Naples Airport will close for runway work in November 2026

The airport's operator says Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work. The dates are not yet published: its notice gives the month and no first or last day. If you fly home that month, confirm with your airline which airport the flight leaves from before you book a transfer. In any month, a last-day visit to Pompeii starts with the luggage: nothing larger than 30x30x15 cm is allowed inside, and paid left luggage is at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro only.

Operator's notice dated 21 September 2026; check aeroportodinapoli.it for the dates. Luggage rule: Parco Archeologico di Pompei, read October 2026.

About This Transfer

The car is waiting on the street of the gate you walk out of, or outside your hotel in Pompei, with the cases already in the boot if it has held them during your visit. Pompeii to Naples Airport is about 28 km and about 27 minutes on a clear road: Via Plinio to the motorway, the A3 north to Naples, then the A1 link, the SS162dir and the Capodichino exit of the Tangenziale. The driver stops in the private-hire bays on the departures road, at the only terminal the airport has.

Pompeii has three gates. The park publishes no list of exits; on its step-free route it names Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra as the ways out. Porta Marina is on Via Villa dei Misteri, Piazza Esedra on Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore, and Piazza Anfiteatro on Piazza Immacolata, on the side of the modern town. A ticket is valid for one entry with no re-entry, so once you are out you are out. Agree the pickup gate and the time with the driver before you go in, and ask at the turnstile if you plan to finish somewhere else.

Work back from the flight, not forward from the visit. Naples opens check-in 2 hours before domestic and international departures and 3 hours before intercontinental ones, and the park's own minimum for a visit is 2 to 3 hours. Leaving about two and a half hours before a short-haul departure gets you to the terminal as the desks open, on a clear road. Your airline's check-in closing time is the deadline, so set the pickup from that.

For the drive in the other direction, the three gates and what each is for, see our Naples Airport to Pompeii page. The Naples Airport transfers page covers the terminal, the departures road and the rest of the coast.

✓ About 27 minutes on a clear road, around 28 km

A last-day visit to the excavations

With an afternoon or evening flight the site fits into the last day. The park asks for a minimum of 2 to 3 hours, and a 3-hour visit from the 09:00 opening ends at noon. From 15 October to 15 March the last entry is 15:30 and the site closes at 17:00; from 16 March to 14 October, 17:30 and 19:00.

Oplontis

The Villa of Poppaea at Oplontis belongs to the same park and sits between Pompeii and the airport; heading for Naples the park gives the exit as Torre Annunziata Sud/Boscoreale. It is closed on Tuesdays. Ask for the stop when you post the trip so the waiting time is in the offer.

Route Overview

Pickup: Pompeii: the gate you leave by, or the town

The car collects you on the street of the gate you name, or at your hotel in the modern town. The park has no car park of its own; outside there are paid municipal spaces marked with blue lines and private car parks. Neither the park nor the Comune publishes a pick-up bay for the gates, so the exact meeting point is agreed with your carrier in the booking chat. From Porta Marina the routed drive is a little longer, about 29 km and 30 minutes, because Via Villa dei Misteri leads away from the motorway first.

Popular Pickup Points:

• Porta Marina, Via Villa dei Misteri
• Piazza Esedra, Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore
• Piazza Anfiteatro, Piazza Immacolata
• Hotels in the modern town of Pompei

Drop-off: Naples Airport (NAP) departures

Naples has one terminal with three entrances; Entrance 3, near arrivals, is the one the airport recommends for Air France, KLM and Ryanair. Licensed private-hire cars drop off only in the dedicated temporary bays on the departures road, for the time it takes to unload you and your luggage, and every car has 15 minutes in the airport road zone. The terminal opens at 03:30 and closes at 22:30. Passengers aged 14 and over with an electronic passport can use the eGates at passport control.

Popular Drop-off Points:

• Departures road, private-hire drop-off bays
• Entrance 3, near arrivals
• Check-in on the ground floor
• Terminal open 03:30 to 22:30

Local Route Knowledge

Practical intelligence from carriers who drive this route regularly.

🕐

Best Travel Times

The morning entry slot and an afternoon flight are the combination that works. The site opens at 09:00, the first slot holds 15,000 of the 20,000 daily places, and a visit of the park's minimum length is over by noon. An early flight is the other case for a car: the terminal opens at 03:30, long before a visit is possible, and the pickup is simply your hotel door.

🚦

Traffic Patterns

About 18 km of the return is the A3, three lanes each way on this stretch, on a motorway that carries about 180,000 vehicles a day over its whole length. The 27 minutes is the clear-road time, and no authority publishes a traffic-time figure for it. Give your carrier the flight time and let them set the pickup, especially in summer: August 2025 brought the airport more than twice January's passengers.

