a surprise
  • Waiting time during your visit, if you ask for it when you post the trip
  • Child seats on request, with each child's age in the booking notes
  • The onward leg to Sorrento or the coast, or the return to the airport, quoted at the same time if you ask for it up front

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Low Demand

January was the quietest month at Naples Airport in 2025. The site is on its short day: open 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 15:30. It is closed on 25 December and 1 January, and the airport coach does not run on those two days either.

☀️

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Peak Demand

August was the busiest month at Naples Airport in 2025, with more than twice January's passengers. The 20,000 daily places at the site are named and sold by slot, so buy the ticket before you book the flight transfer around it. Take the morning slot and an early car.

  • Busiest months at the airport
  • 20,000 named tickets a day, 15,000 of them in the morning slot
  • Site open until 19:00
🍂

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

High Demand

Autumn 2026 has one notice that overrides the rest: Naples Airport will be closed for runway work in November, on dates not yet published. Before that, September was the third busiest month at the airport in 2025, and two dates matter in October: the Campania Express tourist train is suspended from 1 October 2026, and the site moves to its short day on 15 October, last entry 15:30. After that a visit straight off an afternoon flight is tight.

Important Information

Which Gate to Ask For
Pompeii has three entrances, and the right one depends on what you are carrying and what you need. With bags to store, ask for Porta Marina or Piazza Anfiteatro, the two with paid left luggage. For the step-free route the park calls Pompeii for all, ask for Piazza Anfiteatro. For the Antiquarium, the park recommends Piazza Esedra, under 1 km from the motorway exit. Guides that name one gate as the best for everyone are answering a different question.
Luggage at Pompeii
Bags, backpacks and cases larger than 30x30x15 cm are not allowed inside. The park's left luggage, at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro, is paid; figures that circulate describing it as free are wrong, and the park does not publish the price. A private car can keep your cases while you visit, if waiting time is in the offer.
Tickets, Slots and Opening Hours
The ancient city alone costs €20, and €25 with the suburban villas and Boscoreale. Tickets are personal: they state your name, the day and an entry slot, and staff may ask for identification. The park admits 20,000 people a day, 15,000 in the first slot and 5,000 in the second. From 16 March to 14 October the site opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 17:30; from 15 October to 15 March, 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 15:30. It is closed on 25 December and 1 January.
Meeting Your Driver at Naples Airport
Naples has one terminal and one arrivals hall. Your driver meets you there, not at the taxi rank in front of arrivals. The airport gives a car 15 minutes on its roads before a camera-issued fine of €80 to €318, and the P1 car park has the first 45 minutes free, so a driver waiting for a delayed flight parks there. The airport does not publish where licensed private-hire cars wait, so confirm the meeting point in the booking chat before you fly.
The Naples Fixed Taxi Fare to Pompeii
The Comune di Napoli sets a fixed taxi fare of €70 per car to the Pompeii excavations, one way. Motorway tolls are extra, although some figures that circulate say they are included, and so is a €5 minivan supplement for more than 4 passengers or a 7 to 9 seat car. A taxi is a one-way ride: it does not wait, and your cases get out with you.
The November 2026 Runway Closure
The operator's notice of 21 September 2026 says Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work, and it names no first or last day. If your trip falls in that month, ask your airline which airport the flight uses, and book the transfer from that airport.
Child Seats
Carriers provide child seats on request, but you need to book them. Put each child's age in the booking notes, because a booster and a rear-facing infant seat are different equipment. Confirm the seat is in the offer before you pay.
If Your Flight Is Delayed
Your carrier monitors the flight and moves the pickup to match. What does not move is your ticket: it is sold for a day and a slot, and the date cannot be changed. If the visit is on your arrival day, book the afternoon slot only when the landing leaves a real margin, or visit the next morning and let the car take you to your hotel in Pompei first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take from Naples Airport to Pompeii by car?
About 27 minutes on a clear road for about 28 km, measured from the arrivals kerb at Naples Airport to the Piazza Esedra gate of the excavations. The drive is the A1 link and then the A3 motorway to the exit signed Pompei scavi. The other two gates and the main square of the modern town are within 2 km of that distance. No authority publishes a traffic time for the A3, so leave a margin if you hold a timed ticket.
How much is a taxi from Naples Airport to Pompeii?
The Comune di Napoli sets a fixed taxi fare of €70 per car to the Pompeii excavations, one way, valid day and night. It includes the airport, night, holiday and luggage supplements. Motorway tolls are not included, and neither is a €5 minivan supplement for more than 4 passengers. Ask for the fixed fare at the start of the ride; the driver cannot refuse it, and the meter then shows F0.00. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle before you fly, sized to your group and luggage.