🛣️

Road & Border Notes

No border, and no Amalfi Coast plate rule: that rule covers only the SS163 coast road. The A3 is a toll motorway, €2.30 for a car in 2026, and the routed return ends on a short stretch of the Naples Tangenziale, which has its own tariff. The offer should say whether tolls are included.

💡

Carrier Tip

Tell the carrier three things: the flight time, the gate you will leave by, and whether the car holds the luggage during the visit. Keep your phone on inside the site and confirm the pickup when you are walking out.

When to Travel This Route

Demand, pricing, and what to expect across the year.

❄️

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Low Demand

January was the quietest month at Naples Airport in 2025. The site is on its short day, 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 15:30, and it is closed on 25 December and 1 January. The coach from Sorrento does not run on those two days, so a flight on either one needs a car.

  • Site open 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 15:30
  • Closed 25 December and 1 January
  • No coach on 25 December and 1 January
🌸

Spring (Mar-May)

High Demand

The long day starts on 16 March: open 09:00 to 19:00, last entry 17:30, which gives a last-day visit more room before an evening flight. Traffic at the airport climbs from April. Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month.

  • Summer hours from 16 March
  • Airport traffic rises from April
  • Free admission on the first Sunday of the month
☀️

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Peak Demand

August was the busiest month at Naples Airport in 2025, with more than twice January's passengers. Tickets for the site are named and sold by slot, 20,000 a day, so buy the morning slot first and then set the pickup around it. Leave more margin for the motorway than the clear-road time suggests.

  • Busiest months at the airport
  • 20,000 named tickets a day, 15,000 of them in the morning slot
  • Site open until 19:00
🍂

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

High Demand

Autumn 2026 has one notice that overrides the rest: Naples Airport will be closed for runway work in November, on dates not yet published. If you fly home that month, confirm the departure airport with your airline first. Before that, September was the third busiest month at the airport in 2025. The Campania Express tourist train is suspended from 1 October 2026, and the site moves to its short day on 15 October, closing at 17:00. From then a visit before an evening flight has to be over by 17:00.

Important Information

Timing the Pickup to Your Flight
Naples Airport opens check-in 2 hours before domestic and international flights and 3 hours before intercontinental ones. The drive from Pompeii is about 27 minutes on a clear road, so leaving about two and a half hours before a short-haul departure gets you there as the desks open. That is when check-in starts, not when it closes: your airline's closing time is the deadline. Give your carrier the flight time and that deadline, and let them set the pickup.
Which Gate to Be Collected From
Agree the gate before you go in. Pompeii has three entrances, Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro. The park publishes no list of exits; on its step-free route it names Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra as the ways out. If your cases are in the park's paid left luggage, you have to come back to the gate where you left them, Porta Marina or Piazza Anfiteatro. If the car has them, you are not tied to that gate. From Porta Marina the routed drive to the airport is about 29 km and 30 minutes, a little longer than from the other two.
Luggage on the Day You Fly
Bags, backpacks and cases larger than 30x30x15 cm are not allowed inside the site. The park's left luggage at Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro is paid, and none is listed at Piazza Esedra. A private car can hold the luggage while you visit, if waiting time is in the offer, and then leave for the airport from the gate you come out of.
Dropping Off at Naples Airport
Naples has one terminal with three entrances. Licensed private-hire cars stop only in the temporary bays on the departures road, for as long as it takes to unload, and every car has 15 minutes in the airport road zone. Entrance 3, near arrivals, is the one the airport recommends for Air France, KLM and Ryanair. The terminal is open from 03:30 to 22:30.
The November 2026 Runway Closure
The operator's notice of 21 September 2026 says Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work, and it names no first or last day. If your flight home is in that month, ask your airline which airport it leaves from, and book the transfer to that airport.
Child Seats
Carriers provide child seats on request, but you need to book them. Put each child's age in the booking notes, because a booster and a rear-facing infant seat are different equipment. Confirm the seat is in the offer before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take from Pompeii to Naples Airport by car?
About 27 minutes on a clear road for about 28 km, measured from the Piazza Esedra gate of the excavations to the terminal kerb at Naples Airport. From the Porta Marina gate the routed drive is about 29 km and 30 minutes. The road is the A3 motorway north to Naples, then the A1 link, the SS162dir and the Capodichino exit of the Tangenziale. No authority publishes a traffic time for the A3, so add a margin before a flight.
How early should I leave Pompeii for a flight from Naples?
Work back from check-in. Naples Airport opens check-in 2 hours before domestic and international flights and 3 hours before intercontinental ones, and the drive from Pompeii is about 27 minutes on a clear road. Leaving about two and a half hours before a short-haul departure gets you to the terminal as the desks open. Your airline's check-in closing time is the real deadline, and no authority publishes a traffic time for the A3, so a carrier who knows your flight sets the pickup with a margin.
Can I visit Pompeii on the day I fly out of Naples?
Yes, with an afternoon or evening flight. The site opens at 09:00, the park's own minimum for a visit is 2 to 3 hours, and the airport is about 27 minutes away on a clear road. The obstacle is luggage: cases larger than 30x30x15 cm are not allowed inside, and left luggage, at the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances, is paid. A private car that holds your cases and meets you at the gate you agreed removes that step.
Is there a bus or train from Pompeii to Naples Airport?
There is no train to the airport. The Circumvesuviana runs 29 times a day from Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri to Naples Piazza Garibaldi in 30 to 38 minutes, and the Alibus links the station and the airport for €5, at most 15 minutes apart, a run its operator times at 15 minutes from the airport end. One coach, the Sorrento to airport service, calls at Pompeii on its eight daily runs, 25 to 30 minutes before it reaches the airport, but the stop must be reserved and its operator advises taking it at least 5 hours before a flight. A private transfer leaves from your gate or hotel at the time your flight needs.
How much is a taxi from Pompeii to Naples Airport?
We found no published fixed fare for a taxi starting in Pompeii. The €70 figure often quoted is the Comune di Napoli's fixed fare for a Naples taxi going to the Pompeii excavations, one way, with motorway tolls extra. A private transfer is quoted per vehicle in advance, so you know the total before the day.
Which gate at Pompeii should my driver collect me from?
The one you agree before you go in. Pompeii has three entrances, Porta Marina on Via Villa dei Misteri, Piazza Esedra on Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore and Piazza Anfiteatro on Piazza Immacolata, and a ticket allows one entry with no re-entry. The park publishes no list of exits; on its step-free route it names Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra. If your bags are in the park's left luggage, that means the gate where you left them, Porta Marina or Piazza Anfiteatro. If the car holds the bags, choose the gate that suits your route through the site and tell the driver before you go in.
Where does a private car drop off at Naples Airport?
On the departures road, in the temporary bays the airport reserves for licensed private-hire cars, for as long as it takes to unload passengers and luggage. Naples has one terminal with three entrances, and Entrance 3, near arrivals, is recommended for Air France, KLM and Ryanair. Every car has 15 minutes in the airport road zone. The terminal is open from 03:30 to 22:30.
What time does Pompeii close?
From 16 March to 14 October the Pompeii excavations close at 19:00, with last entry at 17:30. From 15 October to 15 March they close at 17:00, with last entry at 15:30. They open at 09:00 all year and are closed on 25 December and 1 January. For a visit before a flight, the opening hour matters more than the closing one.
Is Naples Airport closed in November 2026?
In November 2026, yes, on dates not yet published. The airport's operator announced on 21 September 2026 that Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for runway renovation work, and its notice does not give a first or last day. If you fly that month, confirm the departure airport with your airline before you book ground transport.
How much does a private transfer from Pompeii to Naples Airport cost?
TransferBnB does not publish a fixed price for this route. You post the trip with your flight time, passenger count, luggage and pickup gate, and verified carriers send offers per vehicle that you compare before you pay. The offer should state whether tolls and any waiting time during your visit are included.

Why Book This Route?

  • •The pickup is set from your flight time, not from a coach whose operator asks for 5 hours before departure
  • •The car holds your cases, so you are not tied to the gate where a left-luggage desk has them
  • •Your cases stay in the car during the visit if waiting time is in the offer, instead of in paid left luggage at a gate you then have to return to
  • •The price is agreed before the day; we found no published fixed taxi fare for a ride starting in Pompeii
  • •Verified carriers compete for the job, and you see the vehicle and the confirmed total, tolls included or not, before you pay

What our customers say

Thomas B. — London, UK

Driver was already outside arrivals when we landed in Geneva - he'd tracked the flight and knew we'd come through early. Three sets of skis loaded and we were on the road to Chamonix before most passengers had cleared customs.

Marta R. — Munich, Germany

Good experience. Chose from three offers for Munich Airport to Kitzbühel, picked the one with the best rating. Straightforward.

Olivier D. — Lyon, France

Four of us split the cost from Zurich Airport to St. Anton and came out cheaper than the shared shuttle per person - plus we went straight to the chalet door instead of stopping at every hotel in the valley. Hadn't expected it to work out that way but it did.

Sarah K. — Dublin, Ireland

Travelled with two small kids and a lot of luggage from Rome Fiumicino. I mentioned the stroller in the booking notes and the driver showed up with a large estate. No fuss.

Pieter V. — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Eight people, Geneva to Verbier, all ski gear. One minibus, one price, door to chalet. We paid less per person than the shuttle and didn't have to share with anyone else.

Anna-Lisa M. — Vienna, Austria

I book private transfers for work fairly regularly across different platforms. What TransferBnB does differently is that you get the driver's name, direct number, vehicle, and plate before you travel - not just a confirmation number. For business trips where timing matters, that's the part that actually counts.