Which entrance to Pompeii should my driver drop me at?
It depends on what you are carrying. Pompeii has three entrances: Porta Marina on Via Villa dei Misteri, Piazza Esedra on Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore, and Piazza Anfiteatro on Piazza Immacolata. Paid left luggage is at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro only. The park starts its step-free route at Piazza Anfiteatro and recommends Piazza Esedra for the Antiquarium. Ticket offices are at all three. With a private car that waits with your cases, any of the three works.
Can I take a suitcase into Pompeii?
No. The Archaeological Park of Pompeii does not allow bags, backpacks or cases larger than 30x30x15 cm inside. Left luggage is available for a fee at the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances; the park does not publish the price and lists none at Piazza Esedra. Travellers arriving from the airport either use one of those two gates or book a private car that keeps the luggage while they visit.
Is there a direct bus or train from Naples Airport to Pompeii?
There is no train from the airport. One coach, the airport service to Sorrento, calls at Pompeii 25 minutes after leaving the airport on each of its eight daily runs, but the Pompeii stop has to be reserved and the operator publishes no fare or address for it. The rail route is the Alibus to Piazza Garibaldi, 15 minutes for €5, then the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, 29 to 35 minutes, with one piece of luggage up to 20 kg carried free. A private transfer goes from the arrivals hall to the gate you choose with no change.
Can I visit Pompeii on the way from Naples Airport to Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast?
Yes. Pompeii is beside the A3, the motorway every one of those drives starts on, about 27 minutes from the airport on a clear road. The park's own minimum for a visit is 2 to 3 hours, and suitcases are not allowed inside, so the practical way is one car that waits with the luggage and then drives on. Ask for the stop and the waiting time when you post the trip, so both are in the offer.
What time does Pompeii open, and when is the last entry?
From 16 March to 14 October the Pompeii excavations open at 09:00 and close at 19:00, with last entry at 17:30. From 15 October to 15 March they open at 09:00 and close at 17:00, with last entry at 15:30. The site is closed on 25 December and 1 January. Entry is sold in two slots, and the first, which ends at 1 pm, holds 15,000 of the 20,000 daily places.
How much is a Pompeii ticket in 2026?
€20 for the ancient city alone and €25 for the ancient city with the suburban villas, including the Villa of the Mysteries, and Boscoreale. Holders of the €20 ticket can add the villas on site for €8, by card only. Tickets are personal and valid for one entry, with no re-entry. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month. The park limits entries to 20,000 a day.
Where do I meet my driver at Naples Airport?
In the arrivals hall. Naples has one terminal, so there is only one. The taxi rank in front of arrivals is for taxis, and the airport reserves separate pick-up areas for licensed private-hire cars without publishing where they are, so confirm the exact meeting point with your carrier in the booking chat. Any other car may stay on the airport roads for only 15 minutes, which is why a driver waiting for a delayed flight parks in the P1 car park, free for the first 45 minutes.
Is Naples Airport closed in November 2026?
In November 2026, yes, on dates not yet published. The airport's operator announced on 21 September 2026 that Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work, and its notice does not give a first or last day. If you travel that month, confirm with your airline which airport your flight uses before you book ground transport.
How much does a private transfer from Naples Airport to Pompeii cost?
TransferBnB does not publish a fixed price for this route. You post the trip with your flight, passenger count, luggage and the gate you want, and verified carriers send offers per vehicle that you compare before you pay. For context, the Comune di Napoli's fixed taxi fare to the Pompeii excavations is €70 per car, tolls extra. The offer should state whether tolls and waiting time are included.

Why Book This Route?

  • •You name the gate, Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra or Piazza Anfiteatro, and the car goes to that street rather than to wherever a coach or train happens to stop
  • •Your cases never meet the 30x30x15 cm rule: they stay in the car if waiting time is in the offer
  • •Your driver meets you in the one arrivals hall at Naples, with the meeting point confirmed in the booking chat, since the airport does not publish where private-hire cars wait
  • •One vehicle can do the whole day: airport, Pompeii, then Sorrento or the coast, quoted in a single request
  • •Verified carriers compete for the job, and you see the vehicle and the confirmed total, tolls included or not, before you pay

What our customers say

Thomas B. — London, UK

Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.

Marta R. — Munich, Germany

Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.

Olivier D. — Lyon, France

Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.

Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland

Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.

Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.

Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria

I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
